Why the new Tower 尊敬の印 will 始める，決める your heart 燃えて: Four years after that profoundly emotional sea of poppies, a fiery new spectacle will 示す a century since the end of the 広大な／多数の／重要な War

The grass is immaculate, mown in straight lines to a Wimbledon-基準 finish.

It’s 半端物 to think of this 広大な tract of lawn ― nearly half a mile long and 50 yards wide ― as a sea of red.?

Yet that was the scene which drew the Queen, the 王室の Family, 政治家，政治屋s, celebrities and five million members of the public to this 位置／汚点／見つけ出す four years ago.

The poppies at the Tower of London 証明するd to be one of the most powerful and popular pieces of 同時代の art this country has ever seen when they filled the 広大な／多数の／重要な moat in 2014 to 示す the centenary of the 突発／発生 of the 広大な／多数の／重要な War.

So what on earth is the Tower going to do by way of an encore as we approach November 11 and the centenary of the Armistice of 1918?

The poppies at the Tower of London 証明するd to be one of the most powerful and popular pieces of 同時代の art this country has ever seen when they filled the 広大な／多数の／重要な moat in 2014 to 示す the centenary of the 突発／発生 of the 広大な／多数の／重要な War

There is about to be another show in the moat. However, things are going to be very different this time.?

And let us hope that, on this occasion, the 政府, the arts 設立, the Left and the critics 決起大会／結集させる 一連の会議、交渉／完成する this admirable 尊敬の印 to the fallen, unlike 2014.?

支援する then, they either ignored or mocked the poppies, only embracing them when they belatedly woke up to the depth of public feeling.

I have no 疑問 the public will be 支援する in 広大な／多数の／重要な numbers, as contemplative and respectful as before.?

But next month it will not be poppies at the centre of this 広大な commemorative 演習 but 炎上s.

And, from next Tuesday, Daily Mail readers will have the chance to play a very special part in the 訴訟／進行s.

It was 支援する in the summer of 2014 that artist Paul Cummins started 工場／植物ing 888,246 ceramic poppies in the moat around our most famous 要塞 ― one for every 兵士 who died for King and country in World War I. He called the 取り付け・設備 血 Swept Lands And Seas Of Red.

By the time the last poppy went into the ground on Remembrance Sunday, more than 20,000 volunteers had helped the 事業／計画（する）’s designer, Tom Piper, to 任命する／導入する a 陳列する，発揮する which, for days on end, brought the streets around the Tower to a silent, tearful 行き詰まり

As more poppies appeared, so the （人が）群がるs grew, too, along with the number of volunteers wanting to help. This 素晴らしい depiction of a lost 世代 struck an instant chord with much of the country.

By the time the last poppy went into the ground on Remembrance Sunday, more than 20,000 volunteers had helped the 事業／計画（する）’s designer, Tom Piper, to 任命する／導入する a 陳列する，発揮する which, for days on end, brought the streets around the Tower to a silent, tearful 行き詰まり.

There was also a short twilight 儀式 each night as the Last 地位，任命する was played and a guest （衆議院の）議長 stood まっただ中に the poppies reciting 指名するs from the Roll of Honour. The 指名するs ― 180 each night ― were 指名するd in 前進する by the public.

On one evening, an entire village from Derbyshire turned up to hear a 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる） of 地元の lads read out.?

People flew from Australia and Canada just to be 現在の when a kinsman was 存在 honoured. Everyone 手配中の，お尋ね者 to be 伴う／関わるd.

One night, the organisers 招待するd Helen Mirren to do the honours. Oscar-winning actress she might be but even her 発言する／表明する 割れ目d at times.

The only sour 公式文書，認める was that those 団体／死体s 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金d with supporting the arts ― 含むing the 国家の 宝くじ ― failed to see any 長所 in the idea.?

The artist had to take out a high-利益／興味 貸付金 to 同意して署名する his brilliant idea, while the Tower’s 控訴，上告s for help from all our main arts organisations were 拒絶するd.

There will be no need for that this time, for generous 支援者s have come 今後 to support what should be a very fitting 結論 to four years of 国家の 記念s.

During that time, we have seen poignant parades and services 権利 across the World War I battlefront led by the 王室の Family, 大臣s and 王室の British Legion 基準-持参人払いのs.

From Mons to the Somme and Vimy, from the North Sea 儀式s to 示す the 戦う／戦い of Ju tland, to a heartbreaking service in memory of the staff and pupils of an East End 最初の／主要な school killed in 1917 during London’s first daylight 爆破 （警察の）手入れ，急襲, Britain has faithfully honoured the memory of a noble 世代 who are no longer with us.

Now comes the final episode in this 広大な／多数の／重要な commemorative 請け負うing, with a 一連の events planned for next month. Historic 王室の Palaces, the charity which runs the Tower of London, has once again teamed up with poppies designer Tom Piper to create a fresh work called Beyond The 深くするing 影をつくる／尾行する: The Tower Remembers.

But 反して the poppies sought to 伝える monumental loss and sacrifice, this 陳列する，発揮する will be about remembrance ― but also 今後-looking, too.

At the 突発／発生 of war, the Foreign 長官 Sir Edward Grey grimly 宣言するd that ‘the lamps are going out all over Europe’. From November 4, on 連続する nights until November 11 itself, we will see them slowly come 支援する on.

Unlike the poppies, this is an idea which has 発展させるd from a long 一連の 集団の／共同の discussions between the Tower staff and their 助言者s.

Spread throughout the moat of the Tower, 概略で three feet apart and at さまざまな 高さs, will be 10,000 たいまつs. The 正確な number has no particular significance and will 簡単に be 決定するd by the surface area of the moat.

As with the poppies, no one knows for sure what it will look like until it 現実に happens.

The 力／強力にする of this piece will be in the creeping 塀で囲む of 炎上 as it 徐々に spreads out until the whole moat is 燃えて, while a choral 尊敬の印 plays throughout. It will begin each evening at 5pm as the Tower is cast in to 不明瞭 and a 孤独な bugler plays the Last 地位，任命する. Then comes what Tom Piper calls the ‘ignition’.

This, he explains, is as much a part of the specta cle as the end result. ‘It will have a strong 劇の element,’ says the award-winning theatre designer.

Led by the Yeomen Warders of the Tower in their 伝統的な Tudor ‘Beefeater’ uniforms, a team of 80 volunteers will move outwards from the 塀で囲むs 武装した with 病弱なd-like zappers and begin lighting the たいまつs one by one.

We are not talking tea lights. Each will produce a 深い orange 炎上 up to a foot tall from a canister the size of a small paint マリファナ.

‘One of the things people 設立する most 控訴，上告ing about the poppies was watching the volunteers 工場／植物ing them,’ Tom Piper tells me.

At the same time, the 特に （売買）手数料，委託（する）／委員会／権限d choral work will （犯罪の）一味 out from loudspeakers stretching the length of the moat. Each たいまつ will have enough (alcohol-based) 燃料 to last 正確に four hours in all 天候s, その結果 the 炎上s will 中止する at around 9pm and the Tower will flick the lights 支援する on.

As in 2014, large （人が）群がるs are 推定する／予想するd. This time, however, a few lucky members of the public can 現実に immerse themselves in the 陳列する，発揮する.

A 限られた／立憲的な number of tickets are on sale (for just £5 each), 許すing people to enter the moat and walk along a path through this sea of 解雇する／砲火／射撃 from one end to the other ― at a 安全な distance, of course.

‘The health and safety 手動式の for this event is this big!’ exclaims 指揮官 Debra Whittingham, the 副 知事 of the Tower, stretching her 武器 wide. A former 王室の 海軍 officer and the first 女性（の） 副 知事 in the Tower’s 1,000-year history, 指揮官 Whittingham is in 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 of all the practicalities.

Her 義務s 延長する to deciding on the 着せる／賦与するing the volunteer たいまつ-はしけs must wear each night. Thankfully, the 指揮官 has already 拒否権d one 必然的な 需要・要求する. Whatever the health and safety commissars may say, there will be no hi-viz jackets.

‘We want people dressed 適切な,’ she says, 追加するing that a 範囲 of dark, weatherproof, 炎上-retardant 道具 is 存在 sorted out.

She is 捜し出すing a pool of 300 volunteers to be part of the たいまつ-lighting programme, and a その上の 300 to help 補充する all the たいまつs the に引き続いて morning. After the poppy experience, there should be a 殺到.

As for the Yeomen Warders, they are very much looking 今後 to taking part.

‘It will be in our own time, so we have asked for volunteers and everyone wants to be part of it,’ says Yeoman Gaoler (second-in-命令（する）) （頭が）ひょいと動く Loughlin MBE, 63. He joined the Beefeaters at the Tower after 36 years in the RAF 連隊, and 井戸／弁護士席 remembers 存在 on 義務 here during the poppy saga.

Most of all, he 解任するs the evening when he was 選ぶd to read out the roll of honour. ‘It was just astonishing to hear people in the （人が）群がる crying as I was reading out the 指名するs,’ he 解任するs.

I 示唆する that some people will, 必然的に, be 関心d for the ravens. Might not the sudden 外見 of ten thousand 炎上s be enough to 運動 these famous 居住（者）s away ― and thus （一定の）期間 doom for the Tower, the 栄冠を与える and the nation, as legend foretells?

‘Don’t worry, the ravens will all be 安全に tucked up in bed by then,’ （頭が）ひょいと動く 保証するs me.

There is still much planning to do. Eva Koch-Schulte, creative 生産者 for all the Historic 王室の Palaces is presently working out the 形態／調整 and タイミングs of the たいまつ 行列.

‘It is all about light seeping out from the 影をつくる／尾行するs and that sense of 株d sacrifice,’ explains German-born Eva, who has （売買）手数料，委託（する）／委員会／権限d 作曲家 and artist Mira Calix to create the music.

Like the 肩書を与える of the 陳列する，発揮する, the words of the choral piece will be based on Sonnets To A 兵士 by Mary Borden, a war poet and nurse on the Western 前線 during World War I who went on to run an 救急車 service in World War II.

There are going to be major events all over Britain to 示す the centenary of the Armistice, 含むing a ‘people’s parade’ at the Cenotaph, and a service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey 伴う／関わるing the 王室の Family and (almost certainly) the 大統領 of Germany.

But the 炎ing moat at the Tower will surely be の中で the most memorable 尊敬の印s. And this 陳列する，発揮する will also be いっそう少なく financially 不安定な than the 2014 poppy show. It seems astonishing now, but Paul Cummins 危険d 破産 to create that dazzling 血 Swept Lands And Seas Of Red.

The 国家の 宝くじ, so ready to 投げ上げる／ボディチェックする money at any modish tat masquerading as culture, had 辞退するd to cough up a bean に向かって the Tower’s costs. Ditto the Arts 会議.

Perhaps, if Cummins had said he 手配中の，お尋ね者 to create a sea of white 旗s or a 巨大（な） Tracey Emin bed, it might have 設立する some cash. He might even have been 指名するd for the Turner Prize.

But no. His war-主題d work was not worthy of public 基金ing. For good 手段, a 後見人 columnist 重さを計るd in and attacked it as a ‘Ukip-style 記念の’.

So Cummins had to take out a hefty 貸付金 to get it all off the ground and 支払う／賃金 for a ceramic 生産／産物 line, using 失業した youngsters in Derby.

Historic 王室の Palaces (which runs the Tower without a penny of public money), agreed to foot the 法案 for （人が）群がる 支配（する）／統制する and 兵たん業務. Yet when the time （機の）カム to take the 陳列する，発揮する 負かす／撃墜する, there was an 激しい抗議. The public 手配中の，お尋ね者 ‘their’ poppies to stay. So, a 妥協 was 設立する.

To recoup his costs, Cummins sold the poppies for £25 each, with any 利益（をあげる） going to charity. Su ch was the 需要・要求する that they 生成するd a whopping £9.5 million for good 原因（となる）s.

A group of philanthropists also bought the two most 劇の 面s of his 陳列する，発揮する ― ‘Wave’ and ‘Weeping Window’, the two 広大な／多数の／重要な arches of poppies ― and gave them to the nation in perpetuity.

The then （ドイツなどの）首相／（大学の）学長 of the 国庫, George Osborne, produced a その上の £2 million to take these two 陳列する，発揮するs on 小旅行する around the 部隊d Kingdom.

They have enjoyed astonishing success, with a その上の 4.5 million people coming to see them.

Tom Piper has spent much of the past four years 小旅行するing the country re-築くing the poppies at 地域の 場所／位置s, and has been bowled over by the reaction to them.

He was 特に touched when he took them to Caernarfon 城 where his 広大な／多数の／重要な-uncle, 中尉／大尉／警部補 Arthur Griffiths, is の中で the thousands of gallant Welshmen 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）d in the Roll of Honour.

‘I felt this very powerful 関係,’ he says. ‘It left me very proud and very moved.’

He tells me how Newcastle’s Woodhorn 採掘 museum enjoyed a 1,500 per cent 増加する in 訪問者s when the poppies went on show there. And so it continues.

This 週末, Weeping Window has gone on 陳列する，発揮する at the 皇室の War Museum in London, while Wave is on show at the IWM North in Manchester.

Four years on, Poppy 力／強力にする is 衰えていない. The 裁判官s of 同時代の art’s ますます ludicrous and tawdry Turner Prize might continue to ignore Cummins.

Yet, it is a 手段 of the 耐えるing ― almost sacred ― status of his work that, to this day, you will not find a 選び出す／独身 one of those 888,246 初めの ceramic poppies on eBay.

Fortunately, 基金ing for the 炎上s is already in place. The City of London 会社／団体 and the Charles Wolfson 信用 will 支払う／賃金 for the たいまつs, and the Tower will sort out everything else.

Once the 炎上s have flickered and disappeared for the last time, all the たいまつs will be 再生利用するd and the moat will 逆戻りする to grass again.

‘We very much 手配中の，お尋ね者 something ephemeral, which is why we have gone for sound and light,’ says Eva Koch-Schulte.

まっただ中に all our squabbles over Brexit and our 21st-century の間の-generational 反目，不和s, this will be a moment to pause and 反映する on the sacrifice of a 世代 who never lived to enjoy our freedoms and 特権s.

It will be みごたえのある, appropriate and 深く，強烈に impressive.
