It has been a year when English football

was finally shaken from its complacency

by the 失敗 of the 国家の team to

reach the Euro 2008 決勝戦. Or at least you

hope so. The danger is that we 簡単に put

it all 負かす/撃墜する to a bad experience, get over

and continue with our self-delusion about the

health and 質 of our game and the

competence of some of the people running it.

Money washes around the 首相 League

and the Football 協会. The desperation

of clubs 支払う/賃金ing over the 半端物s in the January

移転 window chasing too few good players

ーするために 押し進める for honours or 保存する their

As does the

FA's 新規採用 of the £6 million man, Fabio

Capello.

We should not 混乱させる marketability with

ability, however. The main hope for 2008 must

be that instead of 簡単に seeing money as a

panacea, imagining that problems will go

away with the splash of cash, more wit and

知恵 is 適用するd to 解答s.

You can only hope, too, for ...

If the English game is to begin

its rehabilitation in 2008, let it be with

the 伝統的な kick-start to the second half of

the 国内の season. We need a 解除する and what

better than a few 思い出の品s of our game's

virtues of pride and passion, thrills and 流出/こぼすs.

We may need more technical 技術s but no

need to 無視(する) our 資産s.

2 FIFA to sort out the African Cup of

Nations. In another week or so, we will

have 経営者/支配人s lamenting the loss of

players to the tournament. All 権利, so they

knew the 状況/情勢 when they 調印するd these

players but it is surely time for the game's

world 治める/統治するing 団体/死体 to standardise the

fixture calendar t o 避ける disruption in winter.

of the Munich 空気/公表する 災害. Winning the

be Manchester 部隊d's apt

尊敬の印 to those who 死なせる/死ぬd

on February 6. On the day,

you hope the FA 示す the

occasion before England's

game against Switzerland

at Wembley and that fans

of other clubs 静かに put

aside any 競争.

League. No bias of support

here, 単に the 願望(する) that

Arsene Wenger's brand of

fluent, attacking football

勝つ/広く一帯に広がるs for two 推論する/理由s: a) to show that you do

not have to spend

and b) to illustrate to

English players the

基準s of 態度 and

5 An interruption to the 最高の,を越す-four cartel.

Someone ― anyone ― please

their way into a 支持する/優勝者s League slot.

O'Neill

builds a team with young Englishmen.

6 The FA board to find some courage.

Having gone for a 安全な choice with an

too challenging, and having thrown money at

a foreign 経営者/支配人, the FA must take 活動/戦闘 on

the 国家の Football Centre and 器具/実施する a

計画(する) to raise coaching 基準s, rather than

about agreeing with it in 原則.

7 Fabio Capello to find some players.

Those spectacles the Italian wears are

Instead,

perhaps he will see 明確に enough to look

beyond those who have already been 設立する

wanting. Blackburn's Matt Derbyshire is a

personal, predatory favourite.

8 An 評価 of Euro 2008 . Also

known as: "Anyone here speak English

and play in the 首相 League?" Instead

of 主張するing we would have beaten any of the

last four, can we open our minds to what they

do better than us?

9 A 停戦 between 首相 League

and FA. There is no sin in making

money, nor selling your wares, but we

need to recognise the value of our game rather

than just its price. A 妥協, rather than

ploughing two furrows on such 問題/発行するs as the

開発 of youngsters, would be a start.

10 The penny dropping for Joey

Barton. He has had the counselling

and talked the talk. Now he has

time to decide on walking the walk and

現実に using the 道具s he has been given to

help him manage his temper. In many ways,

Barton symbolises the English game. Once his

type of industrious midfielder was plentiful,

now the few have become

too precious, in both

character and 財政上の value. 予定 to modern 傾向s he is

overhyped and, 予定 to

dysfunctional.Underneath it

all, there is much good,

however. Perhaps this will

be the year when he and

the game in this country end

their 否定.

A 首相 League coach

was lamenting to me how frozen

or waterlogged pitches 妨げる the

team's 準備. There was a

解答, he said, though with

some sadness. Since they flew to

most away games, why not base

the squad in, say, Majorca and

come over for all games? Costs

might be lower and it could

even be a way of attracting

better players to the club. I

について言及する this 雑談(する) not to 申し込む/申し出 the

idea but, knowing fans will surely

反対する, to 示唆する that the 首相

to 阻止する it in the bud.
