Will you Á곤¹¤ë any ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â from your husband or wife when they die? »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës are ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ generous for younger spouses - here's what you might get

Many couples worry about how the À¸¤»Ä¤ëing partner will Âн褹¤ë financially when one of them dies.

One of the most ¤¿¤Ó¤¿¤Ó¡Êˬ¤ì¤ë¡Ë questions to our columnist Steve Webb is how much ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â a ̤˴¿Íd partner can ¿äÄꤹ¤ë¡¿Í½ÁÛ¤¹¤ë to receive.

There is no straight answer as it depends on when the À¸¤»Ä¤ëing partner reaches or has passed ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age and their spouse's date of birth and ¹ñ²È¤Î Êݸ± µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë.

What you might get, if anything, is far ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ generous if you reached or are still ͽÄê to reach ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age after April 2016.

Below, we explain the old pre-2016 and new »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës for people who are ̤˴¿Íd. For a guide to what you might get, you can input your ¾ÜºÙ¡Ê¤Ë½Ò¤Ù¤ë¡Ës into this ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â Æ»¶ñ created by the À¯ÉÜ.

Will you inherit any state pension from your husband or wife after they die?

Will you Á곤¹¤ë any ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â from your husband or wife after they die?

How does the ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â work?

Everyone who builds up a ¹ñ²È¤Î Êݸ± µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë of at least 10 qualifying years is Ŭ³Ê¤Î for a ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â of some ÎÌ.

You need to have 35 years of ½Ð»ñ¡¿¹×¸¥s to get the ½½Ê¬¤Ê new flat Ψ ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â ³«»Ï¤¹¤ë¡¤ÂǤÁ¾å¤²¤ëd in April 2016.

Before that, you needed to have 30 years of qualifying ¹ñ²È¤Î Êݸ± ½Ð»ñ¡¿¹×¸¥s, though this number and the »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës ÊѲ½¤µ¤»¤ëd over the Àè¹Ô¤¹¤ë £±£°Ç¯´Ös.

The pre-2016 ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â was ʬÎö¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë into two tiers, the basic level ²Ã¤¨¤ë an extra sum if you paid ¤½¤Î¾å¤Î ½Ð»ñ¡¿¹×¸¥s ·Ðͳ¤Ç S2P and Serps.

You can fill gaps in ̤ʧ¤¤¤Î and or underpaid ¹ñ²È¤Î Êݸ± in previous years,?by making voluntary ºÇ¹â¤Î¡¤¤ò±Û¤¹-ups to buy extra qualifying years, and build up more years by »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing NI while you continue to work.

Everyone gets the ÁªÂò of deferring their ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â to get more in their later years. You can check your NI µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë here and get a ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â ͽ¬¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë here.?

How much is the ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â now?

The basic ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â is ¡ò169.50 a week or around ¡ò8,800 a year. It is topped up by Éղà ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â entitlements - S2P, Serps or ´¶ÈÀ¸¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ëd Â࿦ Íø±× - ¶¡µë¤¹¤ëd these were earned during working years.

The new 'flat Ψ' ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â introduced from 6 April 2016 is ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë ¡ò221.20 a week or ¡ ò11,500 a year if you qualify for the ½½Ê¬¤Ê ÎÌ.

People who have ·ÀÌód out of S2P and Serps over the years and retire after April 2016 might get ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ than the ½½Ê¬¤Ê new ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â.

Even if you paid in ½½Ê¬¤Ê for a whole 35 years or more, if you ·ÀÌód out for some years it might still ¸º¤º¤ë what you get, unless you have time to make it up with Àµµ¬¤Î¡¿ÀµÁª¼ê NI ½Ð»ñ¡¿¹×¸¥s before you are 66 or buy ºÇ¹â¤Î¡¤¤ò±Û¤¹-ups.

What are the pre-2016 »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës on Á곤¹¤ëing ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â?

If you reached ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age before 6 April 2016, far more generous »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës were in place for Á곤¹¤ëing »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës than for people retiring now.

What you get depends on how much of a ¹ñ²È¤Î Êݸ± µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë your spouse built up.

You also need to have not remarried before ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age.

Basic ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â: As long as you have not maxed out your own ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â entitlement already, and your spouse built up enough ¹ñ²È¤Î Êݸ± in their own ¸¢Íø - in other words, they weren't »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing the ¸º¤º¤ëd married women's stamp - you would get an Áý²Ã¤¹¤ë, or even the ½½Ê¬¤Ê basic ¡ò169.50 a week.

Éղà ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â: You Á곤¹¤ë 50-100 per cent of this ÎÌ depending on your late spouse's date of birth.

The Gov.uk website page on Éղà ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â says: 'If they died before 6 October 2002, you can Á곤¹¤ë up to 100 per cent of their Serps ǯ¶â.

'If they died on or after 6 October 2002, the ºÇÂç¸Â Serps ǯ¶â and ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â ºÇ¹â¤Î¡¤¤ò±Û¤¹ up you can Á곤¹¤ë depends on their date of birth.'

¸ø¼°Ê¸½ñ¡¤Ç§¤á¤ë that people who were self-¸Û¤¦d only built up basic ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â.

Also, many people were '·ÀÌód out' of »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing Éղà ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â?for periods, and their ½Ð»ñ¡¿¹×¸¥s went ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ their »äŪ¤Ê or work ·×²è¡¿±¢ËÅs instead, so they would have earned ¤è¤ê¾®¿ô¤Î if any of these extra ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës.

Were you underpaid ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â since ¸ºß ̤˴¿Íd?

If you think you should have Á곤¹¤ëd ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â from a late spouse but did not, there is a chance you ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ëd out.

Many women, ´Þ¤àing ǯÇڤΠ̤˴¿Ís, have been?underpaid ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â in a ¡ò1.2billion ¥¹¥¥ã¥ó¥À¥ë ˽Ϫ¤¹¤ëd by former ǯ¶âs Âç¿Ã Steve Webb and This is Money in 2020.

We have Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬d many stories of women receiving payouts of tens of thousands of ³¤±¤¶¤Þ¤ËÌԷ⤹¤ës, and a couple of »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ôs of ̤˴¿Ís ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ëd more than ¡ò100,000, after ¸ºß Ã¥¤¦d of the ÄûÀµ¤¹¤ë ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â ͽÄê to DWP errors.

Webb, now a partner at LCP, has a Æ»¶ñ on his ²ñ¼Ò¡¿·ø¤¤'s web page to help ̤˴¿Ís find out if they were underpaid ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â. The DWP's ÀÜ¿¨¤¹¤ë ¾ÜºÙ¡Ê¤Ë½Ò¤Ù¤ë¡Ës are here.???

What can you Á곤¹¤ë if you ¹¶·â¤¹¤ë¡¤¾×Æͤ¹¤ë ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age after 2016?

Under the new »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës your ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â is meant to be based on your own NI µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë, not that of your spouse.

What you might Á곤¹¤ë from them, if anything, is therefore far more ¸Â¤é¤ì¤¿¡¿Î©·ûŪ¤Ê if you reached or are still ͽÄê to reach ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age after April 2016.

This is ÆÃ¤Ë the »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô if you both come under the ÃÏ°Ì¡¤Ç¤Ì¿¤¹¤ë-2016 »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës.

If the spouse who dies qualified for a ½½Ê¬¤Ê new ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â, ¸½ºß¡¿°ìÈÌ¤Ë ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë ¡ò203.85 a week, or ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ than this a À¸¤»Ä¤ëing spouse will not Á곤¹¤ë anything.

However, if the late spouse got more than this ͽÄê to Éղà ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â built up in the past, the Ķ²á is regarded as a 'Êݸ¤ëd »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ë' and the spouse À¸¤±ä¤Ó¤ëing them gets half of it.

There are special »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës if you paid the married women's stamp, and you can use the Gov.uk Á곤¹¤ëing the ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â Æ»¶ñ to find out more.

°ìÊý¡¿¹ç´Ö, if a À¸¤»Ä¤ëing spouse comes under the old system and their spouse the new one, the former can fill gaps in their basic ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â and Á곤¹¤ë 50 p er cent of any Éղà ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â or Serps that the latter built up before April 2016.

If the ̤˴¿Íd spouse reaches ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age under the new system and their late spouse the old one, the former would Á곤¹¤ë 50-100 per cent of the latter's Éղà ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â or Serps (see the ¡ÊÊÆ¡Ëê¾å¤²¤¹¤ë¡¿¡Ê±Ñ¡ËÄóµÄ¤¹¤ë above) but not any of their basic ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â.

You can still receive a ¾å¤²¤ë to your ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â from the ½Ð»ñ¡¿¹×¸¥s of a late husband or wife even if they sadly did not live to draw a ǯ¶â. This would be payable when you reach your own ÌÀ¸À¤¹¤ë¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë ǯ¶â age.?
