Over half of homes want HYDROGEN 力/強力にする: How does it work and will it make 法案s cheaper?

  • Most Britons like gas boilers and so are tempted by 代案/選択肢 hydrogen 力/強力にする?
  • In theory, hydrogen can 力/強力にする gas boilers and 器具s the same way as gas
  • So if 消費者s want hydrogen, why are they asked to fit heat pumps instead??

If they 手配中の,お尋ね者 to be more green, more than half of 世帯s would rather switch to hydrogen 力/強力にする than get a heat pump, a 最近の 調査する 設立する.??

But how does hydrogen heating work, when is it coming and what does it mean for energy 法案s?

The UK is going through a sea change in how it heats homes and 力/強力にするs gas 器具s. This is 予定 to the 政府's 逮捕する 無 (選挙などの)運動をする, which 目的(とする)s to 限界 温室 gas 放出/発行s.

A big part of this (選挙などの)運動をする is 取って代わるing the use of natural gas, which is 麻薬を吸うd into more than 80 per cent of UK homes.

Ring the changes: The nation loves gas boilers, but could change be on the horizon that still allows households to keep a system they are familiar with?

(犯罪の)一味 the changes: The nation loves gas boilers, but could change be on the horizon that still 許すs 世帯s to keep a system they are familiar with?

The main 代案/選択肢 to gas boilers is the heat pump, which uses electricity to 除去する energy from the 環境 and 変える it into h eat.

But the 政府's programme to get UK 世帯s to fit heat pumps is going slower than 推定する/予想するd, with just 55,000 任命する/導入するd in 2023.

Just one in 10 people either have a heat pump or want one, によれば a YouGov 調査する (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限d by the Energy and 公共事業(料金)/有用性s 同盟 貿易(する) 団体/死体.

But more than half (51 per cent) of said they would support blending natural gas with hydrogen to 削減(する) 炭素 放出/発行s from home heating. Hydrogen can be 燃やすd in much the same way as natural gas.

一方/合間, two-thirds (66 per cent) of people want their 現在の gas boilers to be 変えるd for use with a 無-炭素 gas, such as hydrogen, in the 未来.

So with all the 消費者 需要・要求する for hydrogen 力/強力にする, how likely is it and how does the system work?

What does hydrogen mean for central heating?

Hydrogen can be used to heat homes and 力/強力にする 存在するing gas 器具s, such as cookers and hobs, unlike heat pumps which only 供給する heat.?

取って代わるing natural gas with hydrogen has several advantages - but disadvantages too.

燃やすing hydrogen does not create harmful 放出/発行s, unlike natural gas which 解放(する)s 炭酸ガス.

世帯s should not need to make any 調整s to their boilers, メーターs or 麻薬を吸うs if hydrogen of up to 20 per cent is mixed with natural gas.

Easy fix: Small levels of hydrogen can be mixed into the gas supply without any boiler changes

平易な 直す/買収する,八百長をする: Small levels of hydrogen can be mixed into the gas 供給(する) without any boiler changes

A 報告(する)/憶測 by HyDeploy 設立する that メーターs were not 影響する/感情d by introducing one-fifth hydrogen to the gas 供給(する).

In fact, all gas 器具s made since 1996 are 実験(する)d on a blend of 23 per cent hydrogen before they can be sold in the UK, du e to the Gas 器具 指示的な.

So a small 量 of hydrogen in the gas system would enable homes to keep their gas boilers and cookers, with most needing no alterations.

At the moment all gas boilers and cookers can 安全に 燃やす a small 量 of hydrogen anyway, but this is 限られた/立憲的な to 0.1 per cent under gas safety 法律s.

Hydrogen levels above 20 per cent will begin to 要求する modifications to homes, such as changes to 麻薬を吸うs, cookers, boilers and メーターs.

Why don't we have hydrogen heating already?

The 科学(工学)技術 is still young and the 政府 wants to make sure any hydrogen rollout is done 安全に with as few 行き詰まり,妨げるs as possible.

The 政府 was 協議するing on 計画(する)s to start putting hydrogen into gas 供給(する)s from 2025, but has now 延期するd this until at least 2026. Heat pumps will be its 焦点(を合わせる) instead.

Energy efficiency 大臣 ツバメ Callanan said: 'Heat pumps and heat 網状組織s will be the main 大勝する to cutting 世帯 放出/発行s for the foreseeable 未来.'

Is hydrogen heating and cooking more expensive?

Hydrogen is the most ありふれた element in the world - and in fact in the known universe - so it is in theory 自由に 利用できる.

But 抽出するing hydrogen and 麻薬を吸うing it into UK homes is a 高くつく/犠牲の大きい and often difficult practice.?

A major drawback is that the cost of a hydrogen rollout could be more expensive than just 任命する/導入するing heat pumps.

A s tudy by energy 専門家s at Cornwall Insight 設立する that hydrogen would be almost twice as expensive for heating a home compared to carrying on using natural gas.

There are also some safety 問題/発行するs with hydrogen. The gas is いっそう少なく 安全な than natural gas - though neither is perfectly 安全な.?

Hydro power: Hydrogen may be rolled out on roads and to businesses before it reaches homes

Hydro 力/強力にする: Hydrogen may be rolled out on roads and to 商売/仕事s before it reaches homes

Hydrogen is more 爆発性の and more 傾向がある to 漏れるing, as it is a smaller 分子 than natural gas so can find its way through smaller 割れ目s.

A 政府 協議 said that older gas メーターs may also not be able to 扱う the higher 容積/容量s of gas 原因(となる)d by mixing hydrogen with natural gas, and may need 取って代わるing.

Some parts of the country are 現在/一般に unable to get any hydrogen anyway, because the gas mains in their area are made of old アイロンをかける, which becomes brittle when in 接触する with hydrogen.

These old アイロンをかける mains are 存在 取って代わるd by 2030.

What would hydrogen 力/強力にする mean for energy 法案s?

This would depend on how much hydrogen is introduced and how that is done.

The 見込み is that energy 法案s would rise if hydrogen is introduced to the gas 供給(する).

世帯 gas 法案s could rise by 11.2 per cent if 20 per cent hydrogen is mixed in, によれば a 2022 報告(する)/憶測 by German 学校/設ける Fraunhofer.

However, this 11.2 per cent rise was criticised by energy 裁判,公判 HyDeploy, which said a rise of 6 per cent was more likely in the UK.

But other costs could also 攻撃する,衝突する homes if hydrogen is introduced.

There could be a cost to 世帯s if the gas system in their own home cannot 扱う hydrogen, and this needs to be stripped out before the natural gas can be 燃やすd.

The 政府 協議 on the 問題/発行する said: 'For example, there may be costs associated with deblending if 使用者s cannot use blended 容積/容量s of gas and need to de-blend hydrogen at the point of use.'

A hydrogen/natural gas blend will 増加する the 量 of 全体にわたる gas 存在 used by 世帯s, because hydrogen 供給するs いっそう少なく energy per 容積/容量 when 燃やすd.

For example, a mix of 20 per cent hydrogen and 80 per cent natural gas 供給するs around 86 per cent of the energy of just 燃やすing natural gas.

世帯 energy メーターs 記録,記録的な/記録する the 容積/容量 of gas used, so if hydrogen is 結局 麻薬を吸うd into the system then メーター readings will go up かなり.

にもかかわらず this, gas 法案s should not change from the 付加 容積/容量 - 供給するd hydrogen costs the same as natural gas, which is 現在/一般に unknown.

This is because gas 法案s are worked out on the 全体にわたる energy used by 消費者s, not the 容積/容量.
