Why life after Tim is looking very grim for Britain

From the Wimbledon locker room to the West End restaurant to their Chelsea hotel, Britain's Davis Cup team left a stream of empty

them on Saturday night as they celebrated both victory and Tim Henman's career.

But, as with all good parties, there is always a time of reckoning once the empties have been (疑いを)晴らすd up ― and that will arrive today.

Henman Davis Cup

For when British tennis wakes up

it may have a distinctly Monday

morning feeling.

The 最高位のs do not 嘘(をつく) and the

first 地位,任命する-Henman listings will

show Andy Murray in splendid

孤立/分離 as far as active home

代表 goes inside the

That means it will be 極端に

difficult to make any impression on

the Davis Cup World Group when

the draw for next year's

競争 is made this Thursday, even

though Murray's 年上の brother

Jamie is a developing

Britain's 欠如(する) of a seeding means

they will probably be given a 堅い

assignment against the likes of

or Argentina in February's first

The main significance of this

週末's victory against a

muchdepleted Croatia is therefore likely

to remain that it 供給するd a fitting send- off for Henman, who will

surely be 支援する at some point in the

Davis Cup as captain.

One thing for sure is that the next

squad will have a very Scottish look

to it, with Glasgow's Jamie

giving a glimpse of things to come

as he played the final dead

Marin Cilic.

For the foreseeable 未来, Britain

will be 大部分は a one-family team,

rather like the 黒人/ボイコット brothers used

to be for Zimbabwe or the Maleeva

sisters were for Bulgaria in

women's 競争s.

Jamie Baker

It will be several years before we

know whether the Lawn Tennis

協会's 政策 of spending

抱擁する sums in attracting the world's

best coaches is 支払う/賃金ing off.

The British courtside '(法廷の)裁判' for

this tie was 十分な of them ― as

cosmopolitan and expensively

組み立てる/集結するd as the (法廷の)裁判 you might

find for any 首相 League

football team.

Roger Draper, the LTA 長,指導者 (n)役員/(a)執行力のある, deserves to be given some

time to see if his 戦略 will work

in producing high- class players

beyond the Murrays because

生き返らせるing the moribund home game

The fact is,

however, that British 最高位のs are

getting worse and worse under his

stewardship, with only four men in

the world's 最高の,を越す 250 compared to

nine during Wimbledon 2005.

While there are no women in the

100, their picture is marginally

more 約束ing but Draper's

comment last week that "nobody

can really 非難する the LTA any more"

cannot be 許すd to pass

unchecked.

持つ/拘留するs the 力/強力にする and the purse

strings and one of the problems

continues to be that they 主張する on

存在 so 伴う/関わるd in the whole

商売/仕事 of trying to produce エリート

players.

They tend to be better at doing

things like putting on this

afternoon with a short speech to the

(人が)群がる and a last wave.

In his final musings as an active

player he pointed out that he was

階級d only 10th in the country as

an under 16, which shows what can

be 達成するd with the 権利 levels of

He leaves the sport ― doubtless

一時的に ― believing that the

penny might be dropping の中で

the 青年 of today.

As an avowed teetotaller, there

was never any danger of the

previous night's 祝賀s

影響する/感情ing Andy Murray's ability to

play a dead rubber in which he

Roko Karanusic 6-4, 7-6.

His presence tempered any (人が)群がる

失望 at Henman's

request to finish his career on the

high of winning the tie in

パン職人, 階級d 226, stepped in for

その上の experience of playing in a

Davis Cup atmosphere but could

not 完全にする a whitewash against

the impressive 18-year-old Cilic.

What we would not give to find

one like him.

The 質 he

showed was a 思い出の品 of the

realities of world tennis and just how

堅い this tie would have been had

Croatia had a 十分な 手渡す of players.
