Did you 位置/汚点/見つけ出す smoke and mirrors trick that Santander pulled last week? SYLVIA MORRIS explains
We got a 汚い shock last week when Santander 発表するd a 大規模な 20 per cent 削減(する) to one of its 最高の,を越す 貯金 率s.
The bank, which has more than 14 million 顧客s, said it was 事実上の/代理 proactively as it 推定する/予想するd the Bank of England’s base 率 to 落ちる in the coming months.?
A few days after the shock 削減(する) 告示, it 引き上げ(る)d its mortgage 率s. Let’s hope others do not follow and 削減(する) their 貯金 率s, 特に given that the base 率 has yet to 落ちる from its 現在の level of 5.25 per cent.
I 恐れる all the good 進歩 made by the powerful 財務省 委員会 last year, when it 圧力d big banks to start rewarding savers with わずかに higher 利益/興味 率s, could very quickly be wiped out.
This morning, that same 委員会 will again 取調べ/厳しく尋問する the bosses of Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest and Santander over whether they are giving 顧客s a fair 取引,協定.
Sleight of 手渡す: Santander, which has more than 14m 顧客s, said it was 事実上の/代理 proactively as it 削除するd one of its 最高の,を越す 貯金 率s by a 大規模な 20%
But don’t 推定する/予想する much to 改善する on these 基準 平易な-接近 accounts. Banks have 転換d them わずかに since after their first 取調べ/厳しく尋問するing, but they still 支払う/賃金 as little as 1.2 per cent.
Santander’s surprise 率 削減(する) last week should serve as a sharp 思い出の品 that we need to keep a の近くに 注目する,もくろむ on the 率 we earn on our 貯金.
There are plenty of us who don’t, 最近の 研究 from Shawbrook shows. Thumbing through the big banks’ recently published 報告(する)/憶測 and accounts for last year is a worrying 思い出の品 of just how important this is.?
Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Barclays and HSBC made billions of extra 続けざまに猛撃するs from our complacent 傾向s last year. 銀行業者s enjoyed 記録,記録的な/記録する 利益(をあげる)s, which they have 大部分は withheld from savers.
They 増加する their 逮捕する 利益/興味 利ざやs ― the difference between the 量 they 支払う/賃金 savers and 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 borrowers ― and gave their savers in their 基準 平易な-接近 accounts as little extra as possible.
The Bank of England’s 通貨の 政策 委員会 会合,会うs tomorrow to 投票(する) on its base 率.?
経済学者s have told me they 推定する/予想する 利益/興味 率s to remain at 5.25 per cent and that 削減(する)s will come later.?
Base 率 is 推定する/予想するd to come 負かす/撃墜する 徐々に and 攻撃する,衝突する 4.2 per cent by the end of the year.
But that hasn’t stopped Santander from cutting its 平易な 接近 Saver 限られた/立憲的な 版 3 未熟に.?
It is a 大規模な 削減(する) from 5.2 per cent to 4.2 per cent from 中央の-May. The bank 開始する,打ち上げるd the account in September 2023 in a ‘snatch and run’ ruse.
信用d number-crunchers told me the bank took in billions of 続けざまに猛撃するs when the account was on sale for just eight days, putting the bank at the 最高の,を越す of the best buy (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs.?
The bank says the 最近の 削減 is 予定 to the 現在の market 条件s.
Santander’s move is in 示すd contrast to how slowly the big banks 反応するd when base 率 started to climb just over three years ago. It took them four months to pass on any of the 増加する to savers.
High Street banks have raised their 取引,協定s on 直す/買収する,八百長をするd-率 社債s ― but are still way behind newer banks, where a host 支払う/賃金 more than 5 per cent for one year.
Barclays is the best of a bad bunch at 4.65 per cent, while Santander 支払う/賃金s just 4.1 per cent and Halifax 4.15 per cent.?
They also give better headline 率s on some of their variable 率 accounts.
But they typically only 支払う/賃金 these for a year. For example, the Santander 平易な 接近 Saver 限られた/立憲的な 版 3 headline 率 減少(する)s to just 1.2 per cent after 12 months when your money is moved out of the account into its Everyday Saver.
Halifax 特別手当 Saver 支払う/賃金s 4.1 per cent but only for a year, and to those who make three or より小数の 撤退 during that time.?
After 12 months you find yourself in its Instant Saver with a lousy 率 of between 1.45 per cent and 1.8 per cent.
These ‘go-to’ 率s look 特に pathetic when compared with their 競争相手s which 支払う/賃金 over 5 per cent, with the 最高の,を越す 率 of 5.08 per cent from 借り切る/憲章 貯金 Bank.?
The 普通の/平均(する) 率, says data scrutineers Moneyfacts, is 3.18 per cent.
平易な-接近 cash Isa 率s from the big banks are just as bad. One of the worst is 1.16 per cent from Barclays.?
The Santander Isa Saver at 1.2 per cent and Lloyds Bank at 1.4 per cent are also terrible when you can earn more than 5 per cent with other providers such as 半導体素子 (5.1 per cent), Zopa (5.08 per cent), 借り切る/憲章 貯金 Bank (5.03 per cent), and Harpenden Building Society and Kent 依存, both at 5.01 per cent. The 普通の/平均(する) 率 is 3.32 per cent.
