Hoggle the African pygmy hedgehog has a 有罪の secret. The white-spined pet can't stop gobbling mealworms, and he's piling on 負わせる. In fact, as hogs go, Hoggle's a porker.
But he's in 安全な 手渡すs, literally. Owner Zoe has brought him to the Montgomery practice in Ashford, Kent, where vets Jo and Clive specialise in unusual animals... as 明らかにする/漏らすd in a new animal 文書の series, Inside The Vets.
Jo Melluish, 32, began her career as an 抑留する at St Tiggywinkle's Hedgehog Hospital in Buckinghamshire, where she 選ぶd up a few tricks ? such as how to 説得する a hedgehog to unroll.?
One method is to cup the prickly ball in your 手渡すs and bounce it gently: 'They seem to like that,' she says. 'Another technique is to put them on the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する and gently 一打/打撃 them.'

Hoggle is 免疫の to Jo's blandishments, however. So she 注ぐs a little lukewarm water into a plastic tub, and 始める,決めるs him in it.?
That's more than the stubbornest hedgehog can ignore. Once he has unrolled, Jo c an 始める,決める about 検査/視察するing his teeth and 重さを計るing him, before he tucks his nose under his tail again.
'Hedgehogs can be やめる challenging,' Jo sighs. This one needs to go on a low-mealworm diet, to 回復する his 人物/姿/数字.
Challenging animals are the practice's 在庫/株-in-貿易(する). They have a 評判 as the best place to bring 貧しく fish and birds, which is why Bonnie the macaw is 配達するd to Jo by parrot 熱中している人 Mel.
Mel runs a bird 救助(する) helpline, with eight parrots and parakeets in the house and fifteen more in an aviary.?
Bonnie was brought to her six months ago, after her previous owner could not 対処する and left the poor bird 閉じ込める/刑務所d up in a tight cage for days at a time. In 失望/欲求不満, the macaw ripped out her own plumage.
But it is not her ragged feathers that are worrying Mel. Bonnie appears to be 緊張するing to lay an egg ? and nothing is coming out. A 罠にかける egg can be 致命的な, as Mel knows only too 井戸/弁護士席: last Christmas, she lost a beloved African Grey to a 類似の 条件.
Jo tries 説得するing and 調査(する)ing, but cannot dislodge the egg. Reluctantly, she decides to operate. Anaesthetising birds is difficult, because we know so little about how their systems 答える/応じる to 麻薬s, but a macaw is a big bird which makes it easier to 扱う in 外科.
With an oxygen mask clamped over her beak, Bonnie drifts into unconsciousness. Clive, the 上級の vet, 追加するs his 専門的知識 to the op, and thankfully the egg is 除去するd.

Jo (pictured) (人命などを)奪う,主張するs birds are one of the most challenging 患者s as they are 技術d in hiding symptoms as a 生き残り trait
?But Bonnie's problems aren't over ? five days later she is 支援する in the 外科 to have a second whopping egg 除去するd. She may be a parrot, but she seems to be laying ostrich eggs.
'Birds are の中で the most challenging 患者s,' says Jo. 'When they get sick in the wild, they are very good at hiding symptoms, because if they 明らかにする/漏らす that they are 攻撃を受けやすい, they are more likely to be taken by a predator.?
'That 生き残り trait has been passed on to birds in 捕らわれた: they try very hard not to show you they are ill, and so by the time we see them they are often very sick.'
And it is not only pet birds that the clinic 扱う/治療するs. Clive has a 支配する that he will 試みる/企てる to save any 負傷させるd wild animal brought in by members of the public, 供給するing it has a good chance of 回復するing to be re-解放(する)d into the countryside.
That 政策 makes for some surprising 訪問者s ? 含むing a 広大な/多数の/重要な crested grebe, which arrives in a cardboard box after 存在 攻撃する,衝突する be a car.?
The bird is terrified, and it has a long, needle-like beak that 要求するs careful 扱うing. But a little sedative 静めるs it, and an X-ray 明らかにする/漏らすs no serious 損失.?
After a few hours of 回復する at the 外科, it is ready to be 始める,決める 解放する/自由な at the nearby 貯蔵所.
'Clive's dedication to wild animals is one of the 推論する/理由s I 手配中の,お尋ね者 to work here,' explains Jo, who joined the clinic four years ago.?
'It means we have the chance to help animals and birds that さもなければ we'd rarely see の近くに up. That creates a lovely 環境 at work.'

Dr Clive (pictured) has a 支配する to 試みる/企てる to save any animal bought in to the clinic by the public rather than just pets
Last month, for instance, a 地元の brought in a 貧しく buzzard. The bird was 簡単に lying in a field, too weak to move.?
At first no one knew what the 事柄 was, but Clive discovered it had a mouth 感染 ? probably from eating 病気d city pigeons. A dose of 抗生物質s 始める,決める it to 権利s.
Any animal can get an 感染, even fish ? such as Foshy the Oranda fantail goldfish, the beloved pet of schoolboy Zack, 老年の 9.?
He's cared for Foshy since he was a toddler, but now the fish is losing 規模s and has ominous 黒人/ボイコット 位置/汚点/見つけ出すs on his fins.
の直前に 存在 brought into the clinic, Foshy had a 汚い turn... literally. He was floating on his 支援する, never a good 調印する in a fish.
This wasn't Foshy's first 近づく-death experience. He has been nervous ever since a 割れ目 appeared in his last 水槽 and water 流出/こぼすd out.?
Worse, Zack's mum scooped him up by 事故 in her 手渡すs, when she was trying to 選ぶ a dead fish out of the 戦車/タンク, and dropped him 負かす/撃墜する the 洗面所. Luckily, she realised her mistake before 紅潮/摘発するing him away.
By 診察するing some of Foshy's discarded 規模s under the microscope, the vets are able to identify his problem as a fungal 感染.?
One quick 治療 later, he's 権利 as rain. It seems this fish has more lives than a cat.
