Could you live with this every day? The Citroen Ami is Britain's cheapest, smallest, slowest and shortest-範囲 car. We've put one to the 実験(する) for the week setting it seven chores and 仕事s in seven days
First of all, wh at the hell is it?
For starters, it's not a 'car'.?The Ami technically qualifies as a 'light quadricycle', which we 二塁打-checked with Citroen and have been 保証するd that this is the 事例/患者.?That means a 16-year-old CAN 合法的に 運動 one on roads with only a moped licence.
Its oddball 乗り物 分類 also means it doesn't need any of the safety 器具/備品 製造業者s are 委任統治(領)d to bundle into new 乗客 cars. So it has 無 airbags. No 衝突,墜落 crumple zones. Not a 選び出す/独身 electronic safety 援助(する). It doesn't even have anti-lock ブレーキs, which have been a 合法的な 必要物/必要条件 since 2004.
At 2.4 metres long, 1.4 metres wide and 1.5 metres tall, it's a glorified shoebox on wheels.?And 業績/成果 is 平等に diminutive, with 力/強力にする 供給(する)d by a 5.5kW 殴打/砲列 and 8bhp electric モーター 運動ing the 前線 wheels.?
With your foot pinned to the 床に打ち倒す, it can't 越える a 30mph 速度(を上げる) 限界.?
The 殴打/砲列 lasts 'up to 46 miles' - says Citroen. And it takes three hours to 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 using a 従来の three-pin 国内の plug and socket.
Inside, there are two seats, a steering wheel and... 井戸/弁護士席, that's about it. It's sparse to say the least.?
Citroen says it's the answer to '都市の mobility'.?
Hundreds of Ami 賃貸しのs line Parisian streets, which you can 雇う for just ?0.26-a-minute (with a subscription 料金 of ?9.90 per month). It's probably nicer - and more hygienic - than taking the Metro.?
And you don't need to have any form of licence to 運動 one in フラン!
Anyone as young as 14 with a 'voiture sans permis' - a 証明書 to show you've passed a basic road safety course - can 攻撃する,衝突する the road. And because a licence isn't 要求するd, they're [報道によれば] 証明するing popular の中で the country's fraternity of disqualified 運転者s. 'The drink-driver's 乗り物 of choice' probably isn't a スローガン you'll see on advertising billboards, though.
Here in the UK, you can buy one 完全な for £7,695 (or 月毎の 支払い(額)s of £99.58 on 財政/金融). That'll get you the 入ること/参加(者)-level 見解/翻訳/版 - which is what I'm 運動ing. It has no funky hubcaps, exterior stickers or 床に打ち倒す mats like higher 削減する levels. Basic, it certainly is.?
The most expensive 見解/翻訳/版 is the Ami Tonic, which (犯罪の)一味s in at a staggering £8,695. That's a lot of money for not very much 乗り物.
Oh, and they will only sell you one with the steering wheel on the LEFT.

For ?0.26-a-minute (with a subscription 料金 of ?9.90 per month) you can whizz around the 資本/首都's streets. It's probably nicer - and more hygienic - than taking the Metro or a bus
The 目的(とする) of my week-long 貸付金 is to see if the Ami is up to the 仕事 of 成し遂げるing all types of typical daily chores.?
While it's a 乗り物 まず第一に/本来 目的(とする)d at city dwellers, I'm not one. I do, however, live in a large market town with EV 非難する 組織/基盤/下部構造, a bustling high street, 商売/仕事 parks and plenty of amenities. It's middle Britain, which makes this the ideal testbed.
I've kept a strict 記録,記録的な/記録する of each 旅行, 含むing the outside 気温, 天候 条件s and which features were used to understand the 衝撃 on the Ami's 範囲 and if it lives up to Citroen's (人命などを)奪う,主張するs.
FRIDAY: 配達/演説/出産 and a trip to the train 駅/配置する to collect the mother-in-法律
Like unpacking a Matchbox toy: The car arrives in the morning on the 支援する of a trailer. All Ami 圧力(をかける) 乗り物 have a comical 登録 number. There'll be plenty of 'monkeying around' in the little Citroen in the week ahead...?
The Ami arrives 経由で a twin-wheel trailer hitched to the 支援する of a Citroen SUV.? So puny are its dimensions that seeing it appear from its transportation 部隊 is like watching a child taking a Matchbox toy out of its 一括ing.
Paperwork 調印するd and the 重要なs 手渡すd over, I go for a quick 爆破 to familiarise myself with my new surroundings. I've been in phoneboxes bigger - and with more buttons - so it doesn't take long. Yet, I still manage to knock 9 miles off the 示すd 範囲.
And in this short space of time there are already 支配するs that will annoy me for the duration of the week.
早期に 支配するs that are constant annoyances: The 運動 select 支配(する)/統制するs 存在 位置を示すd 負かす/撃墜する to the left 味方する of the seat make it hard to operate. The 2CV-style flip-up windows can also to clatter into the wing mirrors when trying to adjust them

Firstly, the 支配(する)/統制する パネル盤 to select 運動, 逆転する and 中立の is - irritatingly - 位置を示すd to the left 味方する of the seat, on the 床に打ち倒す where the 議長,司会を務める 開始するs to the chassis. If you're wearing a long coat, dress or bulky jacket, you can't see which buttons you're 圧力(をかける)ing.
Then there's the 2CV-奮起させるd flip-up windows, which clatter into the wing mirrors if you've adjusted them to see how の近くに you are to a kerb.
Finally, the smartphone 支えるもの/所有者 is flimsier than Matt Hancock's しっかり掴む of Covid lockdown 支配するs - there's no way I'd 信用 it to not 開始する,打ち上げる my iPhone across the cabin.
すぐに after the Ami's introductory 'shakedown', I'm off to the train 駅/配置する for the car's first port of call: collecting the mother-in-法律.
She's horrified at the sight as I swing into the car park, gurning gleefully as I approach in what is the tiniest car she's 始める,決める her 注目する,もくろむs on in 60-加える years.?
She hates every second of the 1.1-mile 旅行 home, 縮むing into the seat to 保護物,者 herself from the constant finger-points the Ami attracts from passers-by.?
She 辞退するs to be seen in it again.

SATURDAY: A [不成功の] trip to the DIY 蓄える/店
Other DIY 蓄える/店s are 利用できる. A fruitless 旅行 across town to 完全にする a DIY 職業 on day 2 at least 配達するs plenty of fun...
It's the 週末, which means only one thing in this 世帯 - DIY 職業s. Which calls for a visit to the 地元の 金物類/武器類 蓄える/店.
It's the first time I've taken the Ami 負かす/撃墜する the high street, and it 獲得するs plenty of attention - be it chuckles, expletives or that gooey-注目する,もくろむd look strangers give a newborn baby. It's something you'd 簡単に have to get used to if you're going to own one.
The remaining 脚 of the 旅行 is a foot-to-the-床に打ち倒す sprint to the 産業の 広い地所 on the 郊外s of town 経由で 解放する/自由な-flowing 30mph roads.
The little Citroen 対処するs 友好的に and keeps pace with the 残り/休憩(する) of the traffic. It rather quickly 加速するs to its 28mph 最高の,を越す 速度(を上げる), so you don't feel like you're 持つ/拘留するing anyone up.?
Its combination of kart-like 中断 and direct steering 許すs you to skittle around 小型の roundabouts without barely needing to 解除する off the throttle. Momentarily at least, I can open a gap to the cars behind.
Yet the 2.3-mile trip to B&Q 証明するs fruitless. This idiot forgot to check if the item needed is in 在庫/株.
The 4.6-mile 一連の会議、交渉/完成する trip wipes 6 miles off the 示すd distance. I'm already beginning to sense that the 'up to 46 miles' 範囲 (人命などを)奪う,主張する is a tad 楽観的な.?
SUNDAY: Ami 会合,会うs Amy for a trip out for a pub lunch...
'It feels like I'm 運動ing a dodgem!' にもかかわらず some 初期の hesitancy about getting behind the wheel, Amy quickly fell for the Ami's unique 特徴
While flat-out on yesterday's futile 旅行, I did at least notice a 地元の pub we've yet to visit, which 奮起させるd today's trip out for Sunday lunch - 連合させるd with collecting the pre-ordered DIY item from yesterday's failed 遠出.
To get a second 視野 on what it's like to 運動, I 納得させるd Citroen to 追加する my wife to the 保険 政策. That means it's time for Amy to take the wheel of the Ami.
存在 an electric-car virgin, she's already hesitant about how it is going to feel compared to her 石油 car.?
The tube of bathroom sealant I really needed has arrived in 蓄える/店. Hurrah! Who says married life isn't exciting?
Threading the Ami between two far larger モーターs at the pub is no problem with its tight turning circle. With no engine under the bonnet, the 前線 wheels can turn to taxi-like angles, making parking a doddle
And the four-wheeled namesake doesn't make the greatest of first impressions.?
The tin-can clunk of the doors の近くにing, 比較して rudimentary cabin, and all-一連の会議、交渉/完成する sensation of 存在 smaller than anything else with four wheels does little to instill any 初期の 信用/信任.?
But within minutes, she's in her element. In fact, as she joyfully pitches the Ami into corners I 恐れる I won't see the 重要なs for the remaining four days.
In a fit of giggles, she 述べるs the 運動ing 特徴 as 'like a dodgem at the fairground'. That's a worry. I won't tell her about the 欠如(する) of safety features.
But it 再確認するs my own feelings about the Ami and how much fun it is to 運動. You'd need a heart of 石/投石する not to enjoy sitting at the wheel.?
On arrival for lunch, there's one 利用できる parking space in the pub car park - and it's between two 比較して enormous family モーターs. Amy has to spin the car 一連の会議、交渉/完成する to go 支援する to it, which is no problem with the Ami 有能な of 回転/交替ing 360 degrees within an area spanning just 7.2 metres. And the taxi-like turning circle makes threading the Citroen into the bay a doddle.

MONDAY: 'Can I get a large fries with my small car?'
'Is that the toy you get 解放する/自由な with the kids meal?' Navigating a 狭くする, 新たな展開ing 運動-thru was never going to be the 問題/発行する for the Ami, but getting the goods into the car and then 安全に 蓄える/店ing them on the 旅行 home was predictably 税金ing
A true 実験(する) of a car is how 井戸/弁護士席 it manages 急速な/放蕩な-food 運動-thrus. They're 狭くする, twisty and with high kerbs on both 味方するs. Big SUV drivers hate them, and it's why McDonalds, KFC and co have kept wheel repairers in 商売/仕事 for 10年間s.
Navigating the snaking 大勝する was never going to be an 問題/発行する for the microscopic Ami... it's what happens next that makes this 証明するing ground a particular point of 利益/興味.
A left-手渡す-運動-only layout means grabbing a calorific order from the collection point is a two-person 職業. Though I can 確認する that - with a struggle - a medium-size drink can pass through the 2CV-style window slot at an angle with 無 spillage. As can two 正規の/正選手 meals, though you have to pad them 負かす/撃墜する in the paper 捕らえる、獲得する first.
But it's the 欠如(する) of 貯蔵 and cubbies to keep 安全な your 急速な/放蕩な food delights that 原因(となる)s the big 頭痛 here.?
There are two cup 支えるもの/所有者s - one behind the steering wheel and another against the windscreen - though neither 証明する suitable. It turns the 2.2-mile trip home into a delicate balancing 行為/法令/行動する, 構内/化合物d by the Ami's bone-動揺させるing 中断.
Higher-spec models get - 有望な orange - plastic organiser 挿入するs that fit into the 最高の,を越す of the dashboard to 持つ/拘留する lose items. These would have come in handy on this occasion.
Today's 旅行 is the first of the week in inclement 天候.?It's noticeably colder and constant rain means the heater, 審査する demister and window wipers (which annoyingly clip the 味方する of the windscreen でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる) are on for the duration of the 4.4-mile 一連の会議、交渉/完成する trip.?
And this has an 衝撃, 削除するing 範囲 efficiency by over a third.
TUESDAY: A 底(に届く)-clenching シナリオ to 完全にする a 週刊誌 shop
It's the time of the week I hate most - grocery shopping. This occasion is 始める,決める to be more painful than ever, as the 1.6-mile road between Aldi and Tesco is mostly a 60mph 国家の 限界. That's an unnerving thought in a car that maxes out at 28?

It's that dreaded time of the week: the universally-hated food shop - the chore of all chores.?
With no boot, 貯蔵 space for groceries is at a 賞与金 and 限られた/立憲的な mostly to the 乗客 footwell. This is - hilariously - 最高潮の場面d as a 'luggage zone' by a スーツケース icon etched into the plastic 床に打ち倒す パネル盤 - I'm not so sure it will 扱う one packed for a fortnight in Tenerife!
In the first of a two-part excursion, the 貯蔵 area swallows one shopping 捕らえる、獲得する brimmed with Aldi's finest. But it's now time to 長,率いる to Tesco to get the remaining items on our 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) - and a moment I've been 恐れるing all day...
The most direct 大勝する is 1.6 miles, though one mile of this is a 選び出す/独身-carriageway road with a 国家の 速度(を上げる) 限界.?This 現在のs the first instance of taking the Citroen on a road with a 限界 twice its 最高の,を越す 速度(を上げる).?We could chicken out and circle 支援する through town, though that will be 3.6 miles door-to-door - and I'm already getting a bit twitchy about the remaining 範囲 that's creeping closer to 選び出す/独身 人物/姿/数字s.
These are the types of 決定/判定勝ち(する)s you never have to make in a 'normal' car.
But in the 目的(とする) of 徹底的な 消費者 実験(する)ing, I decide to 勇敢に立ち向かう the shorter 選択.
I thank my lucky 星/主役にするs that it's late evening and traffic 容積/容量s are low. Still, we're overtaken by seven 乗り物s on this mile-long - 底(に届く)-clenched - 実験. These passing drivers are 一般に not best pleased about 急速な/放蕩な approaching what must look to them like a pedal car on a public 主要道路, and there's plenty of flashing and hooting to 表明する their 乱暴/暴力を加える when 飛行機で行くing by.?It makes the experience only that bit more unsettling.?
The tethered 非難する cable can be unwound from an 開始 inside the 乗客 door. While you can plug into a 国内の socket with a thin-pin plug (pictured left), the adaptor lets you also fit a type 2 connecter (pictured 権利)
A 2 hour and 38 minute 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 上げるs the 殴打/砲列 almost 支援する to 十分な capacity, and at a cost of just £1.33. That's good going considering it will 供給する around 2 hours of 運動ing time

It has taken 7 miles off the 範囲 for a 5.2-mile 旅行. This has 押し進めるd the 利用できる mileage to just 9, so on return home I decide it's time to bite the 弾丸 and plug it in.
Handily, the Ami's 非難する cable is 大(公)使館員d and 蓄える/店s in an open パネル盤 inside the 乗客 door. While you can plug into a 国内の socket, there's a 7kW charger only yards from the 前線 door, so I 交換(する) the 従来の three-pin plug for the type 2 connecter also 供給(する)d with the 乗り物.?
The car park is 解放する/自由な for three hours, so I plug in for 2 hours and 38 minutes. It 追加するs 4.6kW to the 殴打/砲列 at a cost of £1.33. The 範囲 ticks up to 43 miles, which should be enough for another two hours of 運動ing.
WEDNESDAY: Taking the Ami to preview its 運命/宿命
Some might say I didn't need much if an excuse to give the Ami a glimpse of its 結局の 再生利用するd 運命/宿命. It's certainly not the biggest 負担 to take to a waste 処分 場所/位置. Citroen has saved money by 供給するing no 調整 in the 乗客 seat - these flattened cardboard boxes show just how much 脚 room a second occupant will have
Almost every other 乗り物 on the road dwarfs the Citroen. This 範囲 Rover is a perfect comparison of the difference in dimension
'No metal or 電気のs': The Ami has 生き残るd this visit to the 再生利用するing centre...
Almost every new car that enters the market today is '維持できる'. 製造業者s are 落ちるing over themselves to tell you how much of their expensive machines ca n be lobbed in a 再生利用するing 貯蔵所, and the Ami is no different.?
Citroen says that every part is '100 per cent recyclable', apart from the 殴打/砲列 - and that's (人命などを)奪う,主張するd to be 85 per cent recyclable.??So it only seems fitting that I take my micro machine to see where it will 結局 結局最後にはーなる with a trip to the 再生利用するing centre.
As is the 事例/患者 in most 世帯s in 中央の-November, an 早期に spree of online Christmas shopping has resulted in an 豊富 of cardboard, 現在のing the perfect excuse to 負担 the Ami.
In truth, we don't have much to 輸送(する), but the 地元の waste 処分 場所/位置 has an attractive feature for this 実験(する)'s 目的s - an 接近 ramp with a 法外な incline. Packing a paltry 8bhp, it might be the Ami's nemesis, I think.
It isn't.?
With barely any run-up, I 規模 the slope, flattened boxes and all, without a blip. I shouldn't have 疑問d it.
The 外見 of the pocket car の中で the SUVs, 広い地所s and 先頭s used to 配置する/処分する/したい気持ちにさせる of heaps of junk quickly attracts a (人が)群がる. I lose count of conversations with folks cradling knackered microwaves and tree trimmings.
As far as ice breakers go, this is the best there is on four wheels.
THURSDAY: The Ami's final workout?
Colder 気温s and need to use heating features 明確に has an 衝撃 on the 範囲. While this is the 事例/患者 for all electric cars - which are proven to be いっそう少なく efficient when the degrees 減少(する) - it is more of a 目だつ 頭痛 when you have a 最大限 of only 46 miles to play with. The final 旅行 to the gym (pictured) and 支援する is 1.8 miles, but uses 4 miles of 範囲
It's almost time to say 'au revoir' to the Ami, but not before one final jaunt to the gym, which is just 1.8 miles way.
I usually 延期する my infrequent workouts until late to 避ける the 早期に-evening 急ぐ, and this means the 気温 is やめる a bit lower than the Ami has 耐えるd so far in the week.
The cooler 9 degrees means the Ami's heater is needed both ways, glugging away at the 殴打/砲列's reserves.
The 審査する demister also gets put to work and is a necessity for the return trip to 妨げる all the 地位,任命する-treadmill panting from 霧がかかったing frontward visibility.
In total, it costs me 4 miles in 範囲. That's around 55 per cent 負かす/撃墜する on the 約束d efficiency. Ouch! It's pretty (疑いを)晴らす that wintery 条件s wouldn't do the Citroen many favours.?
And it's 価値(がある) 公式文書,認めるing that the heating 機能(する)/行事s 連合させるd make a colossal ゆすり - の近くに your 注目する,もくろむs and you could mistake the loud clatter for 存在 inside an アマゾン 選ぶing factory, not a car that's small enough to be 配達するd through your letterbox.
Refinement certainly isn't the Ami's forte.?
VERDICT: Can you live with a Citroen Ami?
Many people will scoff at the Ami's paltry 46-mile 範囲. But this is a car designed only for short 旅行s, so you're ありそうもない to ever get caught short
While 範囲 isn't our 問題/発行する, the 最高の,を越す 速度(を上げる) of 28mph is. 運動ing it on a road with a 速度(を上げる) 限界 of 40mph or more will make you a 執拗な 苦痛 for other 運転者s
My week-long 実験(する) is proof that it is possible to live with the Citroen Ami within its own parameters - though it won't always be comfortable or practical.
Plenty of people scoff at the p altry 殴打/砲列 範囲, but, for me anyway, that's not a problem. This isn't a car you buy 推定する/予想するing to trot up and 負かす/撃墜する the country - it's a daily driver for those mundane, short-distance chores, and for this 推論する/理由 you're ありそうもない to be travelling far enough to be caught short and the 殴打/砲列 run flat.
That said, our 実験(する) 設立する it is not as electricity-efficient as Citroen says. We covered a total of 24.8 記録,記録的な/記録する miles in the week, and that took an 示すd 37 miles off the 殴打/砲列 範囲, which is 49 per cent lower than (人命などを)奪う,主張するd.
But while 範囲 isn't a 抱擁する 問題/発行する, the 28mph 最高の,を越す 速度(を上げる) is. It?最終的に 制限するs you to 居住の and 都市の streets only, unless you want to be a 苦痛 in the backside for other drivers on 40mph-加える roads - and give yourself a fright の中で the much faster-moving traffic.
Yet it's the £7,695 asking price that is the major 障害 here. It's a lot of money for so many 制限s. When the Ami was 初めは touted for the UK market, we thought it would arrive for just under £5,000, which would have made it a far more 控訴,上告ing prospect.
For around £8,000 you could get a second-手渡す city car with an efficient three-cylinder 石油 engine, like a three-year-old Skoda CitoGo or Seat Mii with around 30,000 miles on the clock, five seats, a boot, and all the 必須の safety features that will save your life in a shunt.
That said, if going green is 最高の,を越す of your 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) for a runaround, the Ami could still be an attractive 提案.
In our seven-day 実験(する) it cost だいたい 4p a mile. That's really impressive, and could be far cheaper if you 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 at home and have a 競争の激しい energy 関税 [not likely at the moment, I know]. In comparison, a 石油 city car 配達するs だいたい 60mpg, which, at 現在の 燃料 prices (161.90p-a-litre on 23 November) 作品 out at around 12p per mile - three times as much as the electric Citroen.
If nothing else, the Ami's biggest USP is that it will give you 直面する-ache from 執拗な smiles. ーに関して/ーの点でs of joy factor, it's ten-out-of-ten モーターing.
Another of the Ami's problems is the £7,695 asking price, which is a major 障害. That's a of money for so many 制限s
If nothing else, the Ami 配達するs on the fun 規模. While it might not be up to 存在 a practical daily モーター, it will 生成する lots of smiles along the way
