'Like it or not', Britannia still 支配するs part of Cyprus

Next to a palm tree, the Union Jack hangs limply on a 政治家 outside a simple courthouse built １０年間s ago on this eastern Mediterranean island.
"Morning your honour," the clerk said in English to the British 裁判官, beginning another day at Her Majesty's 法廷，裁判所 in Waterloo Road, Dhekelia.
In this part of Cyprus, a former British 植民地, Britain is still in 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 and Cypriots appear before the 法廷，裁判所.
Some on the island に例える the 協定 to continued colonisation. Scholars called it "undeniably anachronistic" and "高度に unusual".
"It is different," said Major General 略奪する Thomson, the 最高の，を越す 公式の／役人 in the 君主 areas, "but it's different because it serves a different 目的."
Cyprus became 独立した・無所属 from Britain in 1960 after a 血まみれの ゲリラ兵 （選挙などの）運動をする.

Under that 条約, which Greece and Turkey also 調印するd, Britain 保持するd 支配（する）／統制する over two 軍の zones in the east and south of the island, 君主 Base Areas (SBAs) where thousands of Cypriots live -- より数が多いing British 軍隊／機動隊s.
They 構成する the only British overseas 領土 効果的に run through the defence 省, Thomson, 55, told AFP, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II hanging in his office.
His three "guiding 原則s" are to operate the bases, 協力する with Cyprus and to "look after the 利益／興味s of the people who live there".
Thomson 監督するs SBA police, 法廷，裁判所s, customs and 移民／移住, and a 刑務所，拘置所 -- all run 分かれて from the 共和国 of Cyprus -- though 法律s in the base areas 反映する Cypriot 規則s.
SBA officers, most of whom are Cypriots, have 裁判権 over 12,000 compatriots living on base land along with 5,662 British 軍隊／機動隊s and their families.
Since no physical 国境s separate SBA land from the 共和国 of Cyprus, it's difficult to tell where their 裁判権 begins -- except for the tell-tale cricket pitch lying in a みごたえのある valley.
Beaches, 古代の 廃虚s and bird-rich wetlands are attractions for tourists, who are also 支配する to SBA 法律.
Nicos Costa, one person before the 法廷，裁判所, was 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金d with 運動ing while disqualified. It "is a serious offence", the 裁判官 said, as Costa 直面するd a possible two-year 刑務所，拘置所 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語.

"It's a bit strange. Don't you think?" said Costas Evripidou, a community 議員 in Akrotiri, a 丘の頂上 village on SBA land on Cyprus's southern tip.
For Evripidou, the 法廷，裁判所 symbolises an 半端物 協定 which 限界s his 権利s and is seen by many as "残余s of the 植民地s".

Akrotiri lies just outside the 盗品故買者s of a 王室の 空気／公表する 軍隊 base, from where 軍用機s 雷鳴 off as part of the international 連合 against the Islamic 明言する／公表する group.
The base has supported 操作／手術s in Iraq and Afghanistan, and helped 増強する 北大西洋条約機構's eastern 側面に位置する after Russia 侵略するd ウクライナ共和国.
British 行政 of Cypriots is "not 論理（学）の anymore", argued George Perdikis, who 抗議するd at the base during two １０年間s as a Green party 国会議員.
公式の／役人s from Cyprus and Britain 譲歩するd there had been unequal 治療 of Cypriot SBA 居住（者）s 予定 to 制限s on developing their 所有物／資産／財産, which have now changed under new 支配するs 可決する・採択するd last month.
Andreas Theophanous, 長，率いる of the University of Nicosia's politics department, said 許すing 非，不，無-軍の 開発 on base land is "a positi ve step" but "it's not enough".
The island has been divided since 1974 when Turkey 侵略するd に引き続いて a Greek-sponsored クーデター.
The 共和国 of Cyprus, a European Union member with an 圧倒的に Greek-Cypriot 大多数, 支配（する）／統制するs the southern two-thirds of the island. Only Ankara recognises the self-宣言するd Turkish 共和国 of Northern Cyprus.
Theophanous and other Cypriots see Britain's 役割 as intertwined with what they call the "Cyprus problem".
"Britain has 利益d from the bases," he said, but did not in turn fulfil its 条約 義務s "to 保護する the 領土の 正直さ, 主権，独立 and independence of the 共和国 of Cyprus".
Anti-British 怒り／怒る resurfaced when Cypriot groups withdrew from an SBA charity concert 場内取引員／株価 the queen's Platinum Jubilee. Critics have linked her to Britain's hanging of nine Cypriots during the 1955-59 武装した struggle by Greek 国家主義者s to 部隊 Cyprus with Greece.

"Britain has not come to 条件 with the past," said Theophanous, calling for London to make a 象徴的な gesture 認めるing "those 遂行する／発効させるd by the British 当局 in the 1950s" and to work to end the Turkish 占領／職業.

Apart from 軍用機s and what Thomson called a "重要な" 知能 能力, the bases host two infantry 大軍, one on 代替要員，物 for 早い （軍隊などの）展開，配備. They help make Britain, its 北大西洋条約機構 同盟（する）s, and the 地域 safer, he said.
"It gives us 全世界の presence," he said, 申し込む／申し出ing "戦略の advantage" to the West, with no disadvantages for Cypriots.
Ypsonas 市長 Pantelis Georgiou can see things from both 味方するs. About 25 パーセント of his community, and 概略で 1,000 居住（者）s, lies inside the base.
