I lost £100k to '安全な account' scam... Tide 認める failings but will only 支払う/賃金 me 支援する half

Jamie* is used to 取引,協定ing with 抱擁する sums of money in his day 職業 running his own 商売/仕事.?

So when he received a call 説 his 商売/仕事 accounts had been 妥協d, he moved quickly to 確実にする his 基金s were 安全な.

Instead he lost £100,000 to 犯罪のs in a '安全な account scam', where fraudsters steal a person's money by getting them to move it to another bank account that they 支配(する)/統制する.

These scams are 高度に sophisticated and can dupe unsuspecting 顧客s in a myriad of ways, 含むing the cloning of phone numbers.

Jamie, who has asked for his 指名する to be changed, has been left reeling at what he feels is a 欠如(する) of checks and balances made by his banking provider Tide and how it subsequently dealt with the scam.

Two weeks after the scam, Jamie now only has a 部分 of the money 支援する. He tells This is Money how the scammers managed to 接近 his cash through this s ophisticated 詐欺 and how he feels that Tide left him in the lurch.

The '安全な account' scam

At the end of January, Jamie received a call from someone (人命などを)奪う,主張するing to be working in 合同 with a major bank 説 they had identified 潜在的に fraudulent 処理/取引s on his account.

After checking the number, he 設立する it to be the 本物の 財政上の Services 補償(金) 計画/陰謀 (FSCS) number and continued the conversation.

Believing it to be a 合法的 call, Jamie told the scammers he held accounts with five other banks at which point the 報知係 said he would liaise with his 相当するものs in anti-詐欺.

'I was thinking they must be working together, I 設立する that strangely 安心させるing,' he told This is Money.

Scammers clone 本物の numbers from 会・原則s to lend an 空気/公表する of legitimacy to their 冷淡な calls, which means that even if you take all the necessary 警戒s you could be duped.

What Jamie didn't know at the time was that the FSCS does not 冷淡な-call 顧客s and banks very rarely 行為/法令/行動する in lockstep when there have been instances of 詐欺 across a number of accounts.

A few minutes later Jamie received text messages from each of his banks with an FSCS 言及/関連 number below 以前 合法的 messages from the 会・原則s in question.

From there, the 報知係 told Jamie that because he had 非常に/多数の accounts with Tide it would make the most sense for it to 扱う the 事例/患者 and he would soon receive a call from a withheld number as Tide don't have a direct 直面するing 顧客 service number.

Indeed, Tide - which 申し込む/申し出s 商売/仕事 accounts - is not 公式に a bank, as it doesn't have a banking licence with the 財政上の 行為/行う 当局, which we explain in more 詳細(に述べる) below.

Jamie was passed の上に another scammer called Theodore who introduced himself as one of Tide's anti-詐欺 team who said he would send through a message on the app.

Jamie later realised it was something called a flash message, which is a notification that mimics a normal message and makes it seem as if you're receiving a message from your bank when it's in fact from the scammer.?

Crucially the notifications don't stay in your notifications so they can't be traced.

A 広報担当者 for the FSCS said: 'Sadly, it's all too 平易な for scammers to use the 詳細(に述べる)s of 合法的 organisations like FSCS to try and appear 本物の to their 犠牲者s. If we hear that our number is 存在 used fraudulently, we 報告(する)/憶測 it to our telecoms provider and 活動/戦闘 詐欺 すぐに.

I lost £100,000 in a 事柄 of hours

Theodore told Jamie that his Tide account had been 妥協d and he would need to 始める,決める up a new account with almost 同一の 指名するs to 移転 money into.

He also gave Jamie a URL to type into Google which took him to a webpage that he says was indistinguishable to Tide's. There, he was directed to type in a code 供給するd by the fraudster and the accounts that had been '始める,決める up' appeared.

?The level of sophistication and social 工学 behind this has truly 脅すd me

Jamie flagged that the sort codes were different to usual but was told Tide operates on a number of different 壇・綱領・公約s, which he later 設立する out to be untrue.

At this point the scammer already had a number of Jamie's 詳細(に述べる)s 含むing his mother's maiden 指名する, previous and 現在の 演説(する)/住所 and 最近の 処理/取引s. All of this meant that Jamie felt 確信して he was speaking with someone from the anti-詐欺 team and proceeded.

'He told me we'd 移転 the money over in small increments because if you do it one go, if it gets lost in the account 移住 過程, it can be difficult to trace.'

Jamie transferred £500 at a time and as it was leaving his 本物の Tide account, he could see the balance on the spoof website more or いっそう少なく 存在 updated in real time.

Over the course of a few hours, Jamie transferred £106,000 from three of his Tide accounts.

'During the 過程 the guy couldn't have been more relaxed. 明白に I'm 強調する/ストレスing out but not b ecause he's making me feel uncomfortable. I just want to 移転 and get out because of the (a)手の込んだ/(v)詳述する 支援する story.'

'Every 行う/開催する/段階 without any hesitation, the scammer knew the answer he knew page-by-page what the Tide interface looked like. He knew the inner workings of it and I didn't 登録(する) that it could be someone not from Tide.

'I 交渉する with people all day, I can usually smell when something's off. The level of sophistication and social 工学 behind this has truly 脅すd me.'

He also said he felt 安全な・保証する as there was 'no plausible 推論する/理由' any bank with 安全 would 許す £500 処理/取引s to a new payee if not 存在 orchestrated by the anti-詐欺 team.

He says that at no point were there any messages or 警告s to 示す that there was fraudulent activity on his account, にもかかわらず there 存在 hundreds of 処理/取引s.

Tide told This is Money it had 供給するd five 警告s to Jamie about 受取人 指名するs not matching the bank 詳細(に述べる)s, but he strenuously 否定するs this. Read below for their 十分な 返答.

Left in the lurch

The next day Jamie realised what had happened and after 報告(する)/憶測ing it to Tide, he said there was 'no 緊急' from Tide.

At one point, he told Tide that the scammer was planning on calling again and if there was anything he could say or do to help the 状況/情勢 or 跡をつける the scammer.

At another Jamie had the scammer on loudspeaker while calling Tide on a different phone. He says no 援助 was 来たるべき.

Nearly two days after the scam, Jamie discovered a 報告(する)/憶測 into the scam had only been とじ込み/提出するd some 40 hours after the scam, giving the 犯罪のs a 長,率いる start and little chance of the 基金s 存在 跡をつけるd.

After the scammers drained his Tide account, Jamie still had staff to 支払う/賃金 but thankfully he had cash in his 貯金 with another bank to 支払う/賃金 his staff, 請負業者s and his mortgage.

'Thankfully there was money in the background the scammers couldn't get it. If that wasn't the 事例/患者, I would have had 13 people that wouldn't have been paid. The 支配s would have started 落ちるing and feasibly I could have lost everything.'

Ten days on from the scam and Jamie still hadn't been told anything pertinent - instead told 経由で the app that Tide would 目的(とする) to r esolve it in 35 days.

'For a week I was 叫び声をあげるing into the abyss. It's your worst nightmare, losing that much money.'

By contrast his 地元の police 軍隊 had already advised Jamie that one of the accounts had already been traced, while Tide said there was no update.

Almost two weeks after the scam, Jamie was 接触するd by the (民事の)告訴s 決意/決議 経営者/支配人 who said Tide's 返答 'is not going to hinge on deflecting the failings of our own systems, which are self-evident given what's happened. It's plain that Tide should have stepped in to do more to 保護する your 基金s.'

Two weeks after scammers took over £100,000 of Jamie's money, he finally received a 返答 from Tide's (民事の)告訴s team.

Tide 認める that there had been '行方不明になるd 適切な時期s' to 妨げる the 出来事/事件 and that the activity on Jamie's account that day appear 'out of character'.

It 追加するd: 'Tide should have identified such a 重要な 容積/容量 of 処理/取引s to new payees as a pattern indicative of 詐欺.'

The team upheld his (民事の)告訴 but with the 決定的な caveat that there were 適切な時期s for Jamie to have noticed something was amiss.

Jamie therefore received just half of the 基金s he lost to the scammers, meaning he is £50,000 out of pocket.

Most 主要な high-street banks are 加盟国s of the 次第で変わる/派遣部隊 Reimbursment Model (CRM) code, which puts 対策 in place to (悪事,秘密などを)発見する and 妨げる authorised 押し進める 支払い(額) (APP) scams.

They also have a 義務 to reimburse 顧客s who have fallen 犠牲者 to an APP scam through no fault of their own.

However Tide isn't a 加盟国 and isn't a 登録(する)d bank, rather referring to itself as a '商売/仕事 財政上の 壇・綱領・公約'. While 規制するd by the 財政上の 行為/行う 当局 (FCA), it 申し込む/申し出s e-money accounts, 供給するd by PPS and 商売/仕事 bank accounts, 供給するd by ClearBank.

Tide 主張するd it was 'reasonable to 推定する/予想する that our members have some 認識/意識性 of '安全な account' scams given their prevalence, 追加するing that there had been plenty of in-app 警告s about a 増殖 of scams.?

They 追加するd that while the spoofing of phone number and texts were 納得させるing, 調整 between banking providers is '高度に unusual.'

Tide also told Jamie that he should have known the '安全な accounts' opened by the scammers were banks 井戸/弁護士席 outside of Tide and that their T&Cs 明確に 明言する/公表する who the providers are.

Even if Jamie was aware of this sophisticated type of scam and social 工学, crucially Tide 認める it should have done more to stop it.

As a result, Tide told Jamie that they both had 適切な時期s to recognise the 詐欺 and stop it and 義務/負債 should be 株d 平等に. Jamie has received £50,000 of the money 支援する.

Jamie 主張するs that 安全 議定書s have always been lax. High street banks have 割れ目d 負かす/撃墜する on new payees and 移転s in a 企て,努力,提案 to 戦闘 scams.

Jamie says there has '絶対 not' been the same 治療 on Tide: 'The irony of this is that one of the ways Tide markets to small 商売/仕事s is in 緩和する, convenience and 柔軟性. But there needs to be a 貿易(する) off with 安全. The 緩和する of transferring money is one of the 控訴,上告s of Tide.'

Since the scam however Tide has stopped Jamie from transferring money out of his account to an 存在するing payee - himself.

'This type of 詐欺 has the 可能性のある to wipe so many 商売/仕事s off the 地図/計画する by 存在 a 犠牲者 of 本物の 罪,犯罪. It seems so 不公平な that your 評判, credit 記録,記録的な/記録する, ability to 完全にする 事業/計画(する)s could be jeopardised by it.

The next 選択 for Jamie is to take his 事例/患者 to the 財政上の Ombudsman - and he has decided to do just that.?

Tide's 返答 in 十分な?

This is Money 接触するd Tide after it upheld the (民事の)告訴. We asked whether it was their company 政策 to take only 部分的な/不平等な 責任/義務 if they have made people aware of the scams, and how 顧客s can be 保証するd their 基金s are 安全な.

A 広報担当者 for Tide said: '[He] has been the 犠牲者 of a scam, and we are sorry about the 強調する/ストレス he has 苦しむd as a result of this 詐欺.?

'We continuously encourage all of our members to be vigilant and remind them that Tide nor any other 財政上の 会・原則 would ever ask them to move their 基金s into another bank account.

'We are 絶えず 高めるing our systems to keep up with the コンビナート/複合体 and 発展させるing 策略 used by fraudsters.?

'Our systems produced 多重の 警告s 知らせるing [him] that he may be the vic tim of a scam.?

'[He] ignored these 警告s on 非常に/多数の occasions, and over several hours, and still proceeded to 移転 his money from 多重の accounts to the fraudsters.?

'We are a member of Stop Scams UK and have a 献身的な 159 詐欺 phone line for members to 接触する us if they 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う they are 存在 的d by scammers. This is 利用できる 24/7.?

'We encourage all of our members to 接触する us as quickly as possible on this number if they 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う they have been, or are at 危険 of becoming, 犠牲者s of 詐欺.

'He is within his 権利s to take the 問題/発行する to the 財政上の Ombudsman, as we have 輪郭(を描く)d in our formal 返答 to him.'
