For years, Folkestone in Kent 証明するd the perfect 退職 目的地 for 地元の 建設業者 Patrick Murphy.

With its 静かな way of life, tight-knit community and affordable living costs, it is 平易な to see why the seaside 訴える手段/行楽地 is a favourite の中で retirees and why Patrick considered it the ideal place to finally put his feet up.

Pensioners (不足などを)補う a 4半期/4分の1 of the 全住民. But a 最近の influx of younger families, professionals and 所有物/資産/財産 投資家s is changing the pace.?

While the new 居住(者)s have brought regeneration, a vibrant community and 列s of new 商売/仕事s to Folkestone, Patrick, 65, is の中で the pensioners who 恐れる 存在 left out or left behind.

‘Older 居住(者)s like me are feeling ますます marginalised and not 手配中の,お尋ね者,’ he says. ‘It is not just 所有物/資産/財産 prices 押し進めるing us out ― but shops and restaurants, too.’

He points to the restaurant Rocksalt that sits opposite where he is sitting in the 日光, where a 瓶/封じ込める of シャンペン酒 is £109.50 and a dozen oysters £54.

We are standing on the end of a newly landscaped walkway known as Harbour Arm. This was 初めは a 鉄道 終点 and the 出発 point for many 兵士s on their way to fight in the ざん壕s in World War I.?

Abandoned until a 10年間 ago it has been ‘reimagined’ to 含む a swish cocktail 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業 at the lighthouse, seafood restaurants and a host of live music events at 週末s.

When Patrick moved to Folkestone from London ten years ago with his 退職 in sight, he was able to buy a four-bedroom home for £130,000. ‘Now Folkestone is so popular it would cost over three times that ― there is no way I could afford to do it now,’ he says.

But new 傾向s in working and living patterns mean that is changing in 沿岸の areas. Folkestone is just one example, but 類似の stories are playing out in 沿岸の towns up and 負かす/撃墜する the country.

He says: ‘We are 支払う/賃金ing £900 a month for a two-bedroom flat ― in London you could not get a shoebox for that. We have been amazed by the welcoming sense of community in this town ― and love of the arts.’

‘An influx of people may raise prices and make 所有物/資産/財産s more expensive, but there is plenty of space for everyone 予定 to new 開発s.’

However, some older 居住(者)s 恐れる that expensive new 住宅 and 開発s remain 堅固に out of their reach ― and only serve to 押し進める up house prices and living costs in the area.

地区 議員 John Wing is taking a きびきびした morning stroll on the promenade. The path is part of a new gentrification of the area that 含むs palm trees and deckchairs on the beach. He welcomes 改良s but 恐れるs it could mask a 住宅 危機.

The retired 鉄道 労働者 says: ‘When the sun is 向こうずねing it is lovely out here ― but the reality is that Folkestone is one of the most 奪うd areas in the country. 年輩の people can 特に struggle to find affordable accommodation.

‘If you complain, landlords can kick you out. And a 所有物/資産/財産 にわか景気 means pensioners on 直す/買収する,八百長をするd incomes get 定価つきの out.

‘Folkestone is not a holiday 訴える手段/行楽地 but a home to real people who should be looked after and not be 孤立するd.’

Looking west along th e shoreline we can see Shoreline 三日月, a 巨大(な) 固める/コンクリート 封鎖する of 84 homes to be opened this summer ― 愛称d ‘Tinnitus Towers’ 予定 to the ear-splitting banshee-like wail the building can 放出する when the 勝利,勝つd blows.

The 所有物/資産/財産s come at a hefty £430,000 for a one-bedroom flat ― or £2.1 million for a penthouse ― out of reach for most older 居住(者)s on a 年金 income.

When 億万長者 Sir Roger De Haan sold Saga, the company started by his father Sir Sidney De Haan in Folkestone in 1951, for £1.3 billlion a 10年間 ago, he decided to 投資する some of the windfall in 地元の 開発s.?

Shoreline 三日月 is just the start. He has 計画(する)s for a total of 1,000 高級な homes by the seafront, 含むing a 12-storey コンビナート/複合体 dubbed ‘something out of the Flintstones’ by 居住(者)s.

In re cent years a ‘creative 4半期/4分の1’ with trendy coffee shops and boutique art galleries by the seafront has opened up in Folkestone ― but just yards behind this area is a 奪うd 地域 around Dover Road.?

‘I am kept awake by police サイレン/魅惑的なs as they chase 青年s 原因(となる)ing a nuisance or getting into fights after a night out in the town enjoying the new 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業s.’

支援する on the harbour, I 会合,会う Peter Jones, 82, and wife ジーンズ, 77, who 恐れる retirees now will not be able to make the move to Folkestone for a pleasant 退職 such as they now enjoy.

They discovered the 控訴,上告 of the area a 10年間 ago, retiring from careers in Brussels, where they worked for the European (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限 and European 会議 それぞれ. The home of the Channel Tunnel 終点 was a natural stop-off for them.

‘Sadly, if we were retiring now we might not be able to afford it. This is creating a serious problem ― and 高級な 開発s are certainly not the 解答 but will only make it worse.’

However, while some things are changing, in other ways Folkestone is adapting to cater for old timers and newcomers alike.

Peter and ジーンズ are walking 負かす/撃墜する to (頭が)ひょいと動く’s Seafood 先頭 on the harbour from their nearby home, just minutes away from the Rocksalt restaurant with its oysters and シャンペン酒.

‘We’re walking 負かす/撃墜する for a £5 捕らえる、獲得する of jellied eels,’ says Peter. ‘Delicious.’
