ǯ¶â ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ê ·èÄ꡿ȽÄ꾡¤Á¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë: Should I consider Ää»ß¡Ê¤µ¤»¤ë¡Ëing drawdown and buying an annuity? (ºß¸Ë¡¿³ô image)

I retired in 2021 and moved one of my ǯ¶â ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ês to a large ²ñ¼Ò¡¿·ø¤¤ ·Ðͳ¤Ç a ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î ½õ¸À¼Ô.

After taking my 25 per cent ÀǶâ-²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê lump sum I was left with just under ¡ò50,000.?

From this, I agreed to take ¡ò3,000 per year for five years, starting in March 2022.

I am now wondering if I would be better off if I discontinued the ¸½ºß¤Î drawdown (three years still to go) and took the remaining ÎÌ as an annuity given that Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψs are much higher now and therefore I assume annuities will have ²þÁ±¤¹¤ëd also.

Would I have to use the same ²ñ¼Ò¡¿·ø¤¤ for the annuity as they ¸½ºß¡¿°ìÈÌ¤Ë »ý¤Ä¡¿¹´Î±¤¹¤ë my ǯ¶â ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ê or am I able to shop around and will the °Üž ÇØÉ餤¹þ¤à any ÎÁ¶âs?

Steve Webb replies: In a world where many people reach Â࿦ with very small ǯ¶â ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ês, the most ¤¢¤ê¤Õ¤ì¤¿ choice by far is to cash in the whole lot, taking a ÀǶ⠲òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê lump sum and »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing ÀǶâ on the »Ä¤ê¡¿µÙ·Æ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë.

But, over time, more people will be in the same position as you, having built up a more meaningful ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ê.

In this »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô, cashing in the whole lot may not be the best ÁªÂò as you could ľÌ̤¹¤ë a big ÀǶâ Ë¡°Æ and you may ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ë out on the chance to grow your ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ê ¤½¤Î¾å¤Î.

The question then arises as to how your money should be Åê»ñ¤¹¤ëd ÃÏ°Ì¡¤Ç¤Ì¿¤¹¤ë-Â࿦.

Under »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë out by the ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î ¹Ô°Ù¡¿¹Ô¤¦ Åö¶É, your ǯ¶â provider has to ask you about your ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës for the next five years, and will then make choices about how your money is Åê»ñ¤¹¤ëd based on your answer.?

This ²áÄø is known as putting you on an ¡ÆÅê»ñ Pathway¡Ç.

Under the »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës, you are given four ÁªÂòs to choose from regarding your ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës:

A. I have no ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës to touch my money in the next five years;

B. I ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë to use my money to »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë up a Êݾڡʿ͡Ëd income (annuity) in the next five years;

C. I ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë to start taking my money as a long-¾Î¤¹¤ë¡¤¸Æ¤Ö¡¿´ü´Ö¡¿ÍѸì income in the next five years;

D. I ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë to take out all my money in the next five years.

As you might imagine, the best way to Åê»ñ¤¹¤ë your money might be rather different if you don¡Çt need to touch your money at all for five years as against if you are going to take the whole lot out.

The idea of this ²áÄø is to enable your ǯ¶â provider to »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë things up in a way which best fits your °Õ¸þs at Â࿦.

However, a very important point to be aware of is that you are not bound by the answer you give, and you can change your mind at any point.

You could also ÊѲ½¤µ¤»¤ë the ÎÌ you draw É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë, but always check the »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ës first in »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô there are ¸Â³¦s or costs to having more ½ÀÆðÀ.?

In your »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô, it sounds as though at Â࿦ you took your ÀǶ⠲òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê lump sum but decided to leave the »Ä¤ê¡¿µÙ·Æ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of your ¥Þ¥ê¥Õ¥¡¥Ê to be Åê»ñ¤¹¤ëd, À½¿Þ¡¿ÃêÁª a Èæ³Ó¤·¤Æ modest sum each year (ÁªÂò C from the ̾Êí¡Ê¤ËºÜ¤»¤ë¡Ë¡¿É½¡Ê¤Ë¤¢¤²¤ë¡Ë above).

Åê»ñ¤¹¤ë your ǯ¶â, buy an annuity - or do both??

But you are ´°Á´¤Ë ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê to do something different with your drawdown ´ð¶â, whether because your circumstances have changed or because market ¾ò·ïs have changed.

¡¼¤Ë´Ø¤·¤Æ¡¿¡¼¤ÎÅÀ¤Çs of using your ´ð¶â to buy an annuity, the normal ²áÄø would be for you to be given what is called an ¡ÆOpen Market ÁªÂò¡Ç.

In simple ¾ò·ï this means you can take your money to any annuity provider and so you should shop around for the best Ψ you can get based on your own individual circumstances.

I would be surprised if your drawdown provider ¹ðȯ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¤¹ðÁʡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÎÁ¶âd you for deciding to move out of drawdown but you should of course check with them before making any ·èÄ꡿ȽÄ꾡¤Á¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës.

On your wider point, you are ¤ä¤á¤ë ¸¢Íø that annuity Ψs are now °ìÈÌ¤Ë a lot higher than they were when you first took your ǯ¶â a couple of years ago. But the Ψ of return you can get on money Åê»ñ¤¹¤ëd in your ǯ¶â is also likely to be higher.

If you carry on Åê»ñ¤¹¤ëing you will be taking some Åê»ñ ´í¸± but you will ÀøºßŪ¤Ë Íø±× from a growth in the value of your ´ð¶â.

On the other ¼êÅϤ¹, if you buy an annuity you will enjoy the certainty of a Êݾڡʿ͡Ëd income but probably get a lower return Á´ÂΤˤ錄¤ë.

The ¸¢Íø answer will depend on your individual circumstances and how comfortable you are with the ÉÔ³ÎÄê of Åê»ñ¤¹¤ëing.

I have covered some of the ¥×¥í¤Î¡¿»¿À®¤Îs and È¿ÂС¿º¾µ½s of buying an annuity in my previous column here: What is the best age to use my ¡ò220k ǯ¶â to buy an annuity?
