Review: 'Red ロケット／急騰する' a 広大な／多数の／重要な look at a conman in our 中央
Mikey Saber, the antihero of Sean パン職人´s new film, has a bit of a problem during 職業 interviews. He has a 穴を開ける in his 再開する - stretching some 20 years.
He explains to the bosses at Dollar General or the 地元の diner that he was "self-雇うd" or was in "entertainment." The 見込みのある 雇用者s just want to know what he was doing for so long. "I'm a porn 星／主役にする," he finally 収容する／認めるs.
That's an exploitative field for the ultimate exploiter. Mikey is a good-looking dude who 会談 a mile-a-minute, a charmingly charismatic egoist - "Google me! Twenty-one million 見解（をとる）s on PornHub" - who 持つ／拘留するs grievances and is always dreaming big.
But when we 会合，会う him in "Red ロケット／急騰する," he's a penniless washed up ex-porn 星／主役にする who has left Hollywood - driven out and beaten up, more likely - and taken a bus to a place he never thought he'd 結局最後にはーなる: begging his estranged wife to let him 衝突，墜落 with her in Texas City, Texas. He can't find a 職業 - that porn thing is too much for many - so he ends up selling 少しのd.
Mikey is a very hard character to play 井戸／弁護士席 but Simon Rex has his rascally number. We never 落ちる for his 巧みな操作s but, from afar, admire his machinations, nonetheless. Rex is perfect playing the guy who's the life of the party but not the guy you can ever rely on for anything. There's a 推論する／理由 NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" opens the film and becomes a motif.
パン職人 - who co-wrote the script with たびたび（訪れる） 協力者 Chris Bergoch - uses Mikey to tell us about ourselves. He´s a conman まっただ中に the sad and broken but honorable folk who live hard by the 湾 Coast gas 精油所s, which belch 解雇する／砲火／射撃 and smoke as they sit home watching TV and belching out cigarette smoke. パン職人 uses Mikey to 警告する us about self-deluded grifters and the havoc they can 原因（となる）. Not coincidentally, the film is 始める，決める as Donald Trump is about to 勝利，勝つ the White House.

This is a tricky movie, not a tale of redemption or a character 熟考する／考慮する of a man rising up after hitting 激しく揺する 底（に届く）. No, our man-boy Mikey is hiding out, riding a kids' bike, not 再燃するing a romance with his wife (a brilliant Bree Elrod) or bettering himself. It will soon 夜明け on the テレビ視聴者 that he's only out for himself and he thinks he's 設立する his ticket 支援する to the big time - a 17-year-old 労働者 at a doughnut shop.
If he can 偉業／利用する this young woman - first-timer Suzanna Son, terrifically playing a girl-woman 愛称d Strawberry - into porn, he can return to his 高さs. "She's my way 支援する in," he says to a friend. "I'm so blessed."
テレビ視聴者s will likely wince as he grooms her - "You could be a 抱擁する 星／主役にする," he says to her - and "Red ロケット／急騰する" is hard to watch once we realize that Mikey isn't 有能な of real love, unless it's self love. Their first date is at a （土地などの）細長い一片 club and they consummate their union in the bed of a 好転.
The film sits 井戸／弁護士席 in パン職人´s career, whose previous 作品 "The Florida 事業／計画（する）" and "Tangerine" also dealt with sex 労働者s on the 利ざやs and mixed professional actors and real people. "Red ロケット／急騰する" is filled with パン職人's people - the deluded and 降伏するd, those drifting, paycheck to paycheck, far from the 有望な lights, unless they're the 精油所 lights.
A 批判的な event に向かって the end turns into a watershed moment for Mikey, a 実験（する） of his character. But if you're looking for a 奇蹟 from him, you're as deluded as he is. An open-ended ending を待つs, with a final scene open to many 解釈／通訳s. "Red ロケット／急騰する" could have 急に上がるd in a 伝統的な Hollywood feel-good way but instead stays small and 負かす／撃墜する to the ground, sticking with you uncomfortably and brilliantly.
"Red ロケット／急騰する," an a24 解放（する）, is 率d R for 暴力／激しさ, language, nudity and sex. Running time: 128 minutes. Three 星／主役にするs out of four.
