Toby Carvery 法案s itself as the 'home of the roast' - where Sunday roasts are done '適切に'.

It was a filthy February day when I 長,率いるd to the Home of the Roast in 価値(がある)ing. The very bones of me were 冷淡な - ideal circumstances for a 支えるing feast.

It was my first-ever?Toby Carvery?visit, but many friends I 尊敬(する)・点 were, if not evangelical, certainly 温かく affectionate about Toby's Sunday roasts.?

It was time to put this British 会・原則 through its paces.

In the 利益/興味 of journalistic rigour, I had ーするつもりであるd to order a 'starter' of pigs in 一面に覆う/毛布s. But as soon as I について言及するd I planned on the carvery, my waiter 知らせるd me that the 'carvery deck' was around the corner and to 列 there for my serving. As a carvery na?f, I did as I was told.

My dining companion ordered mac 'n' cheese, which was 配達するd and 破壊するd by the time I returned with my laden plate. (They had schlepped out in a tempest to the restaurant with me, so I didn't admonish them. Also, they were 10 years old.)

When I made it through the winding 列 to the 'deck' I was told to choose three meats. Wanting to make it to pudding, I 限られた/立憲的な myself to slow-cooked beef and pork loin. I associate canteen-style buffets with the slop they served in the mess テント on M*A*S*H, so I fretted a little.

According to Katrina, the Yorkies 'were the size of a sombrero' and an admirable effort

によれば Katrina, the Yorkies 'were the size of a sombrero' and an admirable 成果/努力?

I needn't have: The beef was tender. I slathered it in English 情熱 and wondered how they'd managed to keep a soft, 産する/生じるing texture for meat sunbathing under a heat lamp. A form of wizardry.

The pork loin, 式のs, erred に向かって what the Scots evocatively call 'chugh' - leathery meat. I had forgotten the apple sauce in the tumult of the 'carvery deck' - a 致命的な error.?An undignified end for the poor pig.

The roasties had the damp kiss of the microwave, but their 内部の had the 批判的な 'smoosh' factor one needs from a Sabbath spud. Yorkies were the size of a sombrero. Though greasier than ideal, I was impressed - crispy exterior, pancake-y 内部の, 事実 but not stodgy. Admirable.

For her pudding, Katrina opted for apple and blackberry crumble, served with soft serve ice cream. She wanted 'to warm [her] insides as ballast against the squall outdoors'

For her pudding, Katrina 選ぶd for apple and blackberry 崩壊する, served with soft serve ice cream. She 手配中の,お尋ね者 'to warm [her] insides as ballast against the squall outdoors'

Dessert was apple and blackberry 崩壊する. I 手配中の,お尋ね者 warm stewed fruit 栄冠を与えるd with hot golden がれき, to warm my insides as ballast against the squall outside. And so it 証明するd - a school dinner favourite, done perfectly 井戸/弁護士席.

Now, a moan. There's a Monty Python sketch in which a waiter, distraught his 顧客 has been given a dirty fork, goes into 増加するing paroxysms of horror at letting the diner 負かす/撃墜する. Reader, that waiter would spontaneously combust if he saw the glassware at Toby Carvery. I'm not Lady Muck, but I do prefer a clean tumbler.

判決:?Crucially, Toby's Carvery is not 試みる/企てるing a swizz - £13.99 for a mountain of 井戸/弁護士席-用意が出来ている meat, endless veg, and as many roasties as you can pile on your plate. The ambience may be 欠如(する)ing - it's dining without flair - but if you're after a good 料金d, you're quids in.?

PROS:?Flavoursome meat, 慰安ing food, 山地の puddings, value for money.

CONS:?All the atmosphere of an airport lounge, 列ing for food, dirty glassware.

If you've swerved Michelin-星/主役にする 設立s in your time for 恐れる of tedious poncery, The Harwood 武器 will not 脅す you.?

Definitely 'gastropub' in feel, thoughtful touches 示唆する a 熟考する/考慮するd casualness - scuffed, leather-bound 議長,司会を務めるs, antique pine (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs. There is a hint of a 追跡(する)ing 宿泊する 主題 that stops short of going 十分な, fusty Balmoral.

That's 反映するd in the menu, which is ひどく game-orientated, and 申し込む/申し出s gently remixed 見解/翻訳/版s of time-honoured British 代替要員,物s. We're not talking arty 'deconst ructions' or weird-for-the-sake-of-weird 革新, just わずかに more creative takes on dishes that - 井戸/弁護士席, you can order at Toby Carvery.

Ok, not my first course, in fairness. A starter of 取調べ/厳しく尋問するd red deer tongue, strafed with 減少(する)s of quince paste and beetroot doesn't 叫び声をあげる 'British 慰安 food.'

But oh, let me tell you what a time I had eating it. Meat perfectly seared on the outside, with a superlatively 産する/生じるing texture inside. Smokey, whisper-soft meat was 削減(する) through with the sweetness of the quince and beetroot. At the 危険 of sounding salacious, of all the tongue I've had in my time, I didn't 推定する/予想する a deer's to enter the 最高の,を越す ten.

Then, to the main event - Iberian Pork with Jowl, with apple sauce, Yorkie, roasties, broccoli and carrot. Toby Carvery doesn't tell you what farm its meat comes from, but The Harwood 武器 does - and I have every 推論する/理由 to 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う my pig had a gorgeous life 支援する at Whitley Manor, 裁判官ing by how succulent yet lean it tasted. 略章s of whisper-pink pork 解散させるd in my mouth.

The Harwood Arms main: Iberian Pork with Jowl, with apple sauce, Yorkie, roasties, broccoli and carrot. The pork is sourced from Whitley Manor farm. Katrina said: 'I have every reason to suspect my pig had a gorgeous life back on Whitley Manor, judging by how succulent yet lean it tasted'

As to the Yorkie??It was pretty good. Nothing rapturous. Yorkies are never the most flavoursome part of the roast, but it was just what you needed from a 味方する dish that is essentially a 運送/保菌者 for other flavours, designed to complement one another.

This is where the dish 勝利d. Every 構成要素 存在するd in symphonic (許可,名誉などを)与える with the other - the apple sauce made the pork sing, and the roasties 行為/法令/行動するd as a carbohydrate conductor that brought the whole mouthful together.

This was the platonic ideal of roasts. Can a roast dinner be elevated? You betcha.

I did not 特に need nor want dessert, but, one-woman Woodward and Bernstein that I am, I ate it to bring you the culinary scoop. Apple parfait with hazelnut and shortbread.?

Cherub-fat orbs of fresh apple cream, 削減(する) through with delicate hazelnut ice cream and 薄焼きパン/素焼陶器 that snapped so crisply it could moonlight as a twig. 'This is what angels eat for breakfast,' I moaned. I had 設立する a pudding so delectable it would be 価値(がある) 苦しむing the 運命/宿命 the kids in Willy Wonka 耐える for stealing 甘いs.

Reader - the meal was plentiful. I am truthful when I say I had to let my belt out two notches.

Which is my only major (民事の)告訴 about Harwood. You have to have three courses on a Sunday, and you have to 株 the roast between two. Both caveats seem 不当な - a roast is a hefty meal, and I loathe 存在 overfull. Also, why should you have to have a companion with you to enjoy a handsome meal just because it's the Lord's Day?

It's a silly prejudice, in my 注目する,もくろむs. I'm sure there's a justification 関係のある to covers and 総計費s, but it sits 貧しく with me.

判決: When you 支払う/賃金 over the 半端物s for a meal, the hope is, as much as anything, you're 支払う/賃金ing for an experience. Toby Carvery is food as background noise - an old sitcom episode you put on for 慰安 but also to talk over.

At The Harwood 武器, food is the main event. The pub satiates hunger, yes, but more than that, they create gorgeous memories. I couldn't afford to eat like this with any regularity, but if your 続けざまに猛撃する stretches to it, it's 価値(がある) the splurge.

PROS:?Spectacularly delicious food, laidback atmosphere, pudding of celestial 質

CONS:?Seems churlish to 主張する on three courses, and having to dine with a guest, at these prices
