What does Prince William 現実に believe, asks CATHERINE PEPINSTER? Christian 約束 支えるs his father, King Charles - and 持つ/拘留するs our 君主国 together...

|

With Ash Wednesday 場内取引員/株価 the start of Lent tomorrow, the King’s thoughts will be doubtless be turning to an important moment in the year of a 君主 and an occasion he will not want to 行方不明になる.

An 古代の Christian 儀式 mixing leadership and service, next month's Maundy Thursday service sees the 君主 手渡す out 特に 造幣局d Maundy coins while the feet of his 支配するs are ceremonially washed .

It has 深い roots.

Stretching 支援する to the Middle Ages, the Maundy Service 祝う/追悼するs the the Last Supper, when Christ washed the feet of his disciples but also remembers the かかわり合い to serve made in the King's 載冠(式)/即位(式) 公約するs.

King Charles's 載冠(式)/即位(式) was a 深く,強烈に 宗教的な 儀式. His 約束 to serve God and the nation will be echoed at the Maundy Service next month

Prince William is 熱烈な about helping others through 活動/戦闘. He is pictured leaving the 行う/開催する/段階 after 配達するing a speech during the London 空気/公表する 救急車 Charity 祝祭. But little is known about his beliefs even though he is 始める,決める to be the next 最高の 知事 of the Church

Christian 約束 was important to the late Queen, who is seen here 手渡すing out Maundy Money at St George's Chapel, Windsor in 2019

It is no 事故 that Handel’s Zadok the Priest - heard at every 載冠(式)/即位(式) since that of George II - is sung each year.

Yet with King Charles now receiving 治療, there is every chance he will not be there this year (the 発生地 is yet to be 公表する/暴露するd) leaving this 義務 to  - most likely  - his 相続人, Prince William.

The 仕事 would certainly remind the prince of his 運命 ? and of how very much that 未来 is bound up with Christian 約束.

It would also raise some questions that nag a little more insistently with every passing year: just what does Prince William believe?

And how committed is he to the Church of England he will one day lead.

There can be no 疑問 about his father, King Charles, just as there was no 疑問 about his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth.

Charles’s かなりの 約束 is very real and has 支えるd him over the years.

まっただ中に the かなりの ニュース報道 given over the years to the King’s 利益/興味 in other 約束s, 特に Islam and Judaism, his own strong Christian belie fs have いつかs been overlooked.

READ MORE: Could Prince William break centuries of tradition and 削減(する) the 王室の link to the Church of England?

This is a mistake. Charles prays frequently. He uses overtly reverential language, referring to ‘Our Lord Jesus Christ’ rather than just ‘Jesus’, for example.

He had his own chapel built in the grounds of his home, Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.

Some of the greatest 影響(力)s on him are devout 信奉者s, 含むing the former Bishop of London, Lord Chartres, the Bishop of Southwark, the late Mervyn Stockwood, the Jungian and Cambridge chaplain, the Rev Harry Williams and the poet, Kathleen Raine.

にもかかわらず some 早期に questions about how the King would style himself at his 載冠(式)/即位(式), he chose to be Defender of 約束.

Speaking to the nation for the first time after his 即位, he used these words: ‘I solemnly 誓約(する) myself throughout the remaining time God 認めるs me.’

Eight months later, he was 迎える/歓迎するd at his 載冠(式)/即位(式) by a choir boy ? the youngest person there ? who stepped 今後 and sai d: ‘Your Majesty, as children of the kingdom of God we welcome you in the 指名する of the King of Kings.

And Charles replied: ‘In his 指名する and after his example, I come not to be served but to serve’.

The なぐさみ of 約束 was something that his mother, Elizabeth II also knew.

A keen a reader of Scripture, she knew the Anglican 調書をとる/予約する of ありふれた 祈り intimately, and her most treasured 所有/入手s 含むd a special 調書をとる/予約する of 祈りs 用意が出来ている to help her 準備する for her 1953 載冠(式)/即位(式) by the then 大司教 of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher.

When she was dying, a church 大臣 read to her from the Bible.

If Elizabeth II’s was a simple Anglican 約束, 支えるd by Sunday church 出席 throughout her life, her son’s 利益/興味 in 宗教 seems to be more like that of his father, Prince Philip ? 十分な of curiosity and a sense of adventurous 探検.

His 広大な/多数の/重要な friend, Lord Chartres, once told me that the King ‘is enthralled by 宗教’.

That fascination does not seem to be 株d with the Prince of むちの跡s.

There is little 証拠 of his own 宗教的な beliefs, although he was christened as a baby and later 確認するd by Lord Chartres.

By the time Charles was in his forties ? the age that William is at now ? he was 定期的に given 非常に長い speeches about 宗教 and 倫理学.

Speechmaking is not William’s forte, it is true. He prefers practical 活動/戦闘.

Where there is 証拠 of his 利益/興味 in 約束, it is in his strong 関係s to 宗教的な organisations that work at the grassroots, helping those who are homeless. About such things, he is 熱烈な.

His charitable かかわり合い has not, however, been enough to 妨げる s peculation that William might 削減(する) 関係 with the Church of England when his time comes. That he would not be 最高の 知事.

によれば 伝記作家 Robert Hardman's new 調書をとる/予約する, Charles III - New King, New 法廷,裁判所, William is not a 正規の/正選手 church-goer and 'is not instinctively comfortable in a 約束 環境.'

Not that the prince could change the 関係 片側だけに, for the British 君主国 and the 設立するd Church, the Church of England, are so bound up together that he could not become King without 存在 ‘in communion with’ the Church of England, によれば the 行為/法令/行動する of 解決/入植地, 1701.

憲法の 専門家s Robert Hazell and (頭が)ひょいと動く Morris wrote recently that:

‘However 権利 in 原則, 除去するing the 制限 on the 君主’s freedom of belief would in practice raise questions about the new changed 憲法の status of the Church of England together with the 役割s of 議会 and the 君主国 に向かって 宗教 捕まらないで’.

The 大司教 of Canterbury Justin Welby 成し遂げるs the Washing of The Feet 儀式 during the Sung Eucharist, The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday service at Canterbury Cathedral last year

Some of the Maundy money 分配するd by the Queen in  2003

King Charles 分配するs the Maundy money to 74 men and 74 women, mirroring the age of the 君主, in York Minster last year 2023

Prince William 支払う/賃金s homage to his father in a moving moment 逮捕(する)d at last year's 載冠(式)/即位(式). King Charles has a 深い の間の est in 事柄s of 約束 but that does not seem to be 株d by his son

Today and in the 即座の 未来, the King’s siblings and children will be more 関心d for his health than the 憲法の niceties of church 出席.

But whoever 手渡すs out Maundy money to the 75 chosen 国民s ? 75 to 示す Charles’s age ? on March 28, this much will be 避けられない: Christian 約束, which at the heart of the King’s life and looked-for 回復, is at the very heart of 君主国 itself.

At some point, answers will be needed.
