Why Tamsin turned to 罪,犯罪: TAMSIN GREIG on her terrifying 役割 in Sexy Beast, why she never 割れ目d Hollywood and the unbearable loss of her friend Paul Ritter

|

Chatting with Tamsin Greig over an oat milk flat white in a smart London hotel feels incongruous hours after watching her maim another woman in a spittle-flecked, profanity-噴出するing 激怒(する).

The Kent-born actress, 57, a borderline 国家の treasure, is known for her versatility: a beadily ironic presence in sitcoms such aEpisodes, 黒人/ボイコット 調書をとる/予約するs and Friday Night Dinner; a much-garlanded classical 行う/開催する/段階 actress for the RSC and the first 女性(の) Malvolio in Twelfth Night at the 国家の; and the woman who’s played Debbie Aldridge in The Archers, on and off, since 1991.

But her 役割 in the new 最高位の+ ギャング(個々) series Sexy Beast feels like a 出発. Michael Caleo’s series unpacks the 1990s backstory of cockney thieves Gal and Don, 初めは played by Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley in Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 film.

In the reboot, Greig pl ays Cecilia, a hard-smoking, 核の blonde amusement-arcade proprietor with dreams of a 賭事ing empire, who ruthlessly 支配(する)/統制するs the 犯罪の career of her psychotic but 攻撃を受けやすい younger brother Don (Emun Elliott).

‘I have never, ever been as vicious to another human 存在,’ she says of 軍隊ing Don to 粉砕する a woman’s 手渡す with a 大打撃を与える. Cecilia is terrifying. She could 星/主役にする 負かす/撃墜する and out-断言する Tony Soprano or Tommy Shelby and she 新たな展開s easygoing Gal (James McArdle) 一連の会議、交渉/完成する her little finger. ‘She’s hard and uncompromising because she’s trying to keep all the elements in place. Without any backup. We don’t often see women (権力などを)行使するing that 量 of 力/強力にする and self-信用/信任.’

The 大打撃を与える scene gave her blinding 頭痛s (all that 叫び声をあげるing takes a (死傷者)数).

In a later episode where she attacks Elliott’s Don, ‘Every time they said “削減(する)” I put my 武器 一連の会議、交渉/完成する him and said, “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.” And I think he was a bit like, “Get the f**k off me. We’re all 権利.”

But he 許すd me to 抱擁する him because I 設立する it so 苦しめるing.’

Someone told me, be careful ― Los Angeles is death by 激励

She has 苦しむd for 職業s before, needing an osteopath thanks to the corsets in Julian Fellowes’s Belgravia (2020), while two 厳しい chest 感染s in her first musical, Women on the 瀬戸際 of a Nervous 決裂/故障 (2015) left her coughing so 不正に that 支援する spasms 軍隊d her on to crutches.

以前, the most e motionally troubling 役割 for Greig ? who has three now adult children with her husband, actor-turned-writer Richard Leaf ? was as infanticidal Mrs Wickens in the 2021 remake of The Amazing Mr Blunden.

‘I had to 得る,とらえる children and spit in their 直面するs,’ she says. ‘I didn’t like that. But I did it.’ It’s a living, I say. ‘For the art. I don’t do it for the money,’ she はっきりと 訂正するs me. ‘Don’t put in that I 攻撃する,衝突する children for money.’

In Sexy Beast with co-星/主役にする Emun Elliott

She used to ‘jump out of aeroplanes as a 十代の少年少女’ but now, as she’s become ‘いっそう少なく springy’ with age, she channels this 勧める to ‘lean into the abyss’ into her work. ‘I’m selective about what I do now because

I don’t want to go to work unchallenged,’ she says. ‘I don’t want to become 安全な.’

She is one of three daughters from the third marriage of her father, who was 27 years older than her mother and already 60 when Greig was born.

Having had an international career as a 化学者/薬剤師, he suddenly became a stay-at-home dad, albeit with a 週末 職業 as a William Hill bookie. ‘He did the taking us to school and the shopping and the washing, いつかs やめる 不正に. But it wasn’t an 問題/発行する.’

To 補足(する) her mother’s secretarial income, they took in up to five lodgers at a time in their Northwest London house. ‘Mostly overseas students. We didn’t have friends who (機の)カム home after school because the 状況/情勢 was so 半端物.

But that was our normal. And it was very 安全な. We knew that we were loved. There was no money so we all got 職業s very 早期に on.

That gave us a rea l sense of the 価値(がある) of things.’ She remains の近くに to her sisters, a 副 長,率いる in North London and a teacher of maths and meteorology ? ‘I suppose, in a different way, performers.’

Having excelled at 演劇 at Camden School for Girls, she failed to get into 演劇 school, and instead 熟考する/考慮するd 事実上の/代理 at Birmingham University. She took a secretarial course, worked at the Family Planning 協会 and, even after getting the Archers part, had to take temp 職業s for a その上の five years.

Then, around the time her father died in 1997, she met Leaf at a 包む party for Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere.

Her first big 審査する break (機の)カム と一緒に Dylan Moran and 法案 Bailey in the sitcom 黒人/ボイコット 調書をとる/予約するs in 2000, followed by the surreally brilliant hospital show Green Wing in 2004. But the fact that her fame has long (太陽,月の)食/失墜d her husband’s isn’t an 問題/発行する.

When we started having children, we realised that he wasn’t as 利益/興味d in 事実上の/代理 as he was in 令状ing and thought that he would lay that 負かす/撃墜する ーするために 令状 but also to be around with the children.’

From 2011 to 2017, Episodes saw her cast with Stephen Mangan as married British sitcom writers repurposing a homegrown 攻撃する,衝突する for Friends 星/主役にする Matt LeBlanc in Los Angeles. Surely that should have led to a bigger career in the US?

‘I mean, I went for 会合s, all that sort of thing,’ she says, ‘but someone at home told me, “Be careful, LA is death by 激励.”

It was very difficult not to burst out laughing when Americans in the 産業 said, “Oh my god, you’re going to change the landscape of comedy, we’re really excited.” Also, I wasn’t 勇敢に立ち向かう enough to take my kids to a different country. And if I’d gone to America, I wouldn’t have got Friday Night Dinner.’

That show saw her play the matriarch of a ユダヤ人の family and Greig recently 反映するd that, even though she has Ashkenazi 遺産, it was かもしれない culturally 不適切な for her to take the 役割.

This was partly 奮起させるd by her children, ‘who come home with いつかs やめる 挑発的な 姿勢s, and that 需要・要求するs a compassionate 返答, rather than just belligerently 説, “It was 罰金 in my day’’.’

She 述べるs the death of her co-星/主役にする Paul Ritter in 2021 as ‘unbearable’. During lockdown, when Ritter had already been 診断するd with the brain tumour that killed him, Greig’s husband adapted a novel called 会合,会う Me at the Museum

She and Ritter 記録,記録的な/記録するd it for 無線で通信する 4 while he was still 井戸/弁護士席 enough to work. In his last two weeks, when illness meant he could no longer speak, Ritter’s family could still hear his 発言する/表明する coming through the 無線で通信する. The last episode was broadcast on Good Friday ? Ritter died on 復活祭 Monday.

Greig’s next 職業 is in The 深い Blue Sea on 行う/開催する/段階 in Bath, then ‘whatever turns up’, as long as it’s challenging. Does she covet a part in a big fantasy franchise or a superhero movie? The latter would mean thrills galore ? she could jump out of a 計画(する) again. ‘Ah,’ she smiles, ‘but I’ve already done that.’
