It's a red ¸üÈÄ that's played a ½ÅÍ×¤Ê Ìò³ä in Scottish and English ²¦¼¼¤Î history and now... the ÀС¿ÅêÀФ¹¤ë's coming »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë home to a new ¡ò27 million museum!

What is it about a ¸üÈÄ of red sandstone that¡Çs ÀâÆÀ¤¹¤ëd a hard-°µÎϡʤò¤«¤±¤ë¡Ëd Scottish ²ñµÄ to spend ¡ò27 million on it?

That¡Çs the sum Í׵᤹¤ëd for a new museum in Perth.

It opens on March 30 and will be ½½Ê¬¤Ê of Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ing stuff. But the main ¿äÏÀ¤¹¤ë¡¿Íýͳ it¡Çs been built is to house the ÀС¿ÅêÀФ¹¤ë Of Scone.

The ¸üÈÄ is also known as The ÀС¿ÅêÀФ¹¤ë Of ±¿Ì¿. It has been used in the ºÜ´§¡Ê¼°¡Ë¡¿Â¨°Ì¡Ê¼°¡Ë of ·¯¼çs since 1307 and Scottish ones for centuries before that.

Now the ÀС¿ÅêÀФ¹¤ë, which used to be in Edinburgh?¾ë, is coming home. There are many romantic rumours about its origins ¡½ one traces it »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë to the Ä´½ñ¤ò¤È¤ë¡¿Í½Ì󤹤ë of Genesis.

The museum's star artefact will be the Stone Of Destiny (above), which has been used in the coronation of monarchs for centuries

But more prosaic 3D imaging ¾ÚÌÀ¤¹¤ëd that it was indeed quarried ¶á¤Å¤¯ the ¸ÅÂå¤Î village of Scone, a mile or so from Perth.

Once in the new museum, which will be housed in the old city hall, the ÀС¿ÅêÀФ¹¤ë will be ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê to see, but you will have to Ä´½ñ¤ò¤È¤ë¡¿Í½Ì󤹤ë a slot.

The ³«»Ï is a chance to ¾Î»¾¤¹¤ë the attractions of Perth and Perthshire. ÃÏÍý³ØŪ¤Ë, it¡Çs like a big heart in the centre of Scotland, an Ê¿°×¤Ê ±¿Æ° from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

It¡Çs usually Â¥¿Ê¤¹¤ëd as ¡Æthe gateway to the Highlands ¡½ a ÅļˤΠexpanse of low hills, lochs and rivers and (for Scotland) a Èæ³Ó¤·¤Æ ´¥Á礷¤¿¡¤Æü¾È¤ê¤Î and ²º¤ä¤«¤Ê µ¤¸õ.

Start at Scone Palace itself, where the ÀС¿ÅêÀФ¹¤ë was first used to ±É´§¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ë a king, Kenneth MacAlpin, in 843.

The palace is a handsome pile, rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style, but with the ½é¤á¤Î abbey chapel on ƤµÄ¤¹¤ë Hill above it.

It does very °æ¸Í¡¿ÊÛ¸î»ÎÀÊ out of events such as the Scottish Game Fair in July. You can stay in a ÊúÍʤ¹¤ë apartment and have the ¹¤¤ÃϽê to yourself if the Earl of Mansfield and family are not in ½»µï.

I ±Ø¡¿ÇÛÃÖ¤¹¤ëd myself at The Taybank in arty Dunkeld, built on land Ëä¤áΩ¤Æ¤ëd from the Tay when Thomas Telford put his ¶¶¡ÊÅϤ·¤ò¤¹¤ë¡Ë over it in 1809.

It¡ Çs a pubby hotel with terrific food by Gemma, its own sauna and riverside ¡Æbeach¡Ç.

It¡Çs dog-friendly, too. I walked ÃÏÍë to Birnam, on the opposite bank, where an ¸ÅÂå¤Î sycamore is the last »Ä; of the ¹Âç¤Ê¡¿Â¿¿ô¤Î¡¿½ÅÍ×¤Ê forest that so spooked Macbeth in Shakespeare¡Çs play.

Centuries of È豃 have left the city with ȳ¶â streets, riverside walks, cafes and parks.

It was once the »ñËÜ¡¿¼óÅÔ, and with its magi cal ÀС¿ÅêÀФ¹¤ë Of ±¿Ì¿ »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë, Perth will once again feel like the very heart of Scotland.
