Shropshire thrills! Lose yourself in the wonders of a 郡 指名するd one of the 最高の,を越す 目的地s in the WORLD

The devil may have the best tunes, but he’s lost 所有権 of the finest seat. I’m perched on a 厚板 of 石/投石する on a craggy tor known as the Devil’s 議長,司会を務める.

Legend has it that the old grump was carrying these very 石/投石するs, which (不足などを)補う the Shropshire Stiperstones, in his apron.

The story goes that he stopped for a breather, and 敏速に dropped them all.

To the east is the moorland 高原 of Long Mynd.

In the foreground are the rolling hills of Ratlinghope, sheep dotting green fields with curlews 総計費.

These Shropshire Hills, within an Area of 優れた Natural Beauty, have stayed 大部分は 不変の for millennia.

Little wonder, perhaps, that the 郡 of Shropshire was recently 指名するd one of the ten 全世界の 目的地s to watch by the 協会 of British Travel スパイ/執行官s.

My base is the 栄えるing market town of Ludlow. More than 70 years ago, the poet John Betjeman 述べるd it as ‘probably the loveliest town in England’ ― and I tend to agree.

Ludlow is 中途の between Shrewsbury to the north and Hereford to the south, and about 15 miles from the Welsh 国境.

まっただ中に the many blue-plaqued or 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)d buildings are modern, upmarket delis, 同様に as chic homeware shops and cafes.

I’m staying at The Feathers, which has a 罰金, 木材/素質d Tudor facade. Downstairs it’s all cosy 支持を得ようと努めるd panelling and friendly service, and generous (抱擁する) meals.

Upstairs the bedrooms are more modern and 極端に comfortable with 広大な, luxurious beds. It’s a good HQ for a few days’ 探検 of the town and the surrounding countryside.

I’m joined by ツバメ, who runs Shropshire 小旅行するs. After the Stiperstones, we visit Much Wenlock, about 20 miles north-east of Ludlow.

Here, ツバメ tells me of Dr William Penny Brookes, who lived 地元で and was a 会社/堅い 信奉者 in the 利益s of 演習.

奮起させるd by his surroundings, he formed the Wenlock Olympian Society in 1850, a forerunner for the Olympics and still going strong.

Its 現在の 大統領,/社長 is Olympic 三段跳び gold medallist Jonathan Edwards.

What with making the prestigious '最高の,を越す ten 目的地 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)' these are golden times for the West Midlands 郡.
