SARAH VINE: The Queen asked just ONE thing of Harry and Meghan. Would it kill them to show º·É¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¦ÅÀ for her memory?
The late Queen, it seems to me, didn¡Çt ask for an awful lot. She did her ¿¦¶È with dedication and grace, lived Èæ³Ó¤·¤Æ frugally (for someone in her position), ±é½¬d her judgment with ¿ÆÀÚ and Ãηà and was, on the whole, a µö¤¹ing soul.
She was certainly endlessly ´µ¼Ô with the variously tricky egos in her life, even when they ²¡¤·¿Ê¤á¤ëd her to ¸Â³¦s most of us would have ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë intolerable.
But the one thing she did ¿äÄꤹ¤ë¡¿Í½ÁÛ¤¹¤ë, ÆÃ¤Ë from those ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë to her, was º·É¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¦ÅÀ for the Ìò³ä of ·¯¼ç¹ñ and the ²ñ¡¦¸¶Â§ itself, and a ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ understanding that neither were to be taken for ǧ¤á¤ëd nor, more importantly, °Î¶È¡¿ÍøÍѤ¹¤ëd.
For her, ¸ºß a member of the?²¦¼¼¤Î Family?was an honour not a Æø¢ ? and certainly not an ŬÀڤʻþ´ü for personal ¿¤Ó¡Ê¤ë¡Ë. That is why she was so ¹ÈϰϤˤ錄¤Ã¤Æ loved and º·É¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¦ÅÀd, and why the ·¯¼ç¹ñ was °ÂÁ´¤Ê in her ¼êÅϤ¹s.
It was also why, when?Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex Àë¸À¤¹¤ëd their ´ê˾¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë to stand É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë as working ²¦¼¼¤Îs and Äɵ᤹¤ë a life as ordinary people across the ÂçÀ¾ÍÎ, the late Queen¡Çs one stipulat ¥¤¥ª¥ó was that they would not use their HRH ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ës.
It was a gentleperson¡Çs ¶¨Äê: no ¸ø¼°¤Î¡¿Ìò¿Í documentation or ²¦¼¼¤Î Ë¡Îá was Ä´°õ¤¹¤ëd; it was ´Êñ¤Ë an understanding based on Áê¸ß¤Î º·É¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¦ÅÀ. Elizabeth II was very fond of her grandson, and he ? or so he always said ? of her.
She probably thought, having left him a tidy sum, which he Á곤¹¤ëd on his 40th birthday, ƱÍÍ¤Ë as other bequests, he and his wife would neither need nor want to break her ¿®ÍÑ. Sadly, it appears she was wrong.
As part of her ÀëÅÁ¤Î blitz for her lifestyle brand As Ever, the Duchess sat É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë this week with the make-up entrepreneur and ²¯ËüĹ¼Ô Jamie Kern Lima, who has a podcast. It was ¤ä¤á¤ë the ¶ÈÀÓ¡¿À®²Ì.

The Duchess of Sussex's ÃíÌܤ¹¤ë¡¤¤â¤¯¤í¤às glistened with ÎÞ¡¿¤Û¤³¤í¤Ós?of self-love as she spoke ? without a trace of irony ? about her time ¡Æin the ¤¶¤ó¹ès¡Ç on Jamie Kern Lima's podcast

Lima ¡ Ƴôd¡Ç an image of a small wicker basket from Meghan's lifestyle brand, As Ever, ¡Ä¤òȼ¤Ã¤Æd by a ¸ø¼°Ê¸½ñ¡¤Ç§¤á¤ë that said: ¡ÆWith the compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex¡Ç
Against a background of tinkly piano music, Lima lapped up the self-Ëþ¤µ¤»¤ëd drivel with an ɽ¸½ of beatific smuggery reminiscent of a µðÂç¡Ê¤Ê¡Ë toad who has just swallowed the biggest, fattest, juiciest Èô¹Ôµ¡¤Ç¹Ô¤¯. There were a lot of blurry cutaways of the Duchess throwing her Ĺ¡¤Î¨¤¤¤ë »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë in joyous laughter, or rolling her ÃíÌܤ¹¤ë¡¤¤â¤¯¤í¤às in faux self-deprecation. Those same ÃíÌܤ¹¤ë¡¤¤â¤¯¤í¤às glistened with ÎÞ¡¿¤Û¤³¤í¤Ós of self-love as she spoke ? without a trace of irony ? about her time ¡Æin the ¤¶¤ó¹ès¡Ç (aka living in a rather nice house on the Windsor ¹¤¤ÃϽê with not a Áª¤Ó½Ð¤¹¡¿ÆÈ¿È money worry, occasionally showing up for things in a nice dress and a tiara).
Neither of them wore make-up, ¿äÄê¤Ç¤Ï so their authenticity can be as ÌÀÇò¤Ê as their pores. As a ½Ï¹Í¤¹¤ë¡¿¹Íθ¤¹¤ë in ·çÇ¡¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of self-ǧ¼±¡¿°Õ¼±À, it¡Çs unintentionally hilarious ? and useful should you ever find yourself in need of an emetic.
So far, so predictable. But then, ¿äÄê¤Ç¤Ï °µÅݤ¹¤ëd by emotion in the ľÌ̤¹¤ë of such unalloyed joy and ÃηÃ, Lima ¡Æ³ôd¡Ç an image of a small wicker basket ´Þ¤à¡¿Éõ¤¸¹þ¤á¤ëing two tubs of ice-cream, a sprig of ¤ʾ¶É and a ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ê of the Duchess¡Çs jam, ¡Ä¤òȼ¤Ã¤Æd by a ¸ø¼°Ê¸½ñ¡¤Ç§¤á¤ë that said: ¡ÆWith the compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex¡Ç.
Now, if that doesn¡Çt come under the Ĺ¡¤Î¨¤¤¤ëing of ¡Æusing a ²¦¼¼¤Î ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ë for ¾¦¶È¤Î ÌÜŪs¡Ç, I don¡Çt know what does. Sources ¡Æ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë to the couple¡Ç have argued that, since the ˸³²¤¹¤ë was a personal gift, it does not count. But really, surely, that¡Çs just splitting hairs? (Not to ¤Ë¤Ä¤¤¤Æ¸ÀµÚ¤¹¤ë that ²Ý¤¹ing your HRH on to friends ÄÄÎ󤹤롤ȯ´ø¤¹¤ës a Prince Andrew-level of pomposity). ´Êñ¤Ë, the ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ë is not theirs to use. So why are they using it? More to the point, why do these two think they can get away with this? Do they think people are stupid? Does the Duchess think we ´Êñ¤Ë won¡Çt notice? And how much longer is she going to continue to cast herself as a µ¾À·¼Ô of the British ·¯¼ç¹ñ ? while all the time using it to flog her brand?
For this is by no means the first time. ¤Ë¤â¤«¤«¤ï¤é¤º ÌÀ¤é¤«¤Ë despising everything the ²¦¼¼¤Î Family stands for, they »Ø̾¤¹¤ëd their daughter Lilibet, which was the late Queen¡Çs °¦¾Î as a child, just to ¸Ç¤¯·ë¤ÓÉÕ¤±¤ë that ´Ø·¸. They even went so far as to ÅÐÏ¿¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë domain »Ø̾¤¹¤ës for ¡ÆLilibetDiana.com¡Ç and ¡ÆLiliDiana.com¡Ç before the child¡Çs birth.
Oh, and let¡Çs not forget the telling-off that the Duchess gave to friend Mindy Kaling, who accidentally called her ¡ÆMeghan Markle¡Ç in an episode of her Netflix show. ¡ÆYou know I¡Çm Sussex now,¡Ç she purred, with all the warmth of a tiger about to ÀÚÃǤ¹¤ë its prey¡Çs jugular.
For two people desperate to shrug off the mantle of ²¦¼¼¤Î life, Meghan and Harry seem to be very closely wrapped up in it. But in a way, it¡Çs not the Duchess I ÈóÆñ¤¹¤ë the most. At the end of the day, it¡Çs not her family she¡Çs °Î¶È¡¿ÍøÍѤ¹¤ëing (not that she¡Çs much kinder to them). It¡Çs Prince Harry¡Çs. The fact that he seems neither to mind nor want to do anything about it is telling. It¡Çs either an »Ø¼¨¡¤É½¼¨¤¹¤ëʪ of who wears the trousers in that ´Ø·¸ or proof that he really couldn¡Çt care ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ about the wishes of his late grandmother ? a woman without whom, let¡Çs ľÌ̤¹¤ë it, he would be just another balding middle-Ϸǯ¤Î man.
Prince Harry ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ës everything he has ? from the ¡ÊÈȺá¤Î¡Ë°ìÌ£ on his wife¡Çs finger to his beloved Invictus Games ? to his ²¦¼¼¤Î roots. He may not like it, but it¡Çs the truth (in fact, would Meghan Markle, as she then was, even have given him a second ¤Á¤é¤ê¤È¸«¤ë¤³¤È had he not been a prince?).
The late Queen asked just one thing of him. Would it kill him, just for once in his life, to show some º·É¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¦ÅÀ for her memory?
