High cost of heat pumps is putting 顧客s off, 監視者 警告するs

世帯s are not 取って代わるing gas boilers with heat pumps 予定 to high costs and a 欠如(する) of 認識/意識性, the 政府's spending 監視者 has 警告するd.

The 政府 wants to end the fitting of new gas boilers in most homes by 2035, and instead is encouraging 世帯s to fit heat pumps.

Heat pumps use electricity to 除去する energy from the 環境, and come in 空気/公表する, water or ground heat varieties. The 政府 wants to see 600,000 a year fitted from 2028 - an elevenfold 増加する from just 55,000 in 2023.

But the 国家の Audit Office (NAO) said that the high cost of heat pumps and a 欠如(する) of 消費者 understanding were 持つ/拘留するing 支援する more 世帯s choosing to fit heat pumps.

Elevenfold increase: The Government wants to see 600,000 heat pumps a year fitted from 2028 - up from just 55,000 in 2023

Elevenfold 増加する: The 政府 wants to see 600,000 heat pumps a year fitted from 2028 - up from just 55,000 in 2023

The 監視者 said that 'a 重要な 問題/発行する behind lower-than-推定する/予想するd heat pump uptake is their cost to use and 任命する/導入する' and that the 政府 has no 'long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 計画(する) to 演説(する)/住所 the low levels of 認識/意識性' about moving away from gas-力/強力にするd heating.

The 政府's main 道具 for encouraging 世帯s to 選ぶ heat pumps is its Boiler 昇格 計画/陰謀, which 申し込む/申し出s 認めるs of up to £7,500 to fit 空気/公表する and ground source heat pumps.

But the NAO said the Boiler 昇格 計画/陰謀 'has also underperformed', fitting just 18,900 of the 50,000 heat pumps the 政府 had hoped to fit between May 2022 and December 2023.

In October 2023 the 政府 raised the 最大限 Boiler 昇格 計画/陰謀 認める?from £5,000 to encourage more Britons to fit them.

At the moment a heat pump costs four times more to fit than a like-for-like gas boiler.

But the 政府 thinks the cost of heat pumps should 落ちる as 会社/堅いs compete to fit them, and that the 装置s should have fallen in price by up to 50 per cent by 2025.

The NAO said that the 政府 is 'relying on 楽観的な 仮定/引き受けることs about 消費者 需要・要求する and 製造業者 供給(する) of heat pumps 増加するing 大幅に' to 会合,会う its 的 of fitting 600,000 of the 装置s by 2028.

Hydrogen 持つ/拘留する-up?

The 監視者 also said the 政府 needs to hurry up and decide if UK homes will be able to use hydrogen to heat their homes or not.

Hydrogen can be used to 力/強力にする boilers in the same way that natural gas does now. In fact, switching a boiler from natural gas to hydrogen is a simple 過程 per 世帯 - but still a major 頭痛 for the UK as a whole, as 86 per cent of homes are on the gas 網状組織.

The green advantage of hydrogen is that when 燃やすd it produces just heat and water, 反して natural gas produces heat and 温室 gases 含むing 炭酸ガス.

In October 2023 the Department for Energy 安全 and 逮捕する 無 (DESNZ) said there could be a '限られた/立憲的な' 役割 for hydrogen heating, although heat pumps should be the major 焦点(を合わせる).

The 政府 is 予定 to give an update on using hydrogen for home heating by 2026, 含むing how 安全な and viable it is.

In the 合間 the 政府 was meant to 実験(する) out hydrogen heating in Whitby in July 2023, but cancelled the 計画(する) as 居住(者)s were not keen on changing their heating systems.

A smaller 裁判,公判 in Redcar was also cancelled in December 2023 as the 政府 could not find enough hydrogen nearby for the 事業/計画(する) to work.

The 不確定 around possible hydrogen heating is putting some 世帯s off 選ぶing heat pumps, the NAO said.

That is because it would be far cheaper to 修正する an 存在するing gas boiler to 燃やす hydrogen rather than fit a heat pump.

A spokesperson for the DESNZ said: 'By helping rather than 軍隊ing families to 任命する/導入する heat pumps, with a 50 per cent bigger heat pump 認める, we have 上げるd 使用/適用s by nearly 40 per cent.

'Almost half of homes in England now have an Energy 業績/成果 証明書 of C or above, up from just 14 per cent in 2010. We are 投資するing billions in home 昇格s 含むing 絶縁するing around 700,000 所有物/資産/財産s.

'Our Welcome Home to Energy Efficiency (選挙などの)運動をする is running on tv, 無線で通信する and newspapers, reaching 16.6 million 世帯s with advice and (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about how heat pumps, insulation and solar パネル盤s can 削減(する) their 放出/発行s and energy 法案s.'
