EXCLUSIVEI know what 肉親,親類d of 殺し屋 殺人d Jill Dando: As wild theories about the TV presenter's death 固執する, the Met's lead 探偵,刑事 tells STEPHEN WRIGHT why he's sure his instincts are 権利 in an 排除的 interview

April 26, 1999, had started as a 静かな day in Scotland Yard's 殺人 部隊 in Kensington, South-West London.

探偵,刑事 長,指導者 視察官 Hamish Campbell had been on call for a week but, with no 殺人s to 調査/捜査する, he and his team had become restless.

But that day news reached Campbell that a woman appeared to have been stabbed outside her home a few miles away. He and a 同僚 went to the scene すぐに.

As he was leaving his office, he received a call from his boss, 探偵,刑事 長,指導者 Superintendent Brian Edwards.

Campbell 解任するs: 'He said: 'Have you heard anythi ng about this stabbing 出来事/事件?... 井戸/弁護士席, let me tell you something... there's a suggestion it's Jill Dando.'

Dando, of course, was the Holly Willoughby of her day, only more famous still. As the ultimate girl-next-door rather than an icy beauty, the nation took her to their hearts.

And the BBC couldn't get enough of Dando. Apart from her 正規の/正選手 slots on Crimewatch and the hugely popular travel programme Holiday, she was a 正規の/正選手 presenter of its prime-time news 公式発表s and even occasionally 現在のd Songs Of 賞賛する.

Campbell arrived in Gowan Avenue in Fulham, an 豊富な area of smart family homes, just as the 救急車 carrying the 団体/死体 of Jill 出発/死d. Desperate 成果/努力s had been made to save her, but she never stood a chance.

Within five minutes, Campbell's officers would discover a 解雇する/砲火/射撃d cartridge 事例/患者 on the doorstep and a 選び出す/独身 yellow 弾丸 which had passed through the 犠牲者's 長,率いる, 攻撃する,衝突する her 前線 door and fallen to the ground. This was not a knife attack, then ― Dando had died 即時に after 存在 発射 in the 長,率いる.

Nor was it a street 強盗 gone wrong. Jill's watch and jewellery had not been taken. They were 取引,協定ing with something far more unusual.

Officers collected several pieces of 証拠 from the scene, 含むing a fob and BMW 重要な, a yellow metal earring, a Russell & Bromley shopping 捕らえる、獲得する and contents, fish in a white plastic 捕らえる、獲得する, and a 黒人/ボイコット leather handbag.

Dismal 天候 追加するd to the challenges 直面するing the 殺人 squad that day. Campbell took 避難所 from the 霧雨 in the porch of a 隣人ing house, having ordered his team to cover the 前線 of the Dando house, the path and the road with plastic to stop その上の 証拠 汚染 or loss. He remembers wondering: 'How far could the 殺し屋 have got now?'

A 4半期/4分の1 of a century on, it is a question the world is still asking.

It is 25 years ago this week that Jill Dando, 37, was 殺人d on her doorstep after returning home from a morning shopping trip. I was in the Daily Mail newsroom that day. I remember the shock and 不信 の中で my 同僚s at the news broke.

And when it was 明らかにする/漏らすd hours later that she had died from a 選び出す/独身 射撃 負傷させる to the 長,率いる, those feelings only 強めるd. Who could have hated Jill, the nation's sweetheart, so much that they would kill her in such a 残虐な and ruthless fashion?

The appetite for news about the 事例/患者 was insatiable and さまざまな 殺人 動機s were 推測するd on. I 解任する a very 上級の 同僚 telling me: 'I'm not 利益/興味d in theories, I want to know who killed Jill Dando'. So did the whole of the Met ― and the country, I 解任する thinking at the time.

One man was 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d with and 罪人/有罪を宣告するd of the 殺人. Barry George, a celebrity-obsessed serial stalker and fantasist who had already served a 刑務所,拘置所 宣告,判決 for 試みる/企てるd 強姦, lived 近づく Dando in Fulham at the time. He was 設立する 有罪の of the 殺人,大当り at the Old Bailey in July 2001. But his life 宣告,判決 was later quashed on 控訴,上告 and at the end of his 2008 retrial, George was sensationally 設立する not 有罪の.

His 無罪放免 saw the return of the guessing game by 共謀 理論家s, amateur sleuths and rent-a-引用する ex 探偵,刑事s as to who killed her and why. 未解決の 殺人s leave a 無効の that, 特に in the internet 時代, is often filled with far-fetched theories.

So will the 殺人 ― now in what the Met calls an 'inactive 段階' with no new leads nor 法廷の 証拠 to work on ―ever be solved?

Campbell has strong 見解(をとる)s about the type of 違反者/犯罪者 responsible. After 主要な the Dando 調査, he went on to reach the 階級 of 探偵,刑事 長,指導者 Superintendent and 長,率いるd up Scotland Yard's 殺人 squad.

'On reflection, I いつかs think Jill herself became almost an abstract part of the 殺人,' he tells me. 'Her profile, the news stories, the 'noise', all detracted from her as 犠牲者. Everyone thought they knew her, so many then believed they knew who killed her, or who was likely responsible.

'Jill as a person was lost in the 演劇 of it all. Barry George became the 焦点(を合わせる) of the 事例/患者. But as you and I know, it's Jill's life which 要求するs 解任するing.'

Born in Weston-最高の-損なう in 1961, Jill had followed her father and brother into 地元の newspaper journalism. Her onscreen 可能性のある, however, was obvious.

After stints in 地域の news broadcasting in the South-West, her big break (機の)カム in 1988 when she started 現在のing the BBC's hourly 国家の 公式発表s. In 1993 she was cho sen to host the prime-time travel programme, Holiday.

Two years later, she took on the same 役割 at Crimewatch, and in 1997 テレビ視聴者s 投票(する)d her BBC Personality of the Year. She would 現在の the programme 42 times before 悲劇 struck and she became the story rather than the 物語を話す人/作家.

She was an A-名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) 星/主役にする, with a 負かす/撃墜する-to-earth manner which endeared her to millions. She was also a devout Baptist, and had lived with her cousin Judith in Southfields, a 静かな South-West London 郊外, before moving to her own house in Gowan Avenue.

Jill bore more than a passing resemblance to Princess Diana, who was the same age, but unlike the Princess, her 私的な life was 静める and ordinary. In November 1997 she had been introduced by a 相互の friend to Alan Farthing, a 顧問 gynaecologist at a London hospital.

They became engaged in January 1999 and were 始める,決める to marry that September.

As Campbell puts it: 'It truly was a death without 平易な 推論する/理由. The 大多数 of 殺人s have straightforward 建設するs, and 探偵,刑事s are able to 転換 quickly from identifying the 動機 to the 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う.'

Even a reward of £100,000 申し込む/申し出d by the Mail at the time failed to tempt anyone from the 暗黒街 to 知らせる upon the conspirators. 'It was the dog that didn't bark,' Campbell once told me, paraphrasing Sherlock Holmes.

as sensationally found not guilty.

The 殺人 武器 has never been 設立する (some 探偵,刑事s think it was 捨てるd in the nearby Thames) but 法廷の examination of the 爆撃する 事例/患者ing and 弾丸 at the scene 示唆するs it was a 'smooth bore' 9mm handgun, which had either been 修正するd from a starting ピストル, or some other 反動的なd 武器.

It seemed that only one person knew why Jill Dando had died. And that was the man who had been seen 逃げるing along Gowan Avenue.

There have been (人命などを)奪う,主張するs over the years that Jill had been killed on the orders of a besotted ロシアの ギャング(個々), whose 前進するs she had 拒絶するd while filming an episode of Holiday in Cyprus.

There was a suggestion that an obsessed policeman who had appeared on Crimewatch pulled the 誘発する/引き起こす. And a (人命などを)奪う,主張する that the 暗殺者 was a woman dressed as a man.

A tip-off that Jill had fallen foul of the 悪名高い Adams 罪,犯罪 family was 診察するd and 割引d. So, too, a (人命などを)奪う,主張する she was killed on the orders of another 悪名高い 暗黒街 人物/姿/数字, Kenneth Noye.

Then there was the (人命などを)奪う,主張する that Jill was 殺人d on the orders of the Serbian 将軍 and 暗黒街 boss ?eljko Ra?natovic, better known as Arkan.

In April 1999, British 軍用機s were taking part in the Nato 爆破 of Yugoslavia ーするために stop the 民族の 洗浄するing of Albanians by Serbian 軍隊s in Kosovo.

Earlier that month, Jill had 前線d a BBC1 broadcast 控訴,上告ing for 基金s to help the 難民s. Two days before her death, the (警察,軍隊などの)本部 of the Serbian 同等(の) of the BBC was 攻撃する,衝突する by a Nato ミサイル, 殺人,大当り 17 staff.

Today Campbell is dismissive of the Serbian theory, which was given 新たにするd impetus this week with a (人命などを)奪う,主張する by a passing 運転者 that the man he had seen running away from the Dando 殺人 scene bore a resemblance to a Serbian 暗殺者 called Milorad Ulemek.

Campbell is unconvinced. 'To me, the 殺人 had the hallmarks of the loner 事実上の/代理 because of a political 動機づけ, 怒り/怒る, or just an obsessive personality,' he says. 'The 合理的な/理性的な for the gangland theory, the ロシアのs, the セルビア人s, the Adams, anyone from Crimewatch, was just never viable.

'I wrote in my personal 公式文書,認めるs, in earliest weeks, that I considered the 殺人,大当り to be the work of the loner or the obsessive. Many months later I 記録,記録的な/記録するd that I still 恐れるd the loner or an ill man was responsible.

'Twenty-five years later, there's still nothing from the 広大な 犯罪の 網状組織s. No one 現れるing. So it must have been a loner, or at least someone 事実上の/代理 on their own 率先. That I feel sure of.'

The 弾道学の 証拠 and 報告(する)/憶測 結論するd that the 事例/患者ing (cartridge 事例/患者) 設立する at the 殺人 scene was a 9mm 'short'. There are two types of 9mm 弾薬/武器. The 'short' and the 'parabellum'. The 条件 relate to the length of the 事例/患者ing, while the 直径 (9mm) is the same.

The 'short' has a 17mm 事例/患者ing length and a 'parabellum' 一連の会議、交渉/完成する has a 19mm 事例/患者ing.

The 9mm 'parabellum' 一連の会議、交渉/完成する is the one used, 国祭的な, by the 軍の and police. The 9mm 'short', which killed Jill, is いっそう少なく powerful and 発射する/解雇するs 弾丸s at subsonic 速度(を上げる).

The cartridge bore 'crimping' scratches where a pointed 道具 had been used, かもしれない to 強化する its 支配する on the 弾丸. This was not the 武器 of a professional 暗殺者. Nor was the 選び出す/独身 発射 the modus operandi of someone who had been 雇うd to 確実にする a 確かな kill. Seasoned hitmen always 治める at least two 発射s ― the いわゆる '二塁打 tap'.

Far from 存在 a professional 攻撃する,衝突する, Campbell believes the Dando 殺人 was amateurish.

'The approach in 幅の広い daylight, unmasked, un-gloved ― and walking away? A 選び出す/独身 弾丸, leaving 証拠 of 事例/患者ing, and, remarkably and importantly, the 場所. That was always 重要な. Jill was visiting 29 Gowan Avenue, just by chance, her visit was 無作為の. It had not been pre-planned.'

Painstaking examination of CCTV (映画の)フィート数 明らかにする/漏らすd Dando left her fiance's house at around 10am and drove to a garage on the A4, where she bought 石油 and milk. She then visited a shopping 商店街 in Hammersmith, calling in at three shops ― Ryman's, Dixons and The Link ― before 長,率いるing 支援する に向かって Fulham.

There, she 選ぶd up some Dover 単独の at 対処する, a fishmonger's on the Fulham Road, which she was planning to cook for her fiance Alan for dinner that night.

Her 決定/判定勝ち(する) to call in at her own home appears to have been made on the 刺激(する) of the moment. 'That was why the 調査 turned to the loner,' says Campbell. 'A 殺人 without 推論する/理由 frequently has at its 核心 a 殺し屋 who 平等に can 供給する no 合理的な/理性的な 推論する/理由.'

Aside from Jill's two 即座の 隣人s, six other people 報告(する)/憶測d seeing a man of 早期に middle age w ith a 'swarthy or Mediterranean 外見' in Gowan Avenue on the evening and morning before the 殺人. A man of 類似の description was also seen in 対処する at the same time as Jill.

Five years ago, I caught up with Barry George in Ireland, where he has lived for many years.

He was a shambling, dishevelled 耐える of a man, barely 含む/封じ込めるd by a dark 控訴 and overcoat.

In the troubled world of the only man ever 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d with the 罪,犯罪, time appeared to have stood still.

He 削減(する) a pathetic 人物/姿/数字 rather than one of any menace, as was 申し立てられた/疑わしい by police and 検察官,検事s at the time. In these circumstances, is it wrong to consider him the 'other 犠牲者' in Britain's most sensational modern 殺人 事例/患者?

Now 64, George talked that day with passion about his continued 'fight for 司法(官)' and the 当局' ぐずぐず残る 疑問s over his innocence. 疑問s which in 2013 saw the High 法廷,裁判所 rubber-stamp 決定/判定勝ち(する)s by 連続する 政府s to 辞退する him a 選び出す/独身 penny of 補償(金) for the eight years he spent behind 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業s.

補償(金) is only 認めるd when the 法廷,裁判所 quashes a 有罪の判決 because a new fact has 現れるd to show beyond reasonable 疑問 that the applicant did not commit the offence.

'How can you be acquitted 全員一致で by 裁判官 and 陪審/陪審員団 ― which means you (回復する) innocent status ― but then get told you are not innocent enough?' he asked me.

'How more innocent than innocent can a person be?'

Hamish Campbell does not 悔いる the 起訴 of Barry George. 'George was a 罪人/有罪を宣告するd sex 違反者/犯罪者 [he had several 前科s for 性の 強襲,強姦 and 試みる/企てるd 強姦]. He was a prolific stalker of 女性(の) strangers for years. He accosted 非常に/多数の women in the street and outside their homes. He was violent. The 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) goes on. He had the 接近 to 小火器 ― and had owned some ― and he was fixated on celebrity.'

The last 'periodic' review of the Dando 殺人 was 行為/行うd by the Met in 2018.

This week it said in a 声明 that officers would consider any new (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) 申し込む/申し出d to the 軍隊 to 決定する whether it '代表するd a new and 現実主義の line of 調査'.

Campbell is 悲観的な, however, about there ever 存在 継続している 司法(官) in the 事例/患者. 'I think the 見込み is 極端に remote. 事実 証拠 is 要求するd to 証明する the 事例/患者 now. With the passage of time, 証拠 would be 限られた/立憲的な to producing the 武器,' he said.

'身元 証拠 is no good now. Asking any of the 証言,証人/目撃するs who saw a person in Gowan Avenue to now come 今後 and look at any other person to make an 身元確認,身分証明 would be 事実上 impossible. How could they? It couldn't be relied on as reliable or 保証するd. A 自白 would be very ありそうもない to 納得させる anyone, and would 要求する 重要な corroboration.'

Desperate 成果/努力s to 生き返らせる Jill destroyed 潜在的に 決定的な 法廷の 証拠.

'There was no 疑問, in our 見解(をとる) at the time, that the 罪,犯罪 scene was ひどく 汚染するd by the 救急車 緊急 services,' he says.

'There were some eight people 現在の, which 含むd three doctors. The 可能性のある 汚染 of shoe prints, 着せる/賦与するing fibres, デオキシリボ核酸 cross 汚染, resuscitation 試みる/企てるs ― on someone 明確に dead ― are all features which 与える/捧げる to 証拠 破壊 and 処分.

'Of course, it was all unintentional. And the 役割 of 保存するing a life over 保存するing 証拠 is the constant 審議.

'However, she was dead, and I believe she could have been 宣言するd dead at the scene, as with so many other 事例/患者s. And the scene then 調印(する)d for examination.

'Her [celebrity] status was, I believe, a factor in 試みる/企てるing resuscitation, which was futile.'

Some 140 miles west of London, there is a 思い出の品 of the love and 尊敬(する)・点 everyone had for Jill Dando. It is there, at a crematorium on the 郊外s of Weston-最高の-損なう, that her final 残り/休憩(する)ing place is 位置を示すd.

She is interred with her mother ジーンズ, who died in 1986, and barely half a dozen 列/漕ぐ/騒動s from her father Jack, who died 老年の 91, a 10年間 after his daughter ― her death broke his heart.

It is a lovingly tended 陰謀(を企てる), bedecked with still-vibrant daffodils, a マリファナ of red roses, 側面に位置するd on both 味方するs by clusters of yellow chrysanthemums.

Inscribed upon polished granite is a simple dedication: 'Your beautiful smile, that 影響を受けない elegance, a 本物の 星/主役にする, we love you.'

Twenty five years have passed since Jill Dando's 残虐な 殺人, but those words still (犯罪の)一味 true.
