Where ÀìÌç²Ès Åê»ñ¤¹¤ë: Why ´ð¶â ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í Rory Stokes »Ù±ç¤¹¤ës forklift ¥È¥é¥Ã¥¯¤Ç±¿¤Ös and an insulation À½Â¤¼Ô
- Áª¤Öing Åê»ñs can be a tricky ²áÄø and choosing ¾¡Íø¼Ôs is an artform?
- Our new series quizzes ÀìÌç²È ´ð¶â ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Ís on their Åê»ñ¤¹¤ëing tips and tricks??
Each month, This is Money puts a ¾åµé¤Î ´ð¶â or Åê»ñ ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í to »Å»ö with ·ø¤¤ questions for our series, Where ÀìÌç²Ès Åê»ñ¤¹¤ë:
We want to know where they'd Åê»ñ¤¹¤ë for the next year - or even next 10 years - and what Í·ês to Èò¤±¤ë.
This week, we spoke to?Rory Stokes, Éû Âç¿Ã¤ÎÃÏ°Ì ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í?of The European Smaller Companies ¿®ÍÑ.?
This Åê»ñ ¿®ÍÑ Åê»ñ¤¹¤ës in smaller and medium sized companies in Europe, ½ü³°¤¹¤ëing the UK.?
It ¸½ºß¡¿°ìÈÌ¤Ë Ëǰסʤ¹¤ë¡Ës at a 12 per cent ³ä°ú to its ÂáÊ᤹¤ë »ñ»º value and ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ðs a ¡Ê³ô¼ç¤Ø¤Î¡ËÇÛÅö »º¤¹¤ë¡¿À¸¤¸¤ë of 2.75 per cent.
In the hot seat: We ¼ÁÌä¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë Rory Stokes on where he finds value, the best country to inves t in, whether Bitcoin and Tesla are ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë it and the age-old question of growth versus value
1. If you could Åê»ñ¤¹¤ë in only one company for the next 10 years, what would it be??
Rory Stokes replies:?Jungheinrich ? the company is a forklift ¥È¥é¥Ã¥¯¤Ç±¿¤Ö À½Â¤¶È¼Ô that has become a leader in the »º¶È¤Î automation ÉôÌç.?
¼«Æ°²½¤¹¤ëd electric ¥È¥é¥Ã¥¯¤Ç±¿¤Ös and their exciting new ¼«Æ°²½¤¹¤ëd compact Ãù¢ system that vertically sorts and retrieves parts for a workstation are going to help transform the way the »º¶È¤Î economy ºîÉÊ.
2. What about for the next 12 months??
Recticel in Belgium, a ¼çÍ×¤Ê European À¸»º¼Ô of insulation.?
As the economy ²óÉü¤¹¤ës and construction Áª¤Ös up, sales and Íø±×¡Ê¤ò¤¢¤²¤ë¡Ës should bounce.?
Insulation is going to be a ½ÅÍ×¤Ê part of ¸º¤º¤ëing úÁÇ Êü½Ð¡¿È¯¹Ôs in the years to come.< /p>
3. Which ÉôÌç should Åê»ñ²Ès be most excited by?
Rory Stokes, Éû Âç¿Ã¤ÎÃÏ°Ì ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í of The European Smaller Companies ¿®ÍÑ?
Smaller company »º¶È¤Îs. The dislocations ¸¶°ø¡Ê¤È¤Ê¤ë¡Ëd by the ¶¡µë¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë chain ´íµ¡ and the slowing economy are coming to a ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë, and cyclical companies like European »ñËÜ¡¿¼óÅÔ goods will begin to Íø±×.
4. What ÉôÌç would you be Èò¤±¤ëing???
US Megacap tech ? it is too expensive.
5. Which country ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ðs the best value for Åê»ñ²Ès?
Europe in general looks very good value to me at the moment, but within that we seem to be finding the best value ideas in ¥Õ¥é¥ó ¸½ºß¡¿°ìÈ̤Ë.
6. Which European country has the most growth ²ÄǽÀ¤Î¤¢¤ë?
The periphery of Europe, which was so pejoratively referred to as the PIIGS during the Eurozone ´íµ¡, now ´Þ¤à¡¿Éõ¤¸¹þ¤á¤ës some of the most dynamic economies in Europe.?
Greece and Ireland, in particular , have strong ·ÐºÑÀ®Ä¹ and are Íø±×ing from the ºÆÊÔÀ®s of the last £±£°Ç¯´Ö.?
7. Should Åê»ñ²Ès Ū growth or value ºß¸Ë¡¿³ôs??
We run a balanced Âç¿Ã¤ÎÃÏ°Ì that ÌÜŪ¡Ê¤È¤¹¤ë¡Ës to blend sensibly Äê²Á¤Ä¤¤Î growth with value with a catalyst. I don¡Çt think Åê»ñ²Ès should go all in on one style.
8. Tesla ? will it ºÇ½ªÅª¤Ë be ¤Ë¤ï¤«·Êµ¤ or ÇË»º¤·¤¿¡¿¡Ê·Ù»¡¤¬¡Ë¼êÆþ¤ì¤¹¤ë???
It is ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ that Tesla has been at the ºÇÁ°Éô of transforming an »º¶È.?
The reality is that ¼«Æ°¿ä¿Ê¤Î companies operate in a ÉôÌç where there is vicious ¶¥Áè, ÊúÍʤ¹¤ë »ñËÜ¡¿¼óÅÔ cost ɬÍ×ʪ¡¿É¬Í×¾ò·ïs and relentless ³×¿· ɬÍ×ʪ¡¿É¬Í×¾ò·ïs.?
I struggle to reconcile the valuation ¿½Å¤Îs the market has awarded Tesla with that reality.
About to ¾×ÆÍ¡¤ÄÆÍî? Stokes thinks carmaking ¶¥Áè makes hard to ÀµÅö²½¤¹¤ë Tesla's valuation
9. Is ½êÍʪ¡¿»ñ»º¡¿ºâ»º market '°ÂÁ´¤Ê as houses' or ͽÄê a ¾×ÆÍ¡¤ÄÆÍî??
House prices have already had something of a À§Àµ in real ¾ò·ï after a spike in ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó Ï¢¹ç¤µ¤»¤ëd with ²º¤ä¤«¤Ê ̾Ìܾå¤Î price µñÀ䤹¤ë¡¿Äã²¼¤¹¤ës.?
The reality is that the UK in particular is short of ½»Âð and that makes a big ¾×ÆÍ¡¤ÄÆÍî very ¤¢¤ê¤½¤¦¤â¤Ê¤¤, unless there is a ·à¤Î spike in ¼º¶È.?
The ¼ºÇÔ to build anything is the ¿äÏÀ¤¹¤ë¡¿Íýͳ the UK is stagnating though. We would be far better off with stable house prices, lots of construction and a growing economy.
10. What about UK housebuilders??
UK housebuilders have become a µ¾À·¼Ô of the UK¡Çs terrible À¯¼£²È¡¤À¯¼£²°s. The political ´í¸± is too high for me to see it as an attractive ÉôÌç.?
I would rather Åê»ñ¤¹¤ë in building ¹½À®Í×ÁÇs, to ¿¤Ó¡Ê¤ë¡Ë ¡Ê´í¸±¤Ê¤É¤Ë¡Ë¤µ¤é¤¹ to a ²óÉü¤¹¤ëing ½»Âð market.?
11. Gold - should this form a part of everyone's Âç¿Ã¤ÎÃÏ°Ì and why?
If you like pretty shiny things, then yes. ¤µ¤â¤Ê¤±¤ì¤Ð I don¡Çt really see the Íø±× of Èó¡¤ÉÔ¡¤Ìµ-»º¤¹¤ë¡¿À¸¤¸¤ëing »ñ»ºs.?
¸øÀµ¡¤ÉáÄ̳ô¼ç¸¢s are a better long-¾Î¤¹¤ë¡¤¸Æ¤Ö¡¿´ü´Ö¡¿ÍѸì Ãߤ¨¤ë¡¿Å¹ of wealth and Êݸî from ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó.
Gold: Prices ¹¶·â¤¹¤ë¡¤¾×Æͤ¹¤ë a µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë high this month, but are ¸øÀµ¡¤ÉáÄ̳ô¼ç¸¢s ¸½¼Â¤Ë a better long-¾Î¤¹¤ë¡¤¸Æ¤Ö¡¿´ü´Ö¡¿ÍѸì bet?
12. What about bitcoin??
Bitcoin is a ²òÅú looking for a problem. I see no Íø±×s that it would bring to the Âç¿Ã¤ÎÃÏ°Ì of a ˡΧ-¤¬¤Þ¤ó¤¹¤ëing ¹ṉ̃.?
13. Do you think Brexit has cost the ÉáÄ̤Ρ¿Ê¿¶Ñ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë UK Åê»ñ²È??
It really depends what you mean by 'Brexit'. Since the ¹ṉ̃Åêɼ there has ÌÀ³Î¤Ë been a higher ´í¸± ¾ÞÍ¿¶â Âç¡Ê¸ø¡Ë»È´Û°÷d to UK ºß¸Ë¡¿³ôs, but I think that is more a factor of the endless political soap ¥ª¥Ú¥é that our À¯¼£²È¡¤À¯¼£²°s ²Ý¤¹d on us rather than from leaving the EU per se.?
It definitely hasn¡Çt Íø±×d the ÉáÄ̤Ρ¿Ê¿¶Ñ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë UK Åê»ñ²È since 2016 - at least not yet.
14. Will Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψs return to ·ã¤·¤¯Íɤ¹¤ë Äì¡Ê¤ËÆϤ¯¡Ë again??
Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψs in the UK and Eurozone are too high and need to come É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë a bit, but I don¡Çt think we are going »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë to a world of ̵ Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψs.?
I believe we are going to be in a world that looks more like the pre-Á´À¤³¦¤Î ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î ´íµ¡ world, where ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó and Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψs are low Áª¤Ó½Ð¤¹¡¿ÆÈ¿È digit.
¥®¥ã¥ó¥°¡Ê¸Ä¡¹¡Ë gold: Bitcoin Ëǰסʤ¹¤ë¡Ës have made many people multi-millionaires but Stokes isn't a fan and ¼¨º¶¤¹¤ës it's not something that should form part of a?ˡΧ-¤¬¤Þ¤ó¤¹¤ëing ¹ṉ̃'s Åê»ñs
15. Do you think ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó is here to stay??
It is here to stay, but will fluctuate at lower levels than the extreme ĺÅÀ¡Ê¤Ë㤹¤ë¡Ës we have seen in the last year or two.?
The deflationary dynamics that we ľÌ̤¹¤ëd, such as the introduction of Ãæ¹ñ into the Á´À¤³¦¤Î Ëǰסʤ¹¤ë¡Ëing system, the price transparency ±Æ¶Á of the internet and over-µ¬Â§ of banks, have ÂçÉôʬ¤Ï dissipated.
16. Has the Bank of England done a good ¿¦¶È?
I have been ¤ä¤á¤ë ÈãȽŪ¤Ê of policymakers. Had I been the Ãλö I would have looked at the money ¶¡µë¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë data and been far more careful in cutting Ψs and Äɵ᤹¤ëing quantitative ´ËÏ during the pandemic.?
À¯ºö is too tight now, and the Bank of England is at ´í¸± of ¸ºß too slow to ºï¸º¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë Ψs now that ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó is »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë under »ÙÇۡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÅýÀ©¤¹¤ë.
17. You Á곤¹¤ë ¡ò100,000 tomorrow. What would you do with the money??
I'd fill up my Isa allowance and then amortise my mortgage.
