TOM BOWER: The dam of silence on Meghan's '¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëing' at the Palace has finally broken. This trickle will soon become a stream

The Duchess of Sussex¡Çs ¾åµé¤Î ²¦¼¼¤Î ¸ø¼°¤Î¡¿Ìò¿Í, Samantha Cohen, has finally broken cover on the ÇúȯÀ¤Î ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëing ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ës that first ·ã¤·¤¯Íɤ¹¤ëd Kensington Palace in 2021 and still reverberate today.

Ms Cohen, a loyal and Ĺǯ¤Î former palace Ê亴´±, has ³Îǧ¤¹¤ëd to an Australian newspaper that she was, indeed, ¤ÎÃæ¤Ç those interviewed by the Palace in the wake of ¡Ê̱»ö¤Î¡Ë¹ðÁÊs about the duchess¡Çs ¿½¤·Î©¤Æ¤é¤ì¤¿¡¿µ¿¤ï¤·¤¤ ÀѶËŪ¤Ê behaviour.

A small step º£¸å, you might think, but a ½ÅÍ×¤Ê one when it comes to an episode which ¸ø¼°¤Î¡¿Ìò¿Ís have so far swept under the carpet.

Samantha Cohen is not just any courtier, after all.

An intelligent, charming Australian, she had been working with the late Queen for 20 years when she was asked to ÀÁ¤±É餦 a challenging new assignment.

In 2017, Ms Cohen agreed to help the newly engaged Meghan acclimatise to the ²¦¼¼¤Î Family and life in Kensington Palace.

Her »Å»ö was to ÀâÆÀ¤¹¤ë an ambitious, career-minded and outspoken Californian actress to embrace the ²¦¼¼¤Î Family¡Çs immutable ³¬ÁØÀ©ÅÙ and rigid µÄÄê½ñs.

Perhaps it was a tall order. Certainly, I believe that Ms Cohen was soon exasperated, within six months or so, and that Meghan either Ʊ°Õ¤·¤Ê¤¤d with, or failed to understand, the Èó¡¤ÉÔ¡¤Ìµ-negotiable elements of ²¦Â².

I also believe that members of Samantha Cohen¡Çs team ¸«²ò¡Ê¤ò¤È¤ë¡Ëd this as an irresponsible self-indulgence.

Both Ì£Êý¤¹¤ës would ÈóÆñ¤¹¤ë a ¾×ÆÍ¡¿ÉÔ°ìÃ× of cultures.

Could a 36-year-old with a profile ²Ä·è¤¹¤ë¡¦ºÎÂò¤¹¤ë the British propensity for understatement? Could she ¹Â¤Ø¤Ï¤Þ¤é¤»¤ë¡¿ÉÔ»þÃ夹¤ë Hollywood¡Çs hyperbole in favour of the Palace¡Çs low-½ÅÍפÊ, repetitive ¡Æno comment¡Ç?

It seems not.

One year later, after Harry and Meghan¡Çs glorious May wedding in Windsor, Ms Cohen was in a mood to ¼¿¦¤¹¤ë.

She doesn¡Çt go ¤ä¤á¤ë so far in her conversation with the À迨¤ì¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë Sun, but Ms Cohen does say that she stayed in her Ìò³ä three times as long as she had planned ? because ¸ø¼°¤Î¡¿Ìò¿Ís struggled to find a ¸òÂØ¡¿Êä½¼ for her.

And that, intriguingly, when a new »äŪ¤Ê Ĺ´± was ·ë¶É ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë, that person ¤ä¤á¤ë during Harry and Meghan¡Çs ¾®Î¹¹Ô¤¹¤ë of Africa in 2019.

Ms Cohen also ³Îǧ¤¹¤ëd that she was one of a number of courtiers who had been interviewed ¤Ë°ú¤Â³¤¤¤Æ a ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëing ¡Ê̱»ö¤Î¡Ë¹ðÁÊ raised by Harry and Meghan¡Çs communications Ĺ´±, Jason Knauf, in 2018 ? and first ÌÀ¤é¤«¤Ë¤¹¤ë¡¿Ï³¤é¤¹d by The Times in 2020.

It became ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ that three women had Àµ¼°¤Ë told Mr Knauf that Meghan was ¡Æ¶²¤é¤¯¡Ç ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëing them.

And that, as the ¡Ê̱»ö¤Î¡Ë¹ðÁÊs ÃßÀѤ¹¤ëd, Mr Knauf started to put together a ¤È¤¸¹þ¤ß¡¿Äó½Ð¤¹¤ë.

¤Ë¤è¤ì¤Ð ϳ¤ì¤ëd email correspondence, Mr Knauff ¿½¤·Î©¤Æ¤é¤ì¤¿¡¿µ¿¤ï¤·¤¤ to the Palace¡Çs human »ñ¸»s department that Meghan ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëd two PAs ¡Æout of the À¤ÂÓ¡Ç within the space of a year and was Ūing other ½÷À¡Ê¤Î¡Ë staff.

Mr Knauf ¸ø¼°Ê¸½ñ¡¤Ç§¤á¤ëd that one ½Ðȯ¡¿»àing member of staff had said her Áø¶ø¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës with Meghan made her ¡Æfeel sick¡Ç.

¡ÆI can¡Çt stop shaking¡Ç was another comment Æõ¤¹¤ë¡¿°úÍѤ¹¤ëd, and ¡ÆI feel terrified¡Ç.

The correspondence ¼¨º¶¤¹¤ëd that Mr Knauf was ´Ø¿´d about Ms Cohen herself, ¼¨¤¹ing that she was experiencing extreme ¡Æ¶¯Ä´¤¹¤ë¡¿¥¹¥È¥ì¥¹¡Ç.

The Sussexes have vigorously ÈÝÄꤹ¤ëd the ¼çÄ¥s.

When the ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëing ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ës first ¸½¤ì¤ëd, Âåɽ¼Ô¡¿¹ñ²ñµÄ°÷s for Meghan said that she µñÀ䤹¤ëd the ¼çÄ¥s as the 'ºÇ¿·¤Î attack on her character'.

They said it was ÆÃ¤Ë ÉÔ¸øÊ¿¤Ê when the duchess had been the 'Ū of ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëing herself and is ¿¼¤¯¡¤¶¯Îõ¤Ë committed to supporting those who have experienced ¶ìÄË and ³°½ý¡¿¥·¥ç¥Ã¥¯'.

In his best-selling memoir Spare, published in January last year, Harry railed against ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ës, Àâ: ¡ÆIt was so outrageous that even though Meg and I ÏÀ¾Ú¤¹¤ëd their ±³¡Ê¤ò¤Ä¤¯¡Ë with a 25-page Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ to human »ñ¸»s ½½Ê¬¤Ê of ¾Úµò, it was going to be very hard for me to ignore it.¡Ç

The final Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ by the Palace was kept »äŪ¤Ê to Êݸ¤ë those taking part, but there is no µ¿Ìä that there was a growing mood of ´Ø¿´ ? or that the Îó¡¿Á椰¡¿ÁûÆ° was becoming personal.

As I µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë in my Ä´½ñ¤ò¤È¤ë¡¿Í½Ì󤹤ë, Éü½², William told Harry that Meghan¡Çs behaviour was ÍÆǧ¤Ç¤¤Ê¤¤ and that Ms Cohen and others had become ²ø¤·¤²¤Ê that Meghan had never ¡¼¤¹¤ë¤Ä¤â¤ê¤Ç¤¢¤ëd to give up her career and become a loyal member of the family.

Did Meghan want to return to America, William wondered?

As their conversation became heated, William ¤Ë¤Ä¤¤¤Æ¸ÀµÚ¤¹¤ëd staff ¡Ê̱»ö¤Î¡Ë¹ðÁÊs about ¸ºß ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëd by Meghan.

Harry was Íð˽¡¿Ë½ÎϤò²Ã¤¨¤ëd ? but the ¹ðÁÊ¡¤¹ðȯs, whether ÀµÅö²½¤¹¤ëd or not, were a »öÊÁ of fact.

So was a ³Î¤«¤Ê level of staff turnover.

The Sussexes were said not to be disappointed by Ms Toubati¡Çs ½Ðȯ but Ʊ°Õ¤·¤Ê¤¤d about the ¿äÏÀ¤¹¤ë¡¿Íýͳs.

In 2021, Meghan told a À¤³¦Åª¤Ê audience on Oprah that, not only had palace ¸ø¼°¤Î¡¿Ìò¿Ís done little to Êݸ¤ë her, they had gone so far as to conspire against her and Harry.

Such a ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ë will have been ¿¼¤¯¡¤¶¯Îõ¤Ë disappointing to Ms Cohen and other former staff as they believed they had worked tirelessly to help the couple.

It is hugely unfortunate that the ¤¤¤¸¤á¡Ê¤ë¡Ëing ¡Ê̱»ö¤Î¡Ë¹ðÁÊs have resulted in no ·è°Õ¡¿·èµÄ either way.

To date, the palace lawyer¡Çs Ä´ºº remains under lock and ½ÅÍפÊ, a ¾õ¶·¡¿¾ðÀª which is hard on the accusers ? and ÉÔ¸øÊ¿¤Ê to the ¡Ê·º»ö¡ËÈï¹ð.

Jason Knauf¡Çs ϳ¤ì¤ëd email correspondence have given us a starting point, but until a few days ago, Ms Cohen and fellow palace staff had remained silent.

Now, finally, that dam has been °ãÈ¿d ? and I have no µ¿Ìä that more will now ¸½¤ì¤ë.

The trickle of ¡Ê·Ù»¡¤Ê¤É¤Ø¤Î¡ËÌ©¹ð¡¤¹ðÁʡʾõ¡Ë will, soon enough, become a stream.

That¡Çs not to prejudge the »öÊÁ or say what the Ƚ·è will be.

But it¡Çs very much to the Palace¡Çs discredit that, whatever truth we arrive at, it should have to ¸½¤ì¤ë in this painful and unsatisfactory way.
