Saudi FM in first visit to Iraq since 2003

Saudi 外務大臣 Adel al-Jubeir held 会談 in Baghdad with Iraq's leadership Saturday, the first such visit by a 長，指導者 外交官 from the kingdom since 2003.
Iraqi 総理大臣 Haider al-Abadi received Jubeir and his …を伴ってing 代表, a 声明 from his office said, a 重要な step in 成果／努力s to normalise frosty 関係.

Abadi, who has been at the 舵輪／支配 since 2014, has supported 成果／努力s to 改善する 緊張するd 関係 but the road to normalisation has been rocky.
Thamer al-Sabhan, whose 信任状 were received in January 2016, became the first Saudi 外交官／大使 to Iraq in a ４半期/4分の1 century, after relations were 削減（する） に引き続いて ex-大統領，／社長 Saddam Hussein's 1990 侵略 of Kuwait.

Saudi Arabia is very 人気がない の中で Iraq's Shiite 大多数 and often （刑事）被告 of direct support to the IS jihadists that took over a third of the country in 2014.
Saudi Arabia 名目上 supports the fight against IS but Iraq and other partners have argued it needs to do more to help durably 敗北・負かす IS and its ideology.

"Jubeir congratulated Iraq on the victories 達成するd against Daesh and 誓約（する）d Saudi Arabia's support to Iraq in fighting テロ行為," the 声明 from Abadi's office said.
It said the 大臣 had also "表明するd Saudi Arabia's 乗り気 to 支援する the 安定 of 解放するd areas."
While Iraq has often 苦しむd from 存在 turned into a 戦場 where the 競争 of its 隣人s Iran and Saudi Arabia -- the 地域's Shiite and Sunni イスラム教徒 powerhouses -- played out, the Iraqi 政府 公式の／役人 said there was an 適切な時期 for Baghdad.
"The whole 地域 is 長，率いるing に向かって 妥協 and Saudi Arabia sees Iraq as an important player to have on its 味方する," he said. "Iraq's ne utrality could make it a ground for Iranian-Saudi 親善."
