How is the APR calculated?
APR stands for ǯ¼¡¤Î ɴʬΨ Ψ. It is the total Ψ you'll be ¹ðȯ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¤¹ðÁʡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÎÁ¶âd for borrowing money over a year on a credit card.
APRs are calculated by Äɲ乤ëing the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψ to the card ÎÁ¶â. APRs do not ´Þ¤à ÎÁ¶âs and ¹ðȯ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¤¹ðÁʡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÎÁ¶âs for ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ëd ÊÖºÑs or cash űÂàs
James Hyde said: 'Credit card APR is the total ɴʬΨ cost of borrowing each year, ¹½À®¤¹¤ëing Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ and ÎÁ¶âs.?
'This is in contrast to a Per ǯ (PA) Ψ, which considers Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψ only - rather than Á´ÂΤˤ錄¤ë cost.
'APR ·×»»¡¿¸«ÀѤês are °ìÈÌ¤Ë based on a credit ¸Â³¦ of ¡ò1,200, spent on the first day and then paid »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë in equal, Àµµ¬¤Î¡¿ÀµÁª¼ê instalments across the year.?
'This standardisation is to µö¤¹ for more useful like-for-like comparisons between À½ÉÊs.'
Hyde continues: 'The American ɽÌÀ¤¹¤ë Platinum Card carries a very high ÎÁ¶â of ¡ò650, which inflates the APR of this particular À½ÉÊ to over 700 per cent.?
'However, given the À½ÉÊ ¹ðȯ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¤¹ðÁʡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÎÁ¶âs a much more typical 31 per cent PA Ψ, ¤È°ì½ï¤Ë ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ðing a ²ñ°÷¤ÎÃÏ°Ì points rewards incentive and several other Íø±×s, the APR alone may not Àµ³Î¤Ë Âåɽ¤¹¤ë the true value ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ðd to ¾ÃÈñ¼Ôs by this À½ÉÊ.'
