ARCHIVES REVEAL DONKEY AUCTION

Donkeys were auctioned off in Ireland as part of 成果/努力s to raise 基金s during the First World War, century-old public 記録,記録的な/記録するs have shown.

Proceeds from the November, 1914 donkey sale in Bangor, Co 負かす/撃墜する, were given to the Belgium 救済 基金 - an international 成果/努力 to 供給する food to a nation 苦しむing 不足s under German 占領/職業.

Many ベルギーs were driven to the brink of 餓死 as Germany requisitioned 供給(する)s to 料金d its own 軍隊/機動隊s.

The Irish were 直面するd with stark 証拠 of this when many 難民s from Belgium started arriving on their shores に引き続いて the 突発/発生 of war in August 1914.

Alyson Stanford from PRONI said it was just one of many thousands of 文書s from the period held by the Public 記録,記録的な/記録するs Office which illuminates the experiences of Irish men and women.

"While working on a remote enquiry, I (機の)カム across this charming photograph of a donkey with some children," she said.

"It is amazing to find that such charitable 活動/戦闘s were 存在 made by 地元の people with all 肉親,親類d of items, and animals, up for auction with the proceeds going to charitable 原因(となる)s.

"The proceeds of this sale would be given to the 国家の and ベルギー 救済 基金s which had been in the fore 予定 to the 突発/発生 of war in 1914. I hope that at the end of the day a generous 量 of money was raised and more importantly the donkey went to a good home."

The war was fought in the period just before Ireland was partitioned. More than 200,000 men and women from across the island served with the fighting 軍隊s. Around 30,000 lost their lives.
