SCENES OF CLERICAL LIFE by George Eliot
SCENES OF CLERICAL LIFE
by George Eliot
(OUP £9.99)
Troubled wives and tormented vicars feature in these three short novellas, whose earthy realism revolutionised English fiction.
They were 高度に 賞賛するd by Dickens, who guessed the author was a woman.
A gentle, self-sacrificing wife is taken for 認めるd by her reverend husband until her death in childbirth (baby number six) 揺さぶるs him into realizing how much he depended upon her.
A young woman sick with love for another man is incapable of loving the 充てるd vicar who makes her his wife. A woman, 乱打するd and 乱用d by her drunken brute of a husband, turns to drink and degradation herself, until she is saved by an evangelical preacher.
These gripping stories 描写する the lives - gossip, 競争, spats, loves and 宗教的な 論争s - of ordinary 1800s people living in a 地方の, God-feari ng Midlands town.
The 未解決の everyday problems and 混乱s 渦巻く and fascinate - much as they 渦巻く and fascinate today.
