Income 保護 cover helped Tim and Tracey escape poverty, so why isn't more 存在 done to help couples like them? JEFF PRESTRIDGE asks
How time 飛行機で行くs. Last week, I met Tim and Tracey Clarke, a delightful couple I first (機の)カム across just short of ten years ago for an article I wrote on income 保護 cover.
This 保険 供給するs 財政上の 保護 ? a 正規の/正選手 月毎の income ? in the 事例/患者 of long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 illness 妨げるing someone from working. It's something that's both underbought and undersold.
In August, the Clarkes will have been married for 37 years and say they have never 列/漕ぐ/騒動d. Maybe it's their strong 約束 that has stopped them 落ちるing out, but I imagine it's more to do with their 猛烈な/残忍な love.
However, life for the Clarkes is not 平易な. Tim, who turns 65 in August, has 審理,公聴会 問題/発行するs, while Tracey, seven years younger, has 視覚の 神経 atrophy, which leaves her with 制限するd 見通し.
She has two per cent of field 見通し, compared to the normal 180 degrees. 'It's like looking through a pinhole,' says Tracey. 'I have good 注目する,もくろむ days, but they are obliterated by the bad when I 戦う/戦い thudding 苦痛 behind my 注目する,もくろむs.'
生存者s: Income 保護 cover helped Tim and Tracey Clarke steer 支援する to a 安定した course
Tracey has labrador guide dog Loki to help when she is out. Sadly, Oakley, the dog they had when I first met them, died two years ago. Tim is also Tracey's 指定するd carer.
'She's an adorable rogue,' says Tracey of five-year-old Loki. The labrador's companion is Ossie, a Chinese Crested dog from a 救助(する) home in Wolverhampton. Ossie is a trained 審理,公聴会 assistant for Tim, 警報ing him to 可能性のある dangers that his ears can't 選ぶ up on ? for example, cyclists (犯罪の)一味ing their bells on the canal footpaths.
The Clarkes live on a narrowboat and spend their time 静かに 巡航するing the country's canals. Sounds idyllic, but the 推論する/理由 they ended up living on a boat was because they had to sell the family home. They 攻撃する,衝突する the 財政上の 衝撃を和らげるものs 13 years ago after Tracey's 注目する,もくろむ 条件 妨げるd her working as a pharmacy 専門家技術者.
Since I last met them nine years ago, the Clarkes have swapped their 58ft Sola Gratia boat for one that's 6ft longer. 'We needed the extra space,' says Tracey. The 昇格 was 基金d by an 相続物件 left by Tim's parents.
I 初めは met the Clarkes when they became part of a 事業/計画(する) called Seven Families to raise the profile of income 保護 cover. Seven families, all 攻撃する,衝突する by long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 health 問題/発行するs, were 供給するd with the 基金s they would have received if they had had cover in place.
The 月毎の income would be paid for a 最大限 of one year, with the organisers of the 事業/計画(する) (the Income 保護 仕事 軍隊) 確信して that it would show the transformational 衝撃 of income 保護 on each of the family's 財政/金融s. And, it would 最高潮の場面 the cover's 価値(がある). Tracey says the £600 a month they received from 存在 part of Seven Families was an enormous help.?It enabled them to buy solar パネル盤s for the boat, saving on heating costs. They were also able to 購入(する) waterproofs ? 決定的な for a life on the canals.?
'It got us out of the tyranny of poverty,' she 追加するs. Tracey also 利益d from 医療の support from ancillary service Best Doctors. The extra money also bred 信用/信任. Tracey wrote a blog about Oakley's 偉業/利用するs and she is doing a degree in theology. The couple also formed the Accessible 水路s 協会 to 確実にする the canals cater for the 無能にするd.
Nine years on, did the experience change their lives for the better? Tracey and Tim are not sure. Although Tracey's wish to 令状 a 調書をとる/予約する about Oakley did not work out, the couple have 開始する,打ち上げるd a small 商売/仕事 selling dog 扱う/治療するs, toys and poo 捕らえる、獲得するs. Called The Doggie Boat (doggieboat.co.uk), it 貿易(する)s online and they also 始める,決める up shop whenever they moor the boat in a suitable 場所. 'It's a bit of pocket money,' says Tracey.
Yet, the couple would not be able to get by without さまざまな 利益s ? personal independence 支払い(額), 雇用 and support allowance and carer's allowance.
Tim says: 'The Seven Families experience was also an 注目する,もくろむ-opener ーに関して/ーの点でs of what we 行方不明になるd out on by not having cover in place when Tracey's eyesight began to fail.' But he 追加するs: 'I'm still not sure that the public is aware of the cover's 存在. The 保険 産業 needs to do more to 納得させる people income 保護 cover can be a 財政上の life-saver if a 世帯 is 衝撃d by long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 illness. It needs to shout it from the 丘の頂上s.'
The data 示唆するs that sales of income 保護 計画(する)s are on an 上向き curve ? 16 per cent more 政策s (249,000) were sold last year than in 2022. But the numbers are hardly 注目する,もくろむ-catching and inferior to those for sales of 類似の 財政上の 保護 製品s such as 批判的な illness cover and life 保険.
It's WHY the 独立した・無所属 保護 仕事 軍隊 ? 基金d by some of our biggest 保険会社s ? wants to raise the 認識/意識性 of the 製品 の中で both the public and 助言者s who could sell it, but don't.
Its (選挙などの)運動をする kicks off next month to 同時に起こる/一致する with the tenth 周年記念日 場内取引員/株価 the ハッチング of the Seven Families 事業/計画(する). Jo Miller, the 仕事 軍隊's co-議長,司会を務める, says that 'raising 認識/意識性 of the ways in which people can 改善する their 財政上の resilience in 事例/患者 the 予期しない happens' will be the (選挙などの)運動をする's 重要な 焦点(を合わせる).
独立した・無所属 研究 示すs that 財政上の resilience の中で 世帯s remains frighteningly low ? one in ten adults has no 貯金 at all. 財政上の 保護 should form part of most 世帯s' 財政上の armoury.
This is too late for the Clarkes. Their big なぐさみ is that Seven Families gave them a マスコミ profile. They, along with other narrowboat owners, 星/主役にする in a new TV series called 狭くする Escapes, which 空気/公表するs on Channel 4 soon.
For many, living on the country's 水路s is a life choice. For Tim and Tracey, it was a 財政上の necessity. Only a mix of love and ingenuity makes it work for them.
Forget Isas this 週末. Just think 財政上の 保護. Do you have enough of it? If the answer is no, do something about it ASAP.
Neil Woodford 苦痛 goes on?
No one 伴う/関わるd in the demise of 基金 Woodford 公正,普通株主権 Income has come out of this ぐずぐず残る 財政上の sore 井戸/弁護士席 ? reputationally or in the 事例/患者 of 投資家s financially.
The 300,000 who had money in the 基金 when it was 一時停止するd in June 2019 are receiving up to £230 million of 是正する ? under a 計画/陰謀 agreed between the 財政上の 行為/行う 当局 and Link 基金 解答s, the 基金's overseer.?Some believe they have been short-changed.?
As the regulator spelt out last Thursday, Link failed to 保護する 投資家s by not 確実にするing the 基金 had 十分な cash to 会合,会う redemptions. It was this that 誘発する/引き起こすd the 基金's demise. Only by agreeing to 支払う/賃金 是正する did Link escape a multi-million 続けざまに猛撃する 罰金.
As for Neil Woodford, the brains behind Woodford 公正,普通株主権 Income, the regulator has now 確認するd that he and his 会社/堅い, Woodford 投資 管理/経営, were 問題/発行するd nearly two months ago with a 警告 notice of possible 施行 活動/戦闘 against them. As with Link, it 回転するs around 管理/経営 of the 基金's liquidi ty.
We don't know what 活動/戦闘 is 存在 considered ? a 罰金, 禁止(する) or 非難する on the wrist. But Woodford's lawyers say they will fight the regulator all the way, (人命などを)奪う,主張するing its findings are 'fundamentally misconceived'. The Woodford sore continues to weep.
