The world によれば Freya: 会合,会う the young actress who has stepped up from teen soap to serious 演劇

She caught our attention in teen series 肌s and last year’s feel-good musical 日光 on Leith; now, at just 20, actress FREYA MAVOR is doing ‘corset time’ in Channel 4’s 復古/返還 演劇 New Worlds. And there’s no 疑問 as to who’s calling the 発射s in this career, as Daphne Lockyer discovers

Freya under the spotlight

'I prefer 事実上の/代理 to modelling because it gives you a chance to show that there’s more to you than 会合,会うs the 注目する,もくろむ'

Freya Mavor has turned up for our interview at a smart Soho hotel dressed expressly for the 目的 of 予算 航空機による travel. After our interview, she’s 長,率いるing to the airport to catch a flight to Paris ? where she 現在/一般に lives ? and has only the smallest piece of carry-on lug gage with her.

‘I’m wearing the 残り/休憩(する) of my 着せる/賦与するs. So excuse the ensemble,’ she beams, 除去するing a winter coat that 隠すs さまざまな 層s.

Fortunately, of course, this 素晴らしい Scots-born model and actress could have worn the entire contents of her laundry 貯蔵所 and still be turning 長,率いるs in the hotel 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業, as she is 権利 now. Freya is, after all, a striking, willowy blonde with a 殺し屋 smile that frequently lights up those Celtic features. No wonder that in 2011 she was the 直面する of Pringle of Scotland and 投票(する)d Fashion Icon of the Year at the Scottish Fashion Awards.

‘Modelling was a lot of fun,’ she says. ‘But really you’re just a coat hanger or a 直面する to advertise something. I prefer 事実上の/代理 because it gives you a chance to show that there’s more to you than 会合,会うs the 注目する,もくろむ.’

事実上の/代理-wise, you’ll recognise Freya from the E4 series 肌s, in which she had a long-running 役割 as the beautiful but 損失d teenage ballbreaker 小型の McGuinness. No wonder that the lad mag FHM thought to 指名する Freya as one of the world’s 100 sexiest women in 2012. ‘Oh God,’ she says, 手渡すs flapping at the very について言及する of that 投票. ‘How embarrassing. Just 同様に I tend not to take any notice of that 肉親,親類d of stuff.’

'Acting gives you a chance to show there's more to you than meets the eye'

‘But you wouldn’t want to wear the corsets too often. You can’t breathe, and going to the loo is a 20-minute 操作/手術’

What those in the know are 説 is that Freya h as a very big 未来. Recently the film 産業 bible 審査する International 投票(する)d her one of the ‘UK’s 最高の,を越す 星/主役にするs of tomorrow’, thanks to a 最近の clutch of prestigious 役割s. She was Liz, for example, in last year’s feel-good movie 日光 on Leith. Based on the 行う/開催する/段階 musical of the same 指名する, it featured Proclaimers songs with Freya herself ? daughter of オペラ singer Jude Collins ? warbling like a professional.

‘I grew up singing but around the age of 15 I stopped and became shy about singing in 前線 of people. Maybe I just felt that it was Mum’s domain.’ Her mother, she says, was delighted to help her train for the 役割: ‘I think Mum was pleased that I’d gone 支援する to singing and was enjoying it so much.’

日光 on Leith had been に先行するd by Freya’s 役割 as the ethereal Elizabeth of York in the BBC’s adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s historical romp The White Queen. And she’s been doing more ‘corset time’ in New Worlds, which is what we’re here to talk about.

‘The 衣装s in both New Worlds and The White Queen were amazing,’ she says. ‘But you wouldn’t want to wear the corsets too often. You can’t breathe, and going to the loo is a 20-minute 操作/手術.’

The prequel to New Worlds, The Devil’s Whore, was 始める,決める against the 背景 of the English Civil War, as seen through the 注目する,もくろむs of Angelica Fanshawe (the Devil’s Whore herself ? played by Andrea Riseborough). Angelica was a sexually 解放するd aristocrat who got drawn into the anti-monarchist 原因(となる), 危険ing her life to see Charles I 退位させる/宣誓証言するd and 最終的に 遂行する/発効させるd.

Freya as Beth in New Worlds

Freya as Beth in New Worlds

New Worlds 選ぶs up the story in the 1680s at the 高さ of the 復古/返還. にもかかわらず Charles II’s 約束 to be an enlightened 君主, brutality is the order of the day. 一方/合間, Angelica (now Countess of Abingdon, played by Eve Best in this series) is 試みる/企てるing to 保護物,者 Beth, the daughter we last saw as a little girl in the の近くにing scenes of The Devil’s Whore, from a world on the brink of 大混乱. Beth is played by Freya. ‘We 会合,会う her on her 21st birthday, when she’s about to become a woman,’ says Freya. ‘Until that point she has been living a 避難所d life, blissfully unaware of the horrors that are going on in England ? but that’s about to change.’

Indeed, an 無法者 turns up at her 21st birthday party hoping to 略奪する the guests to raise 基金s to buy 武器s and 供給(する)s for the anti-monarchist 原因(となる). He sees that there might be political and 通貨の advantages in 誘拐するing Beth, and carries her off.

‘She puts up a fight, of course, but the truth is that there’s an instant attraction between them. She’s going to 落ちる in love with him but she’s also going to experience a total political awakening.’

Freya giggles at my suggestion that there could be worse things than 存在 誘拐するd by Jamie Dornan, who plays the 無法者 and idealist Abe. He’s the Northern Irish actor who (機の)カム to our attention as the oddly 控訴,上告ing psychopath in the BBC thriller The 落ちる and is about to go 全世界の in the 主要な 役割 of Christian in 50 Shades of Grey.

Like Freya, he too has a background in modelling, with (弁護士の)依頼人s such as Calvin Klein. ‘When I knew I’d been cast, I Googled him and up (機の)カム all these pictures of him half naked! I was taken aback and a little bit 脅迫してさせるd,’ she 自白するs. ‘But when I finally got to work with him he was the nicest, funniest, most laid-支援する man in the world. Honestly, Jamie is a babe.’

'There isn't room to think about how famous [a role] might make you'

'There isn't room to think about how famous [a 役割] might make you'

The four young 星/主役にするs of the 演劇, 含むing Alice Englert and another former 肌s 星/主役にする, Joe Dempsie, formed a の近くに 社債 during filming (in the UK and Romania). Alice and Joe play Hope and Ned, New England colonists trying to 削減(する) 関係 with the English 栄冠を与える. ‘My character goes to America at one point in the story and Joe’s comes to England, so we became の近くに friends on 審査する and in real life.’

Freya 収容する/認めるs that before auditioning for the 役割 of 小型の in 肌s, she’d been a 抱擁する fan of the show. ‘My 年上の brother Zander and I used to watch 肌s every Thursday. My favourite character was Chris Miles, played by Joe. He talked 堅い but there were a lot of 層s to him. I never got to work with Joe in 肌s ? he’d left. But I used to think, “Oh my God, if I ever got to 会合,会う him that would be amazing.’”

The story of how the now 20-year-old Freya 設立する herself on her favourite TV show tells you

something about her tenacity. 老年の 16, she was on a bus going home from school when she overheard a conversation about 肌s. ‘Two girls were talking about there 存在 an open casting 開会/開廷/会期 and my ears pricked up. I got myself 負かす/撃墜する to Bristol where the auditions were taking place, 列d for six hours and was asked to say one line. Amazingly I was called 支援する. It was a dream come true.’

At the time, Freya was a member of the 国家の 青年 Theatre and had been a mezzo-soprano in the 国家の 青年 Choir of Scotland. She had seen her mum 成し遂げる with the Scottish オペラ and been exposed to? theatre and film from an 早期に age. ‘My dad [James Mavor is a scriptwriter and a lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University] and my grandfather and 広大な/多数の/重要な-grandfather were 伴う/関わるd in the theatre, too,’ she says.

Freya remains の近くに to both her parents and credits her love of travel on their 決定/判定勝ち(する) to move the family to フラン for a few years during her 早期に teens. ‘Mum and Dad decided to leave Edinburgh and live in La Rochelle because they 手配中の,お尋ね者 to expose Zander and me to a different culture. I learned to speak French fluently and fell in love with the country.’

Freya’s frontrunners

Reading The 塀で囲む by Marlen Haushofer,
which was recommended to me by my mum.
It’s about a woman who wakes up to discover
that she’s the last person on earth. It’s an
incredibly life-断言するing story.
Listening to I’m obsessed with the American-Chilean DJ Nicolas Jaar. He has a unique style 連合させるing elements of jazz house
with music from the 1950s.
TV I have just finished watching the final series of Breaking Bad. Wh at an 絶対 amazing ride!
Beauty 製品s I learned all about Dermalogica skincare from make-up artists and now use it all the time. I also love Bobbi Brown and 明らかにする Minerals.
Stuck in a 解除する with…my friends Sam and Mia.
We’ve known each other all our lives.
Designers I’ve recently done a photo shoot with the Acne label and fell in love with the 着せる/賦与するs. I’m not averse to the high street ? Jigsaw, Russell & Bromley…
演習 I’m not a gym bunny but I grew up doing a lot of sport and I enjoy things that challenge me 肉体的に. I’ve just 調印するd up for a four-month physical theatre course in Paris. There’ll be lots of 堅い dance and even 戦争の arts 伴う/関わるd.

Freya is 特に の近くに to her mother. ‘My mum’s a crazy, red-長,率いるd Irish woman and the wisest person I know. I hope I can be half the mother to my kids that she’s been to me.’ Still, it’s too 早期に to think about motherhood yet. Besides, she may or may not even be in a 関係. ‘I’d rather not comment,’ she says. 明確に, she’s learning 急速な/放蕩な about fame. Not so long ago she made some ill-advised comments about fancying girls. ‘And now if you Google me it says that I’m “率直に bisexual”,’ she laughs. ‘I think what I said was that I was open to all 肉親,親類d of sexualities, but that doesn’t make me, 本人自身で, bisexual. 現実に, in my own life I’m 異性愛の.’

While she’s at it, she’d also like to put t he 記録,記録的な/記録する straight about a story 伴う/関わるing Niall Horan of One Direction fame. She’s meant to have turned him 負かす/撃墜する for a date. ‘Really?’ she says. ‘I don’t even know how a rumour like that starts because there’s no truth in it at all.’

She finds sanity in escaping abroad. Last year she spent three months in Spain with friends, and she already has a 計画(する) ticket for a three-month 小旅行する of Australia on her own next year. ‘I’m pretty used to travelling alone,’ she says. ‘It doesn’t 脅す me. I love the sense of freedom it gives you. And if I did have someone in my life ? and I’m not 説 I do ? I’d travel anyway because the time you spend apart is as important as the time you spend together.’

She sees 平行のs between herself and Beth in New Worlds. Both prize their freedom. Unlike Beth, she wouldn’t 述べる herself as a firebrand. ‘But I do have moments of 存在 やめる outspoken. I was brought up as a feminist and it got me 伴う/関わるd in a lot of arguments.’

As a beautiful young actress herself, she’s aware, too, of how easily she could be 偉業/利用するd. She について言及するs Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. ‘I find what they do appalling,’ she says. ‘The idea that they’re embracing their sexuality ? I don’t see how that equates to leaving nothing to the imagination. I don’t see that as 権力を与えるing. I just see it as 許すing yourself to be manipulated by the money 製造者s. It’s demoralising and pathetic.’

She’s had her own moments of 不確定, she says. ‘When I was 存在 cast in The White Queen I was told there was nudity 伴う/関わるd. It was something I had to agree to before I 調印するd the 契約. I said 承認する because I really 手配中の,お尋ね者 the 職業.

‘You need to ask yourself questions: “Does it serve the story? Is it beautifully 発射? Is it truthful or is it just there to titillate the audience?”

‘New Worlds is a 熱烈な story and yet the love scenes are 簡単に hinted at ? the touch of a 手渡す, the glimpse of some flesh. It’s a lot sexier than a 十分な-on love scene.’

She hopes テレビ視聴者s will love it too but seems blissfully unaware that working on a Peter Flannery 事業/計画(する) could catapult her still その上の into the スポットライト. Daniel Craig and Christopher Eccleston, for example, 削減(する) their teeth in Our Friends in the North; Andrea Riseborough and Michael Fassbender in The Devil’s Whore. ‘But when you work on something with the intensity of New Worlds, all you really think about is doing the 職業 同様に as you can. There isn’t room to think about how famous it might make you,’ she says.

Should Hollywood come calling, she may or may not be at home. ‘At the moment I love working in the UK and in フラン. I idolise actresses like Kristin Scott Thomas who are able to work in both languages. That’s my ambition.’

She’s having a 爆破 in Paris, too. ‘I 約束d myself that I’d go 支援する to フラン when I was old enough and that’s what I’ve done. I live in a “shoebox” in the 16th arrondissement,’ she says. ‘I’m in heaven.’

New Worlds will be on Channel 4 next month
