When mere paint won't do it: Bike 小道/航路s around the world
BOSTON (AP) ― Bike 小道/航路s are 発展させるing. Cities are ますます changing them to make them safer in light of 致命的な 衝突,墜落s 伴う/関わるing cyclists and cars.
From Boston to San Francisco and New York to Tokyo, 伝統的な bike 小道/航路s running と一緒に 乗り物 traffic are 存在 取って代わるd in 好意 of "保護するd" 小道/航路s or "cycletracks," where physical 障壁s like 固める/コンクリート 抑制(する)s, planters or 盗品故買者s separate cyclists from 乗り物 traffic.
"For 50 years, we've just been putting 負かす/撃墜する a (土地などの)細長い一片 of white paint, and that was how you 融通するd bikes on busy streets," says Martha Roskowski, director of People for Bikes, a 玉石, Colorado-based advocacy group that's calling for better designed bike 小道/航路s. ___
WHERE IT'S HAPPENING
保護するd 小道/航路s have been sprouting up in the U.S. since at least 2007, when New York started rolling them out on a wide 規模.
Today, there are 概略で 240 miles of 小道/航路s in 94 cities, によれば People for Bikes. That's an 増加する from about 100 miles of 小道/航路s in 32 cities in 2013, though still a tiny fraction of all bike 小道/航路s, Roskowski says.
This year alone, at least two dozen cities have so far 任命する/導入するd new types of 小道/航路s, the organization says.
In Chicago, 市長 Rahm Emanuel has 約束d to build 50 miles of the 小道/航路s over the next three years on 最高の,を越す of 9 miles this year.
And in greater Boston, where 最近の 致命的な cycle 事故s have 誘発するd calls for better 小道/航路s, a short stretch of Beacon Street 主要な to the Fenway Park area has been reconfigured.
列/漕ぐ/騒動s of parked cars now serve as a 衝撃を和らげるもの to cyclists, and there are 計画(する)s to 延長する that path and 会社にする/組み込む the design on other major arteries.
___
NOT CREATED EQUAL
Designs for 保護するd 小道/航路s 変化させる by city, and not all have been 温かく received.
Along a short part of San Francisco's famous Market Street, pavement nearest the 抑制(する) was recently built up higher than 乗り物 小道/航路s to create a 際立った path for bikes.
But Chris Cassidy, of the San Francisco Bicycle 連合, says the city's first 実験(する) of a "raised" bike 小道/航路 still leaves something to be 願望(する)d because 乗り物s are still parking in the 小道/航路.
In Washington, D. C., the bike 小道/航路 along Pennsylvania Avenue between the (ワシントンの)連邦議会議事堂 and White House has 証明するd popular since it was 任命する/導入するd in 2010. But some cycling 支持するs 不平(をいう) its design ― 位置を示すd at the 中心 of the 幅の広い thoroughfare ― is impractical and 危険な.
Greg 法案ing, 長,率いる of the Washington Area Bicyclist 協会, says the 中心 小道/航路 design won't be repeated as the 小道/航路 is 延長するd past the White House. New rubber 障壁s were also 任命する/導入するd last year to discourage cars from making risky and 違法な U-turns through the bike 小道/航路.
___
LOCAL OPPOSITION
の中で the most bitter bike 小道/航路 論争s is the 現在進行中の, five-year 合法的な 戦う/戦い 行うd by 豊富な and powerful 居住(者)s in Brooklyn, New York.
Construction of a parked-car-保護するd bike path along Prospect Park 要求するd 排除/予選 of one 乗り物 小道/航路 in 2010.
Norman Steisel, a former 副 市長, says he and other Park Slope 居住(者)s 簡単に 論争 the traffic and safety data on which the city based its final 決定/判定勝ち(する). "You've got to be somewhat respectful for how you get these things done," he says.
In downtown Philadelphia, some two-小道/航路 roads are 予定するd to lose a 乗り物 travel 小道/航路 to 融通する new 保護するd bike 小道/航路s.
But Jonathan Broh, 大統領,/社長 of the city's Washington Square West 市民の 協会, says he worries that 蓄える/店s will have a harder time receiving 配達/演説/出産s and that school bus and taxi 好転s will snarl traffic.
___
EUROPE MORE ADVANCED
保護するd bike 小道/航路s aren't a novel idea in Copenhagen, Denmark; Amsterdam; and other European cities where they've bee n around for 10年間s.
But even cities with いっそう少なく of a biking tradition are embracing the 小道/航路s.
London 顕著に opened a number of "cycle superhighways" meant to 結局 crisscross the city. Cyclists on these 大勝するs are separated from 乗り物 traffic at 決定的な segments by a 抑制(する).
The city has also seen lofty 提案s for elevated bike 主要道路s spanning the Thames River or running above 鉄道 lines, 同様に as 地下組織の bike paths 利用するing old subway tunnels.
___
ASIA AND BEYOND
Tokyo and other Japanese cities have long had a strong cycling culture, but some of their 保護するd 小道/航路s are placed 直接/まっすぐに on sidewalks.
That 現在のs challenges as cyclists and 歩行者s いつかs compete for the same space, says Mikael Colville-Andersen, CEO of Copenhagenize Design Co., a Danish 会社/堅い that 作品 with cities on bike 組織/基盤/下部構造 事業/計画(する)s.
Two of 中国's largest cities, Guangzhou and Shanghai, are also 投資するing ひどく in 保護するd 小道/航路s and other bike 組織/基盤/下部構造, 専門家s say, and India has made 進歩 in 改善するing its 小道/航路s.
In South America, the Argentinean 資本/首都 of Buenos 空気/公表するs has built nearly 90 miles of bike 小道/航路s, many of them 保護するd, in just three years.
"Cities are becoming more 合理的な/理性的な again, after the folly of car-centric planning," Colville-Andersen says.
