My wife is giving away our children's ¡ò100,000 Áê³ʪ·ï?to romance scammers... and there's nothing I can do to stop her

For the first 51 years of marriage, Joe Wilkinson and his wife Emily ³ôd everything.?

The couple, now 79 and 83, have worked hard as small ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö owners to afford a comfortable life in the Midlands for their family.?

And, over time, they have built a generous Áê³ʪ·ï ¡Ê¡¼¤Î¤¿¤á¤Ë¡Ë¤È¤Ã¤Æ¤ª¤¯d for their children and grandchildren.

But their carefully laid ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës began to Êø²õ¤¹¤ë in 2017. Joe discovered his wife had struck up a secret ´Ø·¸ with a man she met on Facebook ¡½ and was ¼êÅϤ¹ing over large sums of money.?

Since then, he says Emily has been ͶÏǤ¹¤ëd into a string of online ´Ø·¸s.

Joe, who asked for his »Ø̾¤¹¤ë to be changed, ¸«Àѡʤë¡Ës his wife has now sent these ¡Æmen¡Ç ¡ò100,000 ¡½ by ¡Ê·Ù»¡¤Î¡Ë¼êÆþ¤ì¡¤µÞ½±ing their ¶¦Æ±¤Î Ãù¶â accounts, taking ou t ÂßÉÕ¶âs and even selling their Mercedes and pawning her jewellery. Yet she has never met any of them in person.

And ¤Ë¤â¤«¤«¤ï¤é¤º Joe and their children¡Çs best À®²Ì¡¿ÅØÎÏs, he says nothing can ǼÆÀ¤µ¤»¤ë Emily she is the µ¾À·¼Ô of romance º¾µ½ ¡½ and she¡Çs still giving away money.?

Heartbroken, but ½¼¤Æ¤ëd, Joe ¼Âह¤ës to give up and approached Money Mail in a desperate »î¤ß¤ë¡¿´ë¤Æ¤ë to expose the scammers.

Scammers typically »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë up µ¶¤Î profiles on social ¥Þ¥¹¥³¥ß to message their µ¾À·¼Ôs and entice them into a ´Ø·¸.?

They begin messaging on Facebook, Instagram or on an online dating ¾ì½ê¡¿°ÌÃÖ, but will try to get them to start speaking on a more »äŪ¤Ê ÃÅ¡¦¹ËÎΡ¦¸øÌó such as WhatsApp or text.

Once ¿®ÍÑ has been ÀßΩ¤¹¤ëd, the ÈȺá¤Î will usually ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ë to be experiencing a problem, such as an ÌäÂ꡿ȯ¹Ô¤¹¤ë with a ¥Ó¥¶, health problems or ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë tickets and ask for money to help. They may also ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ë to be doing charity or overseas work.

In Emily¡Çs »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô, Joe says the scammers have Ä󵯤¹¤ë¡¿¥Ý¡¼¥º¤ò¤È¤ëd as American ʼ»Îs who have been ÃÏ°Ì¡¤Ç¤Ì¿¤¹¤ëd abroad and are looking for love.

The trouble started when Emily received a tablet as a gift in 2017, so she could stay up to date with the news. Soon after, she created a Facebook account and then the romance scams started, says Joe.

Tactics:?Scammers typically set up fake profiles on social media to message their victims and entice them into a relationship

¡ÆShe received messages from young Army men who were Àâ nice things to her. Ever since, she has taken the tablet everywhere and is messaging them on Facebook or WhatsApp,¡Ç he says.

When Joe noticed that money was ¸ºß transferred out of their ¶¦Æ±¤Î accounts, he became ²ø¤·¤²¤Ê. He and their children had the passcode for the tablet so were able to read the messages.?

This is how they discovered Emily was caught up in a string of romantic ´Ø·¸s with people who were ÌÀ³Î¤Ë scammers, he says.

The most ÌܤÀ¤Ä used a ·³¤Î persona and ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ëd to be ÃÏ°Ì¡¤Ç¤Ì¿¤¹¤ëd on a faraway base, ¤Ë¤è¤ì¤Ð Joe.?

The young men sent Emily pictures of themselves in uniform and, after days of talking, would ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ë to need money.

This is one of the most popular cover stories ¤ÎÃæ¤Ç romance scammers, who also often Ä󵯤¹¤ë¡¿¥Ý¡¼¥º¤ò¤È¤ë as overseas doctors, successful businessmen and famous people.?

They will then come up with a ¿äÏÀ¤¹¤ë¡¿Íýͳ for asking for money ¡½ for example, they may ¡Ê¿ÍÌ¿¤Ê¤É¤ò¡ËÃ¥¤¦¡¤¼çÄ¥¤¹¤ë their child needs ¶ÛµÞ¤Î °åÎŤΠcare that they can¡Çt »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â for, or that they need money to buy a flight to visit the UK.

¡ÆShe seems to think they are coming to take her away to a better life,¡Ç says Joe. ¡ÆIt has been so difficult to watch and you wonder why she is doing this. She keeps it all secret, but you know it¡Çs going on.¡Ç

On one occasion, Joe says he ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë out that Emily had arranged for a friend to give her a ²ò½ü¤¹¤ë to the Ãϸµ¤Î airport, where she planned to ²ñ¹ç¡¤²ñ¤¦ one of her lovers. However, the scammer never showed up.

Joe says he has tried to ľÌ̤¹¤ë her on several occasions, but has never been able to break the ¡Ê°ìÄê¤Î¡Ë´ü´Ö.?

¡ÆWe did ÀäÂÐ everything to ǼÆÀ¤µ¤»¤ë her that these were scams, telling her the people were not real, but all to no avail. She just doesn¡Çt seem to see it, and she carries on in her own ´Å¤¤ way.¡Ç

Anna Îó¡¿Á椰¡¿ÁûÆ°, ÁÏΩ¼Ô of romance scam ¡ÊÁªµó¤Ê¤É¤Î¡Ë±¿Æ°¤ò¤¹¤ë group LoveSaid and ¶µ°é¤Î website Catch The Catfish, says it¡Çs important for friends and family to understand the ·ã¤·¤¤ ¹ª¤ß¤ÊÁàºî that µ¾À·¼Ôs have been through.

¡ÆThere is a very ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ pattern of ¹ª¤ß¤ÊÁàºî that every µ¾À·¼Ô goes through: there is a grooming ²áÄø and then a period of what we call ¡Èlove ÇúÇË¡É follows.¡Ç

Ms Îó¡¿Á椰¡¿ÁûÆ°, who was herself the µ¾À·¼Ô of a romance scam, says: ¡ÆThey begin by finding out about you and À½¿Þ¡¿ÃêÁª out ¡Ê·Ù»¡¤Ê¤É¤Ø¤Î¡ËÌ©¹ð¡¤¹ðÁʡʾõ¡Ë they can use later on.

¡ÆIn my »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô, he ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ðd up things that had happened in his past and what had gone wrong in ´Ø·¸s to make me feel comfortable doing the same.?

'That enabled him to groom me ¤½¤Î¾å¤Î and °ÂÁ´¤Ê¡¦Êݾڤ¹¤ë his standing as he pretended to be everything I was looking for.¡Ç

Then comes the love ÇúÇË, which is where they make sure they are in your thoughts À䤨¤º and telling you how special you are, Ms Îó¡¿Á椰¡¿ÁûÆ° says.?

¡ÆIt¡Çs not unusual for them to be possessive, asking where you are and what you are doing to make you feel they care and want to be with you.¡Ç

Joe watched this pattern ¹¤²¤ë in his wife¡Çs social ¥Þ¥¹¥³¥ß inboxes, followed by relentless requests for cash.?

¡ÆThey started by asking her to make bank °Üžs and then moved on to getting her to send the money by depositing into a Bitcoin account. Now they ask for giftcards,¡Ç he says.

At first, Joe says he was able to see when Emily planned to send money and ·Ù¹ð¤¹¤ë her bank ahead of time so they could be Éõº¿¤¹¤ëd. However, her bank failed to do this and the money continued to go through to foreign bank accounts.

¡ÆMy children and I tried to stop it. We spoke to lawyers, doctors ¡½ to ººÄꤹ¤ë¡¿¡ÊÀǶâ¤Ê¤É¤ò¡Ë²Ý¤¹ her mental soundness ¡½ we went to her bank, Facebook to Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ the µ¶¤Î profiles, the police, ³èÆ°¡¿ÀïÆ® º¾µ½ . . . you »Ø̾¤¹¤ë it we tried. No one helped.

¡ÆThe bank always ¡Êµ¡¤Î¡Ë¥«¥à »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë with: ¡ÈIf your wife is of sound mind, and it is her money, then she can do as she likes.¡É ¡Ç

In the ¹ç´Ö, Emily was selling off Åê»ñs and taking out bank ÂßÉÕ¶âs. ¡ÆThe bank even µö¤¹d my wife to take out ÂßÉÕ¶âs at the age of 79, when Emily¡Çs total income was just her ·îËè¤Î ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â of ¡ò800. How on earth has someone with little income been given ¡ò5,000 ÂßÉÕ¶âs? I thought the banks had not Êݸ¤ëd her and decided to fight »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë.¡Ç

Joe ÀÜ¿¨¤¹¤ëd the Banking Ombudsman and, 18 months later, was told to Îá¾õ to his bank with ¾Úµò that Emily had made the »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës to scammers, ¤Ë¤â¤«¤«¤ï¤é¤º his ·Ù¹ðs.

¡ÆBingo,¡Ç he says. ¡ÆThey agreed that they had not dealt with my ¡Ê̱»ö¤Î¡Ë¹ðÁÊs ŬÀÚ¤Ë and to refund some ¡ò40,000 dating »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë to 2017, which was a large part of the ¡ò60,000 we ³µ»»¤Î to have changed ¼êÅϤ¹s at that point.¡Ç

However, the ¡ò40,000 was sent ľÀÜ¡¿¤Þ¤Ã¤¹¤°¤Ë to Emily¡Çs bank account and, ¤Ë¤â¤«¤«¤ï¤é¤º a discussion with her about the ´í¸± of scammers, the 83-year-old has continued to send money to her µ¶¤Î online lovers.

Money Mail has seen screenshots of the messages between Emily and the scammers ÆÀ¤ëd by her husband, ƱÍÍ¤Ë as his correspondence with the ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î Ombudsman Service and bank À¼ÌÀs showing »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës that Emily has made to foreign bank accounts.?

¡ÆI µ¿Ìä very much that she has any of it left. The scammers know she is a soft-touch, a ¹¶·â¤ò¼õ¤±¤ä¤¹¤¤ person,¡Ç Joe says.

¡ÆMy wife has learnt nothing. She is still giving cash to scammers, which is now ¸ºß done ·Ðͳ¤Ç gift cards from what I can gather.¡Ç

The ¼Â¶È²È says he has taken ¹çˡŪ¤Ê advice and they have rewritten their wills, putting »ñ»ºs, such as ½êͭʪ¡¿»ñ»º¡¿ºâ»º, into a ¿®ÍÑ to Êݸî¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿¶ÛµÞÍ¢ÆþÀ©¸Â them from Emily.

¡ÆI have a small ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö, we have a house and I have a ǯ¶â of around ¡ò240,000, so there are ¤ä¤á¤ë a lot of ´ð¶âs to worry about.¡Ç

Last year, ¸¦µæ by Santander ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë that almost one in three people have been Ūd by a romance scammer.?

People Ϸǯ¤Î 55 to 64 are the most likely to be tricked by fraudsters Ä󵯤¹¤ë¡¿¥Ý¡¼¥º¤ò¤È¤ëing as love Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£s, but those Ϸǯ¤Î 65 to 74 were scammed out of the most money of all age groups, data from Lloyds ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë.

Men are more likely to Íî¤Á¤ë for a romance scam, but only marginally, at 52 pc of »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ôs. However, women typically ¼êÅϤ¹d over more money ¡½ losing an ÉáÄ̤Ρ¿Ê¿¶Ñ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of ¡ò9,083 compared to men¡Çs ¡ò5,145 ÉáÄ̤Ρ¿Ê¿¶Ñ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë loss.?

Money Mail¡Çs Stop The Social ¥Þ¥¹¥³¥ß Scammers ¡ÊÁªµó¤Ê¤É¤Î¡Ë±¿Æ°¤ò¤¹¤ë has called on tech companies to Êݸ¤ë »ÈÍѼÔs from fraudsters.

Ms Îó¡¿Á椰¡¿ÁûÆ° says she speaks to 65 to 100 µ¾À·¼Ôs a week, and they ÈÏ°Ï from a 16-year-old, who has been ¤æ¤¹¤ê¡¤¶²³åd over explicit photos after entering a µ¶¤Î ´Ø·¸, to 80-year-old married women.

¡ÆYou should never tell a loved one or friend who is a µ¾À·¼Ô that they are wrong, or call them stupid, naive or gullible.

¡ÆIt¡ Çs far more ¥³¥ó¥Ó¥Ê¡¼¥È¡¿Ê£¹çÂÎ than that, and they will have been through a ÊúÍʤ¹¤ë ¹ª¤ß¤ÊÁàºî, a form of brainwashing.

¡ÆIt¡Çs so delicate and people have to start understanding it themselves before anything can change. All you can do is ¹©¾ì¡¿¿¢Êª the seeds of µ¿Ìä and they may start to unpick the reality that has been built around them,¡Ç she says.

As for Joe, he says: ¡ÆIt¡Çs upsetting watching your money ¸ºß given away by someone you love. I don¡Çt see what we can do to stop it.¡Ç
