He received notification 'out of the blue' in 2016 that he was »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ë to a US ÈȺá¤Î Ä´ºº.

The ¤Ë°ú¤Â³¤¤¤Æ year he was Àµ¼°¤Ë µ¯Áʤ¹¤ëd, Ͷȯ¤¹¤ë¡¿°ú¤µ¯¤³¤¹ing 'Ĺ°ú¤¤¤¿ ¹ñ³°Æ¨Ë´ÈȿͤΰúÅϤ· Áʾ١¿¿Ê¹Ôs', with the »ÈÍÑ¡¿Å¬ÍÑ ºÇ½ªÅª¤Ë ¼Âह¤ëd, on ¹µÁÊ¡¤¾å¹ð, by a British ºÛȽ´± ͽÄê to his °åÎŤΠcircumstances and family background.

The »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô was then ¼êÅϤ¹d to West Midlands Police to Ä´ºº¡¿Áܺº¤¹¤ë and Walker-McDaid made ½½Ê¬¤Ê admissions when interviewed in September 2021.

He said he had been 'haunted' by what happened to Mr Dobbs and said he hadn't considered the consequences of his call. The Ë¡ÄºÛȽ½ê heard Walker-McDaid said he 'felt like he had been in a ¥Ó¥Ç¥ª game'.

The Ë¡ÄºÛȽ½ê was told there was no ¾Úµò that Mr Dobbs, from Ellicott City, Maryland, had sold ËãÌôs to anyone.

Áʾ١¿¿Ê¹Ôs then Ω¤Á±ýÀ¸¤µ¤»¤ëd again ͽÄê to ±ä´ü¤¹¤ës ¸¶°ø¡Ê¤È¤Ê¤ë¡Ëd in ÆÀ¤ëing ¾Úµò from US Åö¶É and an ½é´ü¤Î ·èÄ꡿ȽÄ꾡¤Á¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë by the West Midlands ·³Ââ to ¤ò¼è¤ê°ú¤¤¹¤ë the Èï¹ð by way of a ·Ù¹ð¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ë, which was ¡Ä¤ËÈ¿ÂФ¹¤ëd by the ±É´§¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ë µ¯ÁÊ Service.

Walker-McDaid, who the Ë¡ÄºÛȽ½ê heard now has a ½½Ê¬¤Ê-time ¿¦¶È »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing ¡ò36,000-a-year, pleaded Íºá¤Î to perverting the course of »ÊË¡¡Ê´±¡Ë in January and returned to Ë¡ÄºÛȽ½ê for Àë¹ð¡¤È½·èing this morning.

David Williams, defending, said the »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô was one of 'serious criminality' and ʪ±¢¡¿É÷²¼ had been 'on the ÍÆÇ¤Ê fringes of the online gaming community', but said the Èï¹ð's ²ùº¨, neurodivergence, family history and Áá´ü¤Ë Íºá¤Î ò´ê were all factors which could µö¤¹ for a °ì»þÄä»ß¤¹¤ëd Àë¹ð¡¤È½·è.

ºÛȽ´± Anthony Potter agreed, ¼êÅϤ¹ing the Èï¹ð a 20-month Àë¹ð¡¤È½·è, °ì»þÄä»ß¤¹¤ëd for 18 months. Walker-McDaid was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of ̤ʧ¤¤¤Î work in the community, ´°Á´¤Ë¤¹¤ë a ten-hour rehabilitation ɬÍ×ʪ¡¿É¬Í×¾ò·ï and »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â Mr Dobbs ¡ ò1,000 in Êä½þ¡Ê¶â¡Ë.

The Ë¡ÄºÛȽ½ê heard that although Walker-McDaid had first come into ÀÜ¿¨¤¹¤ë with ʪ±¢¡¿É÷²¼ online in 2012 when he was 16, but had never been to America.

He had no Á°²Ês.

¤Ë°ú¤Â³¤¤¤Æ the ½ÐÍè»ö/»ö·ï, Mr Dobbs criticised police for their ÊÖÅú and asked why they did not check the authenticity of the call before »ö¼Â¾å¤Î¡¿ÂåÍý.

Officers ÊóÆ»¤Ë¤è¤ì¤Ð ignored his father, Tom, and his cousin telling them there was no ¿Í¼Á ¾õ¶·¡¿¾ðÀª and that the ¤¤¤ï¤æ¤ë ¿Í¼Á taker was ¸½¼Â¤Ë asleep.

In an interview with a US news channel?, Mr Dodds said: 'How did y'all not trace this call »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë? How did y'all not ¿Íʪ¡¿»Ñ¡¿¿ô»ú out where it ¡Êµ¡¤Î¡Ë¥«¥à from?'

While swatting is not an offence under UK ˡΧ, Hannah Sidaway, Specialist ¸¡»¡´±¡¤¸¡»ö for CPS West Midlands, said the craze was 'no joke', Äɲ乤ëing: 'It is a serious ºá¡¤ÈȺá that can have life-changing consequences ? as this µ¾À·¼Ô's terrible ½ý³²s ÌÀ³Î¤Ë show.
