TSB has ÌäÂ꡿ȯ¹Ô¤¹¤ëd an ¶ÛµÞ¤Î scam ·Ù¹ð, after the bank ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë that a third of ¹¹ðs on Facebook Marketplace could be µ¶¤Î.
The bank is ´«¤á¤ëing ¾ÃÈñ¼Ôs to Èò¤±¤ë making online ¹ØÆþ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës on Facebook Marketplace so they don't Íî¤Á¤ë µ¾À·¼Ô.
The bank's º¾µ½ team ¸«ËÜd 100 Facebook Marketplace ÃÏ°Ì¡¤Ç¤Ì¿¤¹¤ës ? ´Þ¤àing cars, watches, games consoles, ¶õµ¤¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë fryers and handbags ? and ÀÜ¿¨¤¹¤ëd the ÈÎÇä¿Ís to ·èÄꤹ¤ë whether the items were genuinely for sale, or scams.
The º¾µ½ ÀìÌç²Ès ·ëÏÀ¤¹¤ëd that 34 ¥Ñ¡¼¥»¥ó¥È of the listings were µ¶¤Î ¹¹ðs because the ÈÎÇä¿Í used ºöά ¤¢¤ê¤Õ¤ì¤¿ to ¹ØÆþ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë º¾µ½ ÈȺá¤Îs.
Beware: TSB has ·Ù¹ð¤¹¤ëd that ¾è¤êʪs, phones and shoes and Ã夻¤ë¡¿ÉêÍ¿¤¹¤ës were Ūd the most by scammers by ÍÆÀÑ¡¿ÍÆÎÌ in 2023?
For example, these ÈÎÇä¿Ís directed TSB º¾µ½ ÀìÌç²Ès to µ¶¤Î websites, ¼Âह¤ëd to µö¤¹ ¸«²ò¡Ê¤ò¤È¤ë¡Ëing of a n item in person and ¼ûÍס¦Í׵᤹¤ëd Á°¿Ê¤¹¤ëd ÎÁ¶âs.
TSB also discovered items advertised as 'brand new' for hundreds of ³¤±¤¶¤Þ¤ËÌԷ⤹¤ës ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ than their real ¾®Çä price, which can also be a tell-tale Ä´°õ¤¹¤ë of a scam.?
During the Ä´ºº, TSB discovered an iPhone 13, ̾Êí¡Ê¤ËºÜ¤»¤ë¡Ë¡¿É½¡Ê¤Ë¤¢¤²¤ë¡Ëd as 'brand new' for just ¡ò84 - when the Apple website sells this model for ¡ò599. On ÀÜ¿¨¤¹¤ëing the ÈÎÇä¿Í, TSB's º¾µ½ ÀìÌç²È was directed to a scam website to make the »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ë.
TSB also ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë a 2016 Audi Q3 advertised for ¡ò6,000. The ÈÎÇä¿Í ¼Âह¤ëd to answer any questions and directed TSB's º¾µ½ ÀìÌç²È to an email ±éÀâ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿½»½ê.?
Upon searching the email ±éÀâ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿½»½ê, TSB discovered it had been Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬d as part of a car º¾µ½ scam on a community website in 2023.
Other items ´Þ¤àd a Ninja ¶õµ¤¡¿¸øɽ¤¹¤ë Fryer, ̾Êí¡Ê¤ËºÜ¤»¤ë¡Ë¡¿É½¡Ê¤Ë¤¢¤²¤ë¡Ëd as brand new at ¡ ò65 when the real ¾®Çä price is ¡ò249. TSB was directed to a µ¶¤Î ¾ì½ê¡¿°ÌÃÖ upon enquiring.
A spokesperson for Meta, which owns Facebook, said: 'With tens of millions of people using our apps daily in the UK, we recognise our important Ìò³ä in ¼è¤êÁȤàing the »º¶È-wide ÌäÂ꡿ȯ¹Ô¤¹¤ë of online ¹ØÆþ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë scams and have systems in place to Éõº¿¤¹¤ë scams.?
'Facebook Marketplace is a Ãϸµ¤Î ²ñ¹ç¡¤²ñ¤¦ up and collection service so we don't Íưפˤ¹¤ë »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës or shipping, but scammers °Î¶È¡¿ÍøÍѤ¹¤ë this by taking conversations off our ÃÅ¡¦¹ËÎΡ¦¸øÌós where we can't »Ü¹Ô¤¹¤ë.?

Facebook Marketplace ¸½ºß¡¿°ìÈÌ¤Ë accounts for 73 ¥Ñ¡¼¥»¥ó¥È of all ¹ØÆþ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë º¾µ½ »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ôs at TSB ? and remains the biggest driver of º¾µ½ by ÍÆÀÑ¡¿ÍÆÎÌ.

It ȼ¤¦¡¿´Ø¤ï¤ëd 11 of the world's biggest tech companies Ä´°õ a voluntary 'Online º¾µ½ ¼Ú¤êÀڤ롿·û¾Ï' which saw them ÀÀÌó¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë to take ³èÆ°¡¿ÀïÆ® to Êݸ¤ë their »ÈÍѼÔs against online scams and to Éõº¿¤¹¤ë µ¶¤Î Äɲ乤ës and fraudulent content ±Æ¶Á¤¹¤ë¡¿´¶¾ðing their »ÈÍѼÔs.
Meta, which owns and operates Facebook has Ä´°õ¤¹¤ëd the ¼Ú¤êÀڤ롿·û¾Ï. As the ¼Ú¤êÀڤ롿·û¾Ï is voluntary, there are no ·ºÈ³¡¤È³Â§s if companies are ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë to not be doing enough in line with the ¾ò·ï.
TSB is now ´«¤á¤ëing social ¥Þ¥¹¥³¥ß companies to ÇÛ㤹¤ë on ¤«¤«¤ï¤ê¹ç¤¤s in the À¯ÉÜ's Online º¾µ½ ¼Ú¤êÀڤ롿·û¾Ï.
Matt Hepburn, º¾µ½ spokesperson at TSB, said: 'You wouldn't shop at a supermarket if a third of the items were stale or µ¶Â¤¤Î ? so the same should ŬÍѤ¹¤ë to Facebook Marketplace, where you could have a one in three chance of ¸ºß scammed when »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing online.
'Social ¥Þ¥¹¥³¥ß companies really must ¹Ô°Ù¡¿Ë¡Îá¡¿¹ÔÆ°¤¹¤ë on their ¤«¤«¤ï¤ê¹ç¤¤s under the À¯ÉÜ's Online º¾µ½ ¼Ú¤êÀڤ롿·û¾Ï by ¶ÛµÞ¤Ë ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ing up their ÃÅ¡¦¹ËÎΡ¦¸øÌós ? ½üµî¤¹¤ëing scam adverts is a good first ¼Â¸³¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë.'
