JEFF PRESTRIDGE: ULEZ 罰金 for driver whose car was on 支援する of a lorry!

The 市長 of London's money-making Ultra Low 放出/発行 Zone (ULEZ) has gone 負かす/撃墜する like a lead balloon with many 運転者s since it was 拡大するd in late August last year.

There have been 'honk if you hate ULEZ' demonstrations in London while more than 1,000 ULEZ cameras have either been 損失d or stolen. Yet Sadiq 旅宿泊所 has not been for turning.

The 計画/陰謀, designed to 限界 harmful 汚染 (really?), means that anyone with a 非,不,無-compliant 乗り物 must 支払う/賃金 a daily £12.50 料金 to 運動 within London. 失敗 to 支払う/賃金 the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 敏速に can result in a 罰金 of up to £180. Some 60,000 乗り物 owners ? of 石油 cars 登録(する)d before 2006 and ディーゼル cars 登録(する)d before 2015 ? are 支払う/賃金ing the daily 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金.

Louise Matz, an accountant from Pinner in North-West London, has paid more than £300 in ULEZ 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s since the 計画/陰謀 was 開始する,打ち上げるd. To 確実にする she never got 罰金d, she 始める,決める up an '自動車-支払う/賃金' account with 輸送(する) for London (TfL).

In January, she decided enough was enough and sold her ULEZ 非,不,無-compliant Kia for a compliant Nissan Micra. The Driver and 乗り物 Licensing 機関 duly 通知するd her that she was no longer the owner of the Kia. 自信のない as to whether she had any 優れた ULEZ 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s, she kept open her account so they could be paid from her bank account.

Last Tuesday, Louise received her 月毎の ULEZ 声明 for February and was shocked to discover that she had incurred a £12.50 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 on February 5 ? ten days after 配置する/処分する/したい気持ちにさせるing of her Kia.

The supporting camera picture showed her car on a transporter lorry in Enfield, North London ? 推定では on its way to be auctioned. Having 首尾よく challenged a previous 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 because a ULEZ camera 混乱させるd the 'C' on someone's else's number plate with the 'G' on hers, she assumed she would have no problem overturning the £12.50 法案.

But, bizarrely, TfL said she was still liable for the 罰金. This is because she had not 除去するd the Kia from her 自動車-支払う/賃金 account at the time it was caught on camera.

In its letter to Louise, TfL said: 'We're unable to make an 調整/give you a refund as we have reviewed the 乗り物 image and believe that the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 has been raised 正確に.'

What utter tosh. We already know that the ULEZ 計画/陰謀 is 不公平な, 広範囲にわたって disliked and a 税金 on many hard-working people.

What Louise's experience 最高潮の場面s is that the 計画/陰謀 is operated by people whose 単独の 義務 is to raise as much 歳入 as possible for TfL. ありふれた sense just doesn't get a look in. If you have done the same as Louise and jettisoned your 非,不,無-compliant ULEZ car in favour of one that gets Mr 旅宿泊所's 調印(する) of 是認, don't forget to 除去する your old モーター from TfL's 自動車-支払う/賃金 service.

I have taken up Louise's 事例/患者 with TfL and will 報告(する)/憶測 支援する when I get a 返答. Hopefully, TfL will see the madness of its ways and refund Louise the money it had no 権利 to take from her.

The brilliant buildings you could bank on...?

A big thank you to all those lovely readers who have taken the trouble over the past few days to 指名する their most 注目する,もくろむ-catching bank 支店 ? still open, の近くにd (for good) or repurposed.

This follows a trip earlier this month to Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, where I つまずくd upon a magnificent HSBC b ranch whose roots go 支援する to 1810 when it was the home of Stratford Old Bank. An 課すing Victorian gothic building which to this day still takes the breath away.

Some of the pictures you sent in of 地元の 支店s were jaw-dropping, 確認するing just how important they once were to the communities they served. Many were ? and remain ? grandiose buildings, 支配するing the streets.

Although space 妨げるs me from showing all these splendid examples of architectural banking excellence, three caught my 注目する,もくろむ. The first is 王室の Bank of Scotland's 旗艦 支店 in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh ? put 今後 by 49-year-old actuary Kirsten ワット who lives in Perth.

Kirsten used to work for the 保険 arm of RBS, in a building の近くに to the 支店. 'I loved going in there at lunchtime,' she 解任するs, 'and marvelling at the size of the banking hall, its ドーム 天井 and ornamental design. I never got bored of it.'

High life: (From top left down) RBS HQ in Edinburgh, Rainham's The Greedy Banker, NatWest in Burslem, and right, Arnold Bennett

While Kirsten lost her 職業 under the madcap 統治する of RBS boss Fred 'The Shred' Goodwin, she soon 設立する 雇用 at a 競争相手 財政上の services company. She 追加するs: 'A few Christmases ago, I went 支援する to the 支店 with one of my two daughters and was blown away again. It's a fantastic building, inside and out.'

The former home of merchant Sir Lawrence Dundas, the building was acquired by RBS just under 200 years ago. Its beauty means it is an integral part of walking 小旅行するs around the new town. Whether it remains integral to RBS's ever-dwindling 支店 網状組織, only time will tell.

The second is the 課すing NatWest 支店 in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, a 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)d building which has been empty since 2017.

居住(者) Carol Gorton says the gothic-style 支店, that started life as the 地区 Bank in 1870, often featured in the novels of 地元の writer Arnold Bennett who wrote prolifically between the 1890s and 1930s. Carol, 長官 of the 200-member strong Arnold Bennett Society, says Burslem (Bursley in Bennett's novels) has now lost all its major banks. 'It is 苦しむing on many levels,' says Carol who is busy organising the society's 年次の Arnold Bennett Day in June. 'Empty shops 支配する. The NatWest building and the old Lloyds 支店 point to a past when the area was 栄えるing.'

Finally, retired charity 労働者 Jill Sidders, who lives just outside Sittingbourne in Kent, tells me that the old Barclays bank in nearby Rainham is now a pub called The Greedy 銀行業者. 'The bank didn't have any architectural 長所,' she 収容する/認めるs, 'but the 指名する change was meritorious. I've never been inside the pub, but I do have a 静かな chuckle to myself whenever I walk past it.'

Thanks for all your pictures and emails.

No one likes to talk about personal 負債. Most people ignore it, hoping it will miraculously go away. Of course, it doesn't. Sadly, problems with 支払う/賃金ing 負かす/撃墜する 負債 are on the rise as many 世帯s' 財政/金融s are 存在 stretched to breaking point.

Credit card 負債 ? and 利益/興味 率s ? continue to rise while mortgage arrears are now at a seven-year high.

It is therefore timely that charity StepChange (stepchange.org) will tomorrow 開始する,打ち上げる its tenth '負債 認識/意識性 Week'.
