Over 50? These are ten styles you're wearing which make you look old

There are 概して four fashion ages, starting in your teens with ‘Love It, Don’t Care What It Looks Like On Me’.

The second age is ‘I Love It But Should I?’ During this 段階 you discover whether you are more in the ‘Must Look On 傾向’ or the ‘Just Want To Look Gorgeous’ (軍の)野営地,陣営. It’s the longest fashion 段階 and you bend more one way than the other until, 結局, you find the 位置/汚点/見つけ出す where you’re most comfortable.

The third age is ‘Does My Bum Look Big In This?’ It’s not that you’ve never considered whether your bum looks big before, but now it’s your first consideration along with does anything else look big and do my 脚s look shorter. You still care a lot about fashion but more about how you look.

And finally there’s the fourth 行う/開催する/段階 ― the one we’re in now ― when the 無視/無効ing 優先 is Not Looking Our Age. In this 段階 you’re still fashion conscious, 団体/死体 conscious, gorgeous-率ing conscious, susceptible to the 半端物 mad 購入(する), but everything starts with trying not to look the age we are or older.

And the secret of not looking our age is 最終的に not about buying 確かな 着せる/賦与するs and 従犯者s so much as getting 熟知させるd with the Avoidable Ageing 罠(にかける)s (AAT) and making sure you don’t 落ちる into them.

There are some things you take for 認めるd that, in your fifties, you need to 再考する, like your bra size. There are 着せる/賦与するs you own that seem innocuous and useful that may need discarding 正確に because innocuous and useful is ageing. And there are 安全な 解答s you need to put on the Wear いっそう少なく 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) ― 海軍 tailoring, believe it or not.

The good news is that 直す/買収する,八百長をするing most of the ageing 罠(にかける)s doesn’t 伴う/関わる spending money...?

Still wearing 黒人/ボイコット?

Maybe you saw the picture of Helen Mirren in a pink dress that had a triangular keyhole without showing any cleavage (tick).?

A 黒人/ボイコット dress would have been predictable, and an AAT. Strong colour and a bold 削減(する) (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域s the subtle 選択s and her hair was 都合よく smooth (tick); her earrings were the size of gulls’ eggs (tick) and her lipstick was a shade of the same pink (tick).?

She looked 78 going on 58. On a personal 公式文書,認める, I couldn’t tell you what any of the women I had supper with the other night were wearing (blackish, darkish 着せる/賦与するs) apart from one seventy-something in a pink cardigan ? looking dazzling まっただ中に people young enough to be her children.?

I’ve followed 控訴 and bought an M&S cardigan in green.

存在 too tasteful?

A grey or 海軍 jacket with a white shirt and straight ジーンズs looks 広大な/多数の/重要な on your twenty-something daughter, but you may look a little underwhelming.?

(Stealth wealth dressing is not the friend of the older woman, even the 豊富な ones.) Instead, wear a red (土地などの)細長い一片d shirt; knot a patterned silk square at your throat. If you have a fun fur neck tie, wear it now with tailoring, ditto snakeprint or ヒョウ 従犯者s.?

Wear your wider ジーンズs. Get out your bigger earrings. And forget about pretty prints: go bold or abstract or go home.?

A bigger 規模 floral print in 有望な colours (no faded pastels), strong (土地などの)細長い一片s, louder 位置/汚点/見つけ出すs is the secret to 避けるing looking just too old for your pretty dress, while a flash of colour 近づく your 直面する will do more for your complexion than any anti-ageing cream.

Skipping a salon blow 乾燥した,日照りの?

The two most ありふれた ageing 罠(にかける)s are a) too done hair and b) too undone hair.??

Admittedly this is a tricky area but glossy, 井戸/弁護士席-dyed, 井戸/弁護士席-groomed hair is the 創立/基礎 of looking good for your age and you have to spend 概略で 80 per cent more time on it than you did 20 years ago.?

The natural look you wore in your thirties is messy in your fifties and tired looking by 60. An Elnett blow 乾燥した,日照りの is just as ageing, but a わずかに messed up blow 乾燥した,日照りの... bingo!??

And try some Philip Kingsley Finishing Touch ポーランドの(人)ing Serum (£12, marksandspencer.com) for last minute 向こうずね.

Sleeveless (unless you have the 武器)

You’ll often find a good looking fit and ゆらめく dress, which happens to be sleeveless, and you might even try it on, hoping for some 奇蹟, or thinking about wearing it with a cardigan, but stop 権利 there!?

If you’re not 用意が出来ている to show your 武器, don’t buy sleeveless and (sorry to bludgeon this home) unfit 武器 are 最高の,を越す of the AAT chart.?

If you do have 広大な/多数の/重要な 武器 then this counts as an exceptional feature for your age and you should get them out whenever you can.?

See Monica Lewinsky in the new Reformation (選挙などの)運動をする red two piece. Would it have had such 衝撃 with sleeves, or on a younger woman? 絶対 not on both counts.?

Past-it undies

Refresh your underwear drawer or ? to put it another way ? sort out your VPL (明白な Pants Line) and your VBB ( 明白な Bra Bulge).VBB is all about a too tight fit.?

Try bras on in a place where you can be 手段d (示すs & Spencer).?

VPL is easily solved by swapping saggy cotton for techno fabric (the secret isn’t bigger pants but a seamless, slinkier fit).?

Underwear 3pk, £16, marksandspencer.com

Underwear 3pk, £16, marksandspencer.com

I 断言する by 示すs & Spencer’s 団体/死体 範囲 Flexifit Modal high rise shorts (£16 for a three pack, marksandspencer.com) for what it’s 価値(がある).?

Everyone needs to revisit their underwear sizing 地位,任命する-50, not just because a proper fit makes all your 着せる/賦与するs look better, but because a poor fit is very?ageing. A bad bra can make you look like a 解雇(する) of potatoes; a good bra 改善するs your posture.

Not wearing sunglasses

The big mystery is why ? when sunglasses can cover your morning puffy 注目する,もくろむs, 追加する a frisson of film 星/主役にする glamour, are the one designer item we can just about afford then wear for nine months of the year ? women don’t take sunglasses more 本気で.?

Sunglasses are sophisticated, 隠すing, 配達する terrific cost-per-wear value and finish off your look the way a hat might once have done.?

Better still, these days they don’t date so much as find a new 役割. We’ve all got old sunnies stuck in a drawer.?

So long as they’re not wraparounds, get them out and wear them; think glamour all the way and never ever wear them on your 長,率いる. Ageing.?

Keeping things for the best?

Keeping things for best is a classic AAT. You don’t have to wear your best wedding dress to work 今後, but you could think about getting out your ヒョウ print coat and wearing it to death, because a bit of ヒョウ is an age uplifter in any season ? and it was big on the Dior Autumn 2024 catwalk.

The same goes for jewellery. Big pearls on hoop earrings or a 相当な chain are still going strong.?

Earrings, £55, jigsaw-online.com

A punchy earring will do much more for you these days than a feeble glinting stud.??

And a big brooch is a 広大な/多数の/重要な way to bling up plain tailoring. Take a look at Jig saw’s bold sculptural necklaces and earrings.?

Jewellery doesn’t have to be big, but the days of the delicate gold chain are over and that 控訴s us. Delicate anything disappears on the 50-加える.

Dressing 削減(する)??

A little drummer boy jacket is 罰金, but not the matching tailored culottes. A hint of a ruffle on a collar, but not a 十分な white puritan half moon or a 巨大(な) lacey ruff. Knowing your 削減(する) 限界 means checking your wardrobe for the に引き続いて and putting them in the charity shop pile:

  • 屈服するs on anything (a big 劇の 屈服する can work, a pretty 屈服する may not)
  • Delicate floral prints
  • Peter Pan collars
  • Pearl buttons
  • Decorative waistcoats
  • Short puffed sleeves
  • Pedal 麻薬売人s. They're 支援する, 避ける them.

Not 支払う/賃金ing attention to shoe 傾向s?

The 権利 shoes may be all the fashion 注射 you need.?

If you happen to have some gold strappy sandals hanging about then they are just the thing to 生き返らせる your old jumpsuit or to wear with trousers or a midi skirt.?

Silver strappies work too. And keep wearing your trainers, but, for fashion 信用性, make sure they are the 権利 ones: Adidas Sambas or Adidas 初めのs Gazelle (£85, size.co.uk) in mixed 有望なs. Anything but plain white.

Hiding your waist

Fashion has 緩和するd up and a little bit of roominess is the difference between looking modern and at 緩和する and left behind. Say no to tight and yes to 鮮明度/定義. Get used to showing a bit of waist, whether that’s French (half) tucking your shirt into the waistband of trousers, or wearing a waisted ribbed 最高の,を越す with a skirt.?
