Period À½ÉÊs to be made ÍøÍѤǤ¤ë in schools

Period À½ÉÊs will be ÍøÍѤǤ¤ë to all schools and colleges in England from next week, the À¯ÉÜ has said.

The move will ³Î¼Â¤Ë¤¹¤ë pupils do not ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ë out on lessons ͽÄê to their period and help break É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë stigma surrounding menstruation, ¤Ë¤è¤ì¤Ð the Department for Education (DfE).

Under the ´ð¶âd ·×²è¡¿±¢ËÅ, schools and colleges will be able to order a ÈÏ°Ï of sanitary À½ÉÊs, ´Þ¤àing eco-friendly ÁªÂòs, so that they are ÍøÍѤǤ¤ë when young women need them.

Then ¡Ê¥É¥¤¥Ä¤Ê¤É¤Î¡Ë¼óÁê¡¿¡ÊÂç³Ø¤Î¡Ë³ØĹ Philip Hammond first ȯɽ¤¹¤ëd ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës to ´ð¶â ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê sanitary À½ÉÊs in England¡Çs Â裲°Ì schools last year. This was later ±äŤ¹¤ëd to ´Þ¤à ºÇ½é¤Î¡¿¼çÍפÊs.

Áªµó±¿Æ°¼Ôs had been calling for the À¯ÉÜ to take ³èư¡¿ÀïÆ® ͽÄê to ´Ø¿´s that some girls, ÆÃ¤Ë those from lower-income families, could ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ë class during their periods as they are unable to afford sanitary À½ÉÊs.

Children and families Âç¿Ã Michelle Donelan said: ¡ÈPeriods are a normal part of everyday life and we do not want young people ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Î out on lessons because of them.

¡ÈWe know that it is not Ê¿°×¤Ê for everyone to Àܶá period À½ÉÊs where and when they need them.

¡ÈThis ·×²è¡¿±¢ËÅ will ¤ò¼è¤ê°ú¤¤¹¤ë those problems so young people can go about their daily lives without getting caught out if they have come on their period ÆÍÁ³¤Ë, forgotten to bring À½ÉÊs with them or if they can¡Çt afford the À½ÉÊs they need.¡ É

¸¦µæ carried out for the charity ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë International UK in 2017, into the ±äŤ¹¤ë of period poverty in the UK, ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë one in 10 young women Ϸǯ¤Î 14-21 have been unable to afford sanitary wear while 12% had had to improvise Êݸî ͽÄê to affordability ÌäÂ꡿ȯ¹Ô¤¹¤ës.

Amika George, ÁÏΩ¼Ô of the #FreePeriods ¡ÊÁªµó¤Ê¤É¤Î¡Ë±¿Æ°¤ò¤¹¤ë group, said: ¡ÈAs a grassroots, student-led movement, ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê Periods has been fighting for every Áª¤Ó½Ð¤¹¡¿ÆÈ¿È child in this country to be able to go to school without worrying about their next pad or tampon. For the first time in history, this ·×²è¡¿±¢ËÅ will ³Î¼Â¤Ë¤¹¤ë that becomes a reality.¡É

She Äɲ乤ëd: ¡ÈWe ask that schools have open conversations with students about?what?they need and start Ä´°õ up to the ·×²è¡¿±¢ËÅ ? no child must ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ë out. ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê À½ÉÊs in schools will ³Î¼Â¤Ë¤¹¤ë that every child can learn and be their very best, without periods »ý¤Ä¡¿¹´Î±¤¹¤ëing them »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë.¡É

Rose Caldwell, Ĺ¡¤»ØƳ¼Ô (n)Ìò°÷¡¿(a)¼¹¹ÔÎϤΤ¢¤ë of ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë International UK, said: ¡ÈWe know that some girls ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ë school because they don¡Çt have period À½ÉÊs, and that they have had to use items like ÀöÌ̽ê roll and socks because they can¡Çt afford anything else.

¡ÈSo having Àܶá to a ÈÏ°Ï of period À½ÉÊs at school will make a very real difference to many girls¡Ç lives.¡É

She Äɲ乤ëd that it is ·èÄêŪ¤Ê that À½ÉÊs are easily accessible to girls in schools, Äɲ乤ëing that the charity¡Çs ¸¦µæ had ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë that only 31% of young women feel comfortable asking teachers for period Êݸî.

Paul Whiteman, general Ĺ´± of the ¹ñ²È¤Î ¶¨²ñ of Ĺ¡¤Î¨¤¤¤ë Teachers, said the move was ¡Èexcellent news¡É.

He said: ¡ÈToo many children ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ë out on ·èÄêŪ¤Ê education each month as a ·çÇ¡¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of Àܶá to period À½ÉÊs ·³Ââs them to ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ë school.

¡ÈEven those pupils who do not ¶ì¤·¤à period poverty will Íø±× from ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê Àܶá to period À½ÉÊs, breaking É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë stigma and ³Î¼Â¤Ë¤¹¤ëing no child is without Êݸî during what can be a ¹¶·â¤ò¼õ¤±¤ä¤¹¤¤ time.¡É

The roll-out of period À½ÉÊs to England¡Çs ºÇ½é¤Î¡¿¼çÍפÊs and s econdaries comes months before health education is ͽÄê to become compulsory in ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë schools.

Both the Scottish and Welsh À¯ÉÜs have ȯɽ¤¹¤ëd ·×²è¡¿±¢ËÅs to make ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê period À½ÉÊs ÍøÍѤǤ¤ë in schools, and in Scotland, in universities ƱÍͤË.
