My student ÂßÉÕ¶â has Áý²Ã¤¹¤ëd by 25% in six years¡Ä should I »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â it off Áá´ü¤Ë?

I went to university between 2014 and 2018 which means I'm on the student ÊÖºÑ ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë type 2.?

I borrowed ¡ò27,865 for my tuition ÎÁ¶âs and ¡ò13,051 for °Ý»ý¡¿À°È÷, meaning a total of ¡ò40,916.

I started my first 'proper' ¿¦¶È after University in 2018 with a starting salary of ¡ò28,000 and have been over the threshold to make ÂßÉÕ¶â ÊÖºÑs since then.?

My salary has Áý²Ã¤¹¤ëd over the years and it is now around the ¡ò60,000 ¼¨¤¹.

I was shocked to find in my ºÇ¿·¤Î »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â slip that my ·îËè¤Î student ÂßÉÕ¶â ÊÖºÑ is now ¡ò250. At first, I thought there must be a mistake.?

I remember ¸ºß told at school that it would only be the same ÎÌ as a Æ°¤¤ä¤¹¤¤ phone ·ÀÌó (¡ò40-¡ò50 a month) and it gets wiped after 30 years, so not to worry about it.

I looked into it more and ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë that my student ÂßÉÕ¶â had Áý²Ã¤¹¤ëd by ¡ò10,000, ƱÅù¡Ê¤Î¡Ë to a 25 per cent Áý²Ã¤¹¤ë, in the six years since leaving university. I am »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing ¡ò250 a month and I'm not even covering the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£.

I know the ÂßÉÕ¶â will be wiped 30 years on from when I left university in 2048, but I am wondering if I should:

a) Keep »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing the ·îËè¤Î ÊÖºÑ, hope the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ will come É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë and try to forget about it.

b) Start saving money to »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â off the ÂßÉÕ¶â Áá´ü¤Ë to Èò¤±¤ë »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£. For example, save up to make a lump sum »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ë once a year to »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â off a chunk of the ÂßÉÕ¶â. I assume I'm µö¤¹d to do this. RC

Angharad Carrick of This Is Money replies: Anyone ÊÖ¤¹ing a student ÂßÉÕ¶â will know all too °æ¸Í¡¿ÊÛ¸î»ÎÀÊ the feeling of checking their balance only to see it has Áý²Ã¤¹¤ëd by thousands of ³¤±¤¶¤Þ¤ËÌԷ⤹¤ës since ´¶È.

This is ÆÃ¤Ë true for those who started their course after 2012, when ÎÁ¶âs jumped ·àŪ¤Ê from around ¡ò3,000 to around ¡ò9,000 per academic year.??

The first thing to explain is that the student ÂßÉÕ¶â system is ¤ä¤á¤ë Ê£»¨¤Ë¤¹¤ë d, and there are different levels of Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ depending on which ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë you're on.

Unlike a ´ð½à ÂßÉÕ¶â, the system ¹Ô°Ù¡¿Ë¡Îá¡¿¹ÔÆ°¤¹¤ës more like a '´¶ÈÀ¸¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë ÀǶâ' and Áý²Ã¤¹¤ës the more you earn. There are ¸½ºß¡¿°ìÈÌ¤Ë five different ÊÖºÑ ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës that will ·èÄꤹ¤ë both when you »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â your ÂßÉն⠻ٱ礹¤ë, and how much you »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â.

When will I »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶⠻ٱ礹¤ë my student ÂßÉÕ¶â??

For those on ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë 2 like you, who went to university between 1 September 2012 and 31 July 2023, you will start to ÊÖ¤¹ your ÂßÉÕ¶â once your income is over ¡ò27,295.

Those who started university before 1 September 2012 will be on ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë 1 and start ÊÖ¤¹ing once they earn over ¡ò22,015 a year, while those who started after 1 September 2023 will be on ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë 5 and start to ÊÖ¤¹ when they earn over ¡ò25,000 in a year.

In Scotland, students are on ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë 4 and will start to »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶⠻ٱ礹¤ë the ÂßÉÕ¶â once ¼ýÆþ over ¡ò27,660 a year.

All undergraduates, ´Ø¤ï¤ê¤Ê¤¯ the ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë they're on, will »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â 9 per cent of their income over the threshold, while those with postgraduate ÂßÉÕ¶âs »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â 6 per cent.

For someone like yourself ¼ýÆþ ¡ò60,000 a year, you would »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â 9 per cent of the ¡ò32,705 you earn over the threshold which equates to ¡ò245 a month.

What Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ is ¹ðȯ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¤¹ðÁʡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÎÁ¶âd on student ÂßÉÕ¶âs???

The level of Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ ŬÍѤ¹¤ëd to the ÂßÉÕ¶â is another »öÊÁ and one that has been a bone of ÏÀÁè for many ´¶ÈÀ¸¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës.

These have typically been based on the ¾®Çä Price º÷°ú Ψ of ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó (RPI) rather than the ¾ÃÈñ¼Ô Price º÷°ú (¾ÃÈñ¼Ôʪ²Á»Ø¿ô), which is more °ìÈÌŪ¤Ë used to ¼êÃÊ ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó.

However, when RPI µÞ¤Ë¾å¤¬¤ëd to 13.5 per cent in March 2023, the À¯ÉÜ introduced a cap of 7.6 per cent for all student ÂßÉÕ¶âs.

The ¸½ºß¤Î level of Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ on each ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë is as follows:

You will »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶⠻ٱ礹¤ë 9% of your income ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ your student ÂßÉÕ¶â ÊÖºÑs

Alice Haine, personal ºâÀ¯¡¿¶âÍ» ʬÀÏ²È at Bestinvest says:?Nobody wants to see thousands of ³¤±¤¶¤Þ¤ËÌԷ⤹¤ës of Äɲ乤ëd Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£, but before panicking and coming up with a ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë to »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â it off, the best Àïά for most is to ignore the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ ŬÍѤ¹¤ëd altogether.?

Instead, just »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â the ÎÌ you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë every month and direct Ãù¶â ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ other ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î goals.

The number to ¾ÇÅÀ¡Ê¤ò¹ç¤ï¤»¤ë¡Ë on is the ÎÌ you must ÊÖ¤¹ each month. For ´¶ÈÀ¸¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës on ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë 2, this is »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë at a Ψ of 9 per cent on everything a student earns above ¡ ò27,295, the ƱÅù¡Ê¤Î¡Ë of ¡ò2,274 a month before ÀǶâ, which ¸ú²ÌŪ¤Ë means the ÎÌ you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë (your total borrowings ²Ã¤¨¤ë Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£) will never ·èÄꤹ¤ë how much you must ÊÖ¤¹ every year.?

While it can be disheartening to see that what you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë is Áý²Ã¤¹¤ëing in size rather than ¸º¾¯¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ëing with your »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës, depending on your ̤Íè ¼ýÆþs you may never ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ what you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë in ½½Ê¬¤Ê as any Í¥¤ì¤¿ balance on the ÂßÉÕ¶â is wiped 30 years from the first April after ´¶È.?

Ian Futcher, ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î planner at Quilter replies: Can I and should I »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â my student ÂßÉÕ¶â off Áá´ü¤Ë? These are two questions that are likely to be on the minds of many university ´¶ÈÀ¸¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës, ÆÃ¤Ë Í½Äê to the fact that as ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó and Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψs have risen, many will have seen large ÎÌs of Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Äɲ乤ëd to their student ÂßÉÕ¶âs.

?If you are ¤¢¤ê¤½¤¦¤â¤Ê¤¤ to ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ the ÂßÉÕ¶â in 30 years it is very likely that the money will be better used ¤É¤³¤«¤è¤½¤Ç Ian Futcher?

In short, you can make Éղà »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës to your ÂßÉÕ¶â, and this is what we would typically recommend with a ÂßÉÕ¶â with lots of high Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£. However, »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing off a student ÂßÉÕ¶â Áá´ü¤Ë is not as straighforward.

Student ÂßÉÕ¶âs are not the same as ÅÁÅýŪ¤Ê ÂßÉÕ¶âs, and before you look at the ²ÄǽÀ of »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing extra ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ your student ÂßÉÕ¶â, it is important to have a good understanding of how they work.

You have seen over ¡ò5,000 in Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Äɲ乤ëd to your ÂßÉÕ¶â in just a short period, and you certainly will not be alone.?

This can be ¶Ëü¤Ë daunting and if this was a ÅÁÅýŪ¤Ê ÂßÉÕ¶â it would make sense to make Éղà »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës to »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â off the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ and ÂßÉÕ¶â as quickly as possible, but as it is a student ÂßÉÕ¶â, this may not be the best course of ³èÆ°¡¿ÀïÆ®.

Firstly, it is important to remember that ´Ø¤ï¤ê¤Ê¤¯ how much you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë, what you »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶⠻ٱ礹¤ë will not change ? it is always 9 per cent of what you earn above the thr eshold.

Quilter's Ian Futcher says »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing off your ÂßÉÕ¶â Áá´ü¤Ë depends on how much you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë

What you »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â will only change with what you earn, so if your salary rose to ¡ò70,000, your ·îËè¤Î »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës would Áý²Ã¤¹¤ë to around ¡ò320.?

Îà»÷¤·¤Æ, if your ¼ýÆþs dropped to ¡ò50,000 then the ·îËè¤Î »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës would ¸º¾¯¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë to ¤À¤¤¤¿¤¤ ¡ò170. So, although an Áý²Ã¤¹¤ëing ÂßÉÕ¶â seems daunting, it will not ¾×·â how much you »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â each month.

The second thing to take ¸ø¼°Ê¸½ñ¡¤Ç§¤á¤ë of is that the ÂßÉÕ¶â will be wiped after 30 years, ´Ø¤ï¤ê¤Ê¤¯ how much you have paid »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë. This will not class as a default; it is just the way the system ºîÉÊ.

Let's imagine there is no Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Äɲ乤ëd. You started with a ¡ò40,000 ÂßÉÕ¶â, so even if you paid off an ÉáÄ̤Ρ¿Ê¿¶Ñ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of ¡ò2,000 a year it would take 20 years to ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹.?

Once you Äɲ乤ë Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£, the ¸«¹þ¤ß of »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing it off in 30 years ¸º¾¯¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës °ÕÌ£¤¢¤ê¤²¤Ë. In fact, the ³Ø¹»¡¿Àߤ±¤ë of ²ñ·×¤Î ½Ï¹Í¤¹¤ë¡¿¹Íθ¤¹¤ës ¼¨º¶¤¹¤ës only 83 per cent of people will ever »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â off their student ÂßÉÕ¶â before the 30 years is up.

So, is it ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing off your ÂßÉÕ¶â Áá´ü¤Ë? This depends on how much you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë.?

If you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë a small ÎÌ and you could »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â off the ÂßÉÕ¶â or make Éղà »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ës, then it may be ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë considering.?

But if you ¼Ú¤ê¤¬¤¢¤ë a much larger ÎÌ, as in this instance, then »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing small lump sums or Éղà ÎÌs will not change what you »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â each year, and if you are ¤¢¤ê¤½¤¦¤â¤Ê¤¤ to ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ the ÂßÉÕ¶â in 30 years it is very likely that the money will be better used ¤É¤³¤«¤è¤½¤Ç - such as saving for house or putting it away for Â࿦.

·èÄꤹ¤ëing if it is ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶âing will depend on your personal ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î circumstances, and Áܤ·½Ð¤¹ing professional ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î advice will be ½ÅÍ×¤Ê in helping decide what is best for you in the longer run.

Alice Haine Äɲ乤ës: Even higher earners like yourself may never ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ the ÂßÉÕ¶â in ½½Ê¬¤Ê. While it may be tempting to overpay, your salary may change in the ̤Íè, so overpaying now may not make sense.?

You may have a career break to raise a family, take time off for illness, go part-time, move to a ¿¦¶È with a lower salary ? all instances that could see your salary ²¼Í¤ë below the threshold at which you must ÊÖ¤¹. Dying ̤½Ï¤Ë will also wipe the ÉéºÄ.

If, however, you are ³Î¤«¤Ê your career will continue to È˱ɤ¹¤ë and ¿äÄꤹ¤ë¡¿Í½ÁÛ¤¹¤ë to earn a very high salary in the ̤Íè, then it may make more sense to ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ the ÉéºÄ ´°Á´¤Ë, ÆÃ¤Ë if your family are willing to help, or to overpay to ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ the ÉéºÄ quicker and ¸º¤º¤ë the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψ ¹ðȯ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¤¹ðÁʡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÎÁ¶âs ŬÍѤ¹¤ëd.

Èó¡¤ÉÔ¡¤Ìµ of us can see into the ̤Íè, so for now it might be better to ignore the Íø±×¡¿¶½Ì£ Ψ, ¼õÂ÷¤¹¤ë the ·îËè¤Î »Ùʧ¤¤¡Ê³Û¡Ë and ¾ÇÅÀ¡Ê¤ò¹ç¤ï¤»¤ë¡Ë on saving ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ other ½ÅÍ×¤Ê ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î goals.?

´¶ÈÀ¸¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës in the Áá´ü¤Ë ¹Ô¤¦¡¿³«ºÅ¤¹¤ë¡¿Ãʳ¬s of a career have many ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î Í¥Àès such as saving for a home deposit or raising a family, so if it was up to me, I'd ¾ÇÅÀ¡Ê¤ò¹ç¤ï¤»¤ë¡Ë on those instead.

If the student ÂßÉÕ¶â ÊÖºÑs really bother you, however, and you are ǼÆÀ¤µ¤»¤ëd that you are »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë for a successful, °æ¸Í¡¿ÊÛ¸î»ÎÀÊ-paid career then go ahead and save to ¡Êµ¿¤¤¤ò¡ËÀ²¤é¤¹ the ÂßÉÕ¶â earlier.?

But Èó¡¤ÉÔ¡¤Ìµ of us ever know what will happen in the ̤Íè ? so think carefully before committing ´ð¶âs you may need for other things.
