How MI5 and the 連邦検察局 were behind the (警察の)手入れ,急襲 that saw Jagger 刑務所,拘置所d and started those rumours about Marianne Faithfull and the 火星 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業

Late in the afternoon of February 11, 1967, a 軍用車隊 of police 乗り物s left the 静かな West Sussex town of Chichester, 長,率いるing for the nearby seaside village of West ?Wittering. It carried 18 officers, led by a 長,指導者 視察官 in 十分な dress uniform 完全にする with 儀式の baton.

The size of the 仕事 軍隊 示唆するd a 急襲する on some ?テロリスト group already 有罪の of 多重の 残虐(行為)s and likely to be planning more. Which was very much how the 警官,(賞などを)獲得するs themselves saw it, for they were on their way to 破産した/(警察が)手入れする Rolling 石/投石するs Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for 麻薬 所有/入手 at Richards’s country cottage, Redlands.

So was 開始する,打ち上げるd the Swinging 60s’ most lurid スキャンダル, soon to be the 支配する of a new film, which will join Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes’s four Beatles biopics, Trevor Beatty’s Midas Man (about the Fab Four’s 経営者/支配人, Brian Epstein) and a slew of other films and TV 演劇s portraying pop’s superheroes 支援する in the いわゆる ‘10年間 that never dies’.

Today, the three 生き残るing 石/投石するs are 国家の treasures almost on a par with 王族 or Shakespeare. But as a five-piece 禁止(する)d in the 中央の-60s they were a running story of 反乱 and 乱暴/暴力を加える with their shaggy hair (erroneously thought to be 十分な of fleas), their 欠如(する) of matching shiny 控訴s like The Beatles and sarkiness or sullenness with the マスコミ.

Above all, frontman Jagger, with his girlish でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる and oversized lips pouting soft-porn chart-toppers like Little Red Rooster, Satisfaction and Let’s Spend The Night Together, seemed a prancing, sneering devil incarnate.

What was about to 広げる was a 一致した 行為/法令/行動する of 復讐 against him and Richards by the police, the 司法の and ― as I was the first to discover ― both Britain’s and America’s 安全 services.

In the 21st century, 圧力(をかける) stories about pop 星/主役にするs are 一般に 演習s in sycophancy. In the 60s, however, the 星/主役にするs were under constant attack for their indulgence in 麻薬s and incitement of their fans to follow their lead.

Having 記録,記録的な/記録するd a song called Get Off Of My Cloud, Jagger appeared a pre-著名な example. 現実に, the supposed wild man of 激しく揺する ‘n’ roll was innately 用心深い and nervous about 麻薬s, preferring the ‘high’ of mingling with High Society.

Nonetheless, when the News of the World 機動力のある a おとり捜査 against 麻薬-soused pop idols Jagger was their 最初の/主要な 的. This 存在 long before the phone 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスing and 違法な 監視 which would lead to the Sunday paper’s 終結, the only way of ‘指名するing the 有罪の man’, in its own sanctimonious phrase, was to 直面する Jagger in person.

Accordingly, two reporters visited a favourite pop 星/主役にする hangout, Blaises club in Kensington, spotted a familiar Rolling 石/投石する in the 半分-不明瞭 and asked him point-blank if he took 麻薬s.

Their quarry 自由に 認める that he did and even 招待するd them to join him for ‘a smoke’ (to 株 a 共同の.) Unfortunately, neither could tell one Rolling 石/投石する from another and in mistake for Jagger, they had been quizzing the 禁止(する)d’s lead guitarist, Brian Jones.

The paper’s ‘expose’ on Jagger the に引き続いて Sunday was thus a 甚だしい/12ダース 名誉き損 for which there could be no possible defence. The only way it could 避ける 支払う/賃金ing him 大規模な 損害賠償金 was to 設立する that, its Blaises 失敗 notwithstanding, it had still fingered the 権利 pe rson.

Jagger’s wisest move, knowing the News of The World’s 評判 for dirty tricks, would have been to 嘘(をつく) very low until his 名誉き損 活動/戦闘 (機の)カム to 法廷,裁判所.

Instead, with uncharacteristic naivety, he 受託するd an 招待 for himself and his pop chanteuse girlfriend Marianne Faithfull to spend the next 週末 with other friends at Richards’s cottage ― and there take his first LSD trip.

Besides Jagger and Richards, the party 含むd one other 二塁打 A-名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) musician ― Beatle George Harrison with his wife, the fashion model Pattie Boyd.

Of Richards’s other five house guests, two were Rolling 石/投石するs 信奉者s, the gifted young photographer Michael Cooper and a painter and ‘flower child’ called Nicky Cramer.

Two more were somewhat older, upper-class types (麻薬)常用者d to the thrill of hanging out with such social pariahs. Christopher Gibbs ran an 排除的 antique shop in Chelsea while Robert Fraser was a high-end art 売買業者 whose louche lifestyle had earned him the 愛称 ‘Groovy (頭が)ひょいと動く’.

Last, and most important, was an American with dark curly hair and an aquiline profile who’d insinuated himself into Richards’s 側近 only about a week 以前. Known only as ‘酸性の King David’, he was both to 供給(する) and dispense the LSD which was to be the 週末’s 最高潮の場面.

He’d brought with him a lavish 供給(する) of a new variety called 日光 which 供給するd the mildest of trips, 保証(人)d to be without the 麻薬’s possible nightmarish after-影響s.

This the 酸性の King took around to the others on the Sunday somewhat in the spirit of 早期に morning tea, since all were still in bed.

After a lazy day in the 酸性の’s gentle afterglow, Harrison 発表するd that he was bored so he and Pattie were 運動ing 支援する to their home in Esher, Surrey.

It would later be (人命などを)奪う,主張するd that the police waited for him to leave rather than 破産した/(警察が)手入れする a 国家的に adored Beatle.

The others gathered in the high-raftered living room watching an old film on television at the same time as listening to (頭が)ひょいと動く Dylan at 最大限 容積/容量 on the hi-fi while Fraser’s Moroccan valet, Ali, 用意が出来ている a buffet supper.

Marianne Faithfull had just taken a bath and, with her 着せる/賦与するs muddied after a country ramble, had wrapped herself in a fur rug she’d 設立する on one of the beds.

‘It was,’ Gibbs 解任するd, ‘a scene of pure domesticity.’ にもかかわらず the fame, or infamy, of its owner, ?Redlands 所有するd no 安全 対策 in the form of CCTV or alarms and no one ?realised the police had arrived until they were 注ぐing through every door.

Jagger’s 狼狽 can only be guessed at. ‘Poor Mick,’ Faithfull 反映するd later. ‘The first time he tries 酸性の, half the 巡査s in ?Sussex come after him.’

To the raiders, the sight of a gorgeous young woman, naked but for a fur rug, alone with seven men, one of them the most ?blatantly 性の 存在 on the 激しく揺する 行う/開催する/段階, spelt only O.R.G.Y. Afterwards a rumour would sweep the country that Jagger and Faithfull had been interrupted during a sex 行為/法令/行動する 伴う/関わるing a 火星 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業 with their friends as slavering voyeurs.

Just one of the officers, a sergeant, had had any training in 麻薬 承認 and their search of the cottage was bizarrely selective. They ignored the briefcase 含む/封じ込めるing the residue of the LSD that 酸性の King David had left in plain sight in the sitting room, instead pouncing on a few shreds of cannabis in an ashtray and four tablets in a pocket of a green velvet jacket belonging to Jagger.

These were 単に a travel sickness 医薬 whose amphetamine content made them 違法な in Britain although nowhere else in Europe. They had 現実に been bought by Faithfull, who’d left them in Jagger’s pocket without his knowledge. But with the unselfishness of which the egomaniacal 星/主役にする could いつかs be 有能な, he saw how 損失ing this could be to her image.

‘He decided his career could stand a 麻薬s 破産した/(警察が)手入れする but 地雷 couldn’t,’ she 解任するd, ‘so he said the tablets were his’.

The police made an (a)自動的な/(n)自動拳銃 distinction between the older, conservatively attired Gibbs and Fraser and the youthful swingers in their garish Carnaby Street threads. ‘Anyone can see that you’re a gen tleman,’ one of them 現実に told Fraser, little 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うing he had 20 ヘロイン pills in one pocket of his gentlemanly blazer. Indeed, Fraser almost 説得するd him the pills were 単に aspirin. ‘Then he said, “We’ll just keep one for 分析”,’ Fraser would 解任する. ‘And I knew I’d had it.’

The next Sunday’s News of the World carried an 排除的 報告(する)/憶測 that ‘two 国家的に famous 指名するs’ had been caught with 麻薬s while a third (Harrison) had left just beforehand.

All in all it 完全に vindicated that 以前 untenable story about Jagger’s 麻薬 use, for which his 名誉き損 活動/戦闘 now wouldn’t have a 祈り.

最初 there was some hope that Jagger, Richards and Fraser could 賄賂 their way out of trouble. A 麻薬 売買業者 friend of Richards’s 指名するd ‘Spanish Tony’ Sanchez (人命などを)奪う,主張するd to have a 接触する inside the police who could arrange for the さまざまな 見本s collected in the (警察の)手入れ,急襲 to be ‘lost’ before they could be analysed.

A bung of £7,000 (£100,000 today) was paid 経由で Spanish Tony, but failed to 妨げる the 見本s from reaching the police lab.

にもかかわらず the News of the World’s (人命などを)奪う,主張する to 単独の authorship of their misfortune, Jagger and Richards began to 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う someone inside Redlands had betrayed them.

疑惑 fell first on the Chelsea flower child Nicky Cramer, for no good 推論する/理由 other than his 存在 not such a の近くに friend as Fraser or Gibbs. So a thuggish associate of the 石/投石するs 指名するd David Litvinoff 招待するd Cramer to his flat where, helped by the 禁止(する)d’s driver, Tom Keylock, and an actor-cum-ギャング(個々) 指名するd John Bindon, he began scientifically (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域ing him to a 低俗雑誌.

When this failed to elicit a 自白, Cramer was pronounced in the (疑いを)晴らす.

The other possible 密告者 was 酸性の King David, who’d joined Richards’s 側近 only a f ew days 事前の to the (警察の)手入れ,急襲 and whose 高度に 明白な briefcase 十分な of LSD had mysteriously failed to attract the police’s attention.

But the 酸性の King had hurriedly flown 支援する to his native America that same night and now seemed to have 完全に 消えるd.

It soon 現れるd that the Redlands (警察の)手入れ,急襲 had been only the first 段階 of a 一致した 公式の/役人 成果/努力 to roll away the 石/投石するs.

On the same day Jagger and Richards made their 予選 外見 at Chichester 治安判事s 法廷,裁判所, Scotland Yard’s 麻薬s squad (警察の)手入れ,急襲d Brian Jones’s Chelsea flat.

Their search quickly 暴露するd a bowling ball-sized lump of hashish and a glass phial 含む/封じ込めるing traces of コカイン.

However, Jones’s 裁判,公判, 有罪の判決 and その後の 悲劇の physical and mental 拒絶する/低下する would be 影を投げかけるd by Jagger and Richards’s 外見 at Chichester 栄冠を与える 法廷,裁判所 in July 1967, 中途の through that grievously-mistitled Summer Of Love.

Though the 恐らく Neanderthal 石/投石するs were docile and co-operative throughout, Jagger at one point was paraded 手錠d to his co-(刑事)被告, Fraser, like some Victorian felon を待つing the noose.

The 陪審/陪審員団 consisted 大部分は of 地元の 高官s who would have 見解(をとる)d 激しく揺する ‘n’ roll with disfavour if not disgust. The 裁判官’s surname was 封鎖する, which as the 裁判,公判 proceeded ますます seemed an 正確な description of his 長,率いる. Jagger pleaded not 有罪の to 所有するing 違法な amphetamines, 説 his doctor had 定める/命ずるd them to help him stay awake during long hours in the 記録,記録的な/記録するing studio.

But since this had been only on the telephone and after the (警察の)手入れ,急襲, 裁判官 封鎖する 支配するd it not to be a valid prescription, so no defence to the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金. The 陪審/陪審員団 retired and after only six minutes returned with a 有罪の 判決.

Richards’s time i n the ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる brought the first 詳細(に述べる)d account of the 急襲する on Redlands and ‘the girl in the fur rug’ who 構成するd its most 説得力のある 詳細(に述べる).

Marianne Faithfull’s 指名する wasn’t について言及するd but she was in 法廷,裁判所 in support of Jagger every day, recognised as the rug-wearer by every 新聞記者/雑誌記者 現在の and 暗黙に on 裁判,公判 for 性の voracity that had only ever 存在するd in the minds of the police.

Richards 配達するd the best line when asked by 起訴するing counsel if he saw nothing 半端物 in a 半分-nude young woman 存在 alone with seven males. ‘We are not old men,’ he replied. ‘We’re not worried about petty morals.’

Richards having also been 設立する 有罪の, 封鎖する 宣告,判決d the two 石/投石するs in tandem. For 所有/入手 of the amphetamine-based travel sickness pills, Jagger received three months 刑務所,拘置所 with a £200 罰金 and Richards a year 加える a £500 罰金 for ‘permitting’ cannabis use on his 前提s.

刑務所,拘置所 条件 for first-time 違反者/犯罪者s on counts that 普通は would have 率d only 保護監察 drew a wail of anguish from the fans (人が)群がるing the public gallery and shocked even the police ?勧めるs. Indeed, the pair were 扱う/治療するd like 常習的な 犯罪のs, separated to minimise their troublemaking 可能性のある and consigned to two of London’s toughest 刑務所,拘置所s, Brixton for Jagger, Wormwood Scrubs for Richards.

The inference was that it would teach them 尊敬(する)・点 for 当局 and get their hair 削減(する).

Here at last sanity finally began to take 持つ/拘留する, even in 4半期/4分の1s not 自然に 井戸/弁護士席-性質の/したい気がして に向かって Rolling 石/投石するs.

No いっそう少なく an 設立 人物/姿/数字 than the editor of The Times, William Rees-Mogg (father of Tory 政治家,政治屋 Jacob) wrote a leader in the newspaper 非難するing 裁判官 封鎖する’s 治療 of Jagger, headlined by a quotation from the 広大な/多数の/重要な 18th century satirist Alexander ローマ法王: Who Breaks A バタフライ On A Wheel?

The 石/投石するs were 解放(する)d from 刑務所,拘置所, Jagger’s 宣告,判決 減ずるd to a year’s 条件付きの 発射する/解雇する and Richards’s was quashed (though Fraser, having no (選挙などの)運動をする behind him, went inside for six months with hard 労働).

Until the News of the World’s 終結 in 2011, it remained hugely proud of its 役割 in taking them 負かす/撃墜する, however 一時的に. But, as I discovered while 研究ing my biography of Jagger, far more 悪意のある 軍隊s were also at work.

In January 1967, a little-known U.S. actor 指名するd David Snyderman passing through Heathrow had been caught with a large 量 of LSD in his luggage.

The customs 公式の/役人 who made the 発見 had called in some 脅迫してさせるing men who said they belonged to Britain’s 内部の 安全 service, MI5, and told Snyderman there was ‘a way out’ of his predicament. This was to infiltrate the Rolling 石/投石するs inner circle, 押し進める his 酸性の to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, then contrive to get them 破産した/(警察が)手入れするd. In return, the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s against him would be dropped and he’d be 許す d to leave the country.

MI5 were 単に intermediaries for America’s 連邦の Bureau of 調査, 特に an offshoot known as Cointelpro (Counterintelligence Program) 始める,決める up by the 連邦検察局’s 創立者 J. Edgar Hoover in the 1920s to 戦闘 ‘破壊分子’ ?elements by means often outside the 法律.

In 1967, the 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 破壊分子 had come to 含む 激しく揺する 星/主役にするs ― The Rolling 石/投石するs above all. For their 共同の ringleaders to have 犯罪の 有罪の判決s would 保証(人) they were 否定するd ビザs for U.S. 小旅行するs into the foreseeable 未来.

Although Snyderman had ?carried out his 使節団 and afterwards 持続するd the lowest ?possible profile, as his Cointelpro handlers 教えるd, relocating to Los Angeles and changing his ?surname to Jove, the end result had been what he 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語d ‘a lifetime of 恐れる’.

Even after Cointelpro was ?解散するd に引き続いて a 上院 調査 into its methods in 1971, he’d 推定する/予想するd that one day somebody would come after him to make 確かな he could never ‘ネズミ’ on it. Jove kept his secret until his death ― from natural 原因(となる)s ― in 2004.

Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull 中止するd to be a couple in 1970 but each 保持するd a ぐずぐず残る curiosity about the true 身元 of 酸性の King David.

It wasn’t until late in the 70s that a film スパイ/執行官 指名するd Maggie Abbott, who 代表するd Jagger in Hollywood and was one of the few people in whom Jove had ?confided, finally enlightened him.

And to this day, the 火星 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業 story still 循環させるs.
