< p class="mol-para-with-font">Luckily, there's a 安全な way to earn returns on your money without the taxman taking a slice.

Instead of piling into one-year 社債s 申し込む/申し出d by banks, 投資するing in British 政府 社債s ? known as gilts ? can have enormous 税金 advantages.

Bella Caridade-Ferreira, the 投資 専門家 behind comparison website Compare & 投資する, says 投資するing in these 社債s is a 'no brainer' this year.?

They will be 特に useful for higher-率 taxpayers who have maxed out their £20,000 Isa allowance and £500 personal 貯金 allowances this year.

Many 投資家s have already wised up to the (法などの)抜け穴. Half of the ten most popular 投資s in September at stockbroker AJ Bell were 政府 社債s.?

一方/合間, at stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown, 従来の gilt 購入(する)s have 増加するd by 538 per cent over the past 12 months.

Those who make the most of the little-known trick can 捕らえる、獲得する returns above 5 per cent 地位,任命する 税金. But to truly take advantage, you'll need to 選ぶ the 権利 gilts and 持つ/拘留する them until the end of their 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BUYING INTO GILTS?

Savers who have diligently built even modest nest eggs are now getting stung. This is because 利益/興味 earned on 貯金 is 扱う/治療するd as income and 税金d at your ごくわずかの 率 of 所得税.

For basic-率 taxpayers, the taxman takes 20 per cent on 利益/興味 earned above £1,000 a year, for higher-率 it's 40 per cent above £500 and 付加 率 支払う/賃金 45 per cent on everything they earn.?

These allowances look ますます miserly as 利益/興味 率s shoot up.

投資するing in gilts has two big 利益s.?

The first is that 政府 社債s are 安全な 投資s unlike some other types of 社債s ? すなわち 問題/発行するd by countries on the 瀬戸際 of 破産. The second is that the returns you make on them are 解放する/自由な from 資本/首都 伸び(る)s 税金 which 適用するs to many other 投資s, such as 株, 基金s or 投資 信用s outside of an Isa.

Gilts are 簡単に IOUs that you can buy off the 政府. That money can be used to 支払う/賃金 for anything from the NHS to Britain's schools. In return for lending your cash to the 政府, you receive a 正規の/正選手 支払い(額) known as a 'coupon'. At the end of the 社債's 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語, when it 円熟したs, you get 支援する the 初めの 量 you paid for the 社債 ? known as its '額面価格'.?

The only 推論する/理由 you might not get your money 支援する is if the 政府 goes 破産者/倒産した and is unable to 支払う/賃金 its 負債s. This means that 投資するing in gilts ? UK 政府 社債s ? is as 安全な as putting your money into 国家の 貯金 & 投資s (NS&I) accounts, which are also 保証(人)d by the UK 政府, says L aith Khalaf, 長,率いる of 投資 分析 at 投資 壇・綱領・公約 AJ Bell.

While the 利益/興味 you earn from gilts is 支配する to 課税 like any other income, any 資本/首都 伸び(る) you make from them is not.

And because gilts are often 貿易(する)d on the 第2位 market ? for example with stockbrokers ? at a 割引, you can buy them for below the price you will get 支援する when the gilt 円熟したs. This means you can make a 保証(人)d 資本/首都 伸び(る) at the end of the 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語.

Jason Hollands, of wealth 経営者/支配人 Bestinvest, says that this makes 投資するing in gilts more 税金 efficient than 持つ/拘留するing money in cash, 特に for those who have exhausted their Isa allowance and are 持つ/拘留するing money outside their 年金s.

HOW TO UNLOCK RETURNS OF 5 PER CENT-PLUS

The 重要な to success, Khalaf says, is 存在 able to work out how much money you will save in not payin g 資本/首都 伸び(る)s 税金 versus how much 税金 you will have to 支払う/賃金 on 利益/興味 you earn. Once you have mastered this, it is possible to 達成する an after-税金 産する/生じる of over 5 per cent.

His 計算/見積りs show that a basic-率 taxpayer who has already exhausted his or her personal 貯金 allowance of £1,000 a year could receive a 地位,任命する-税金 return of 5.31 per cent on gilts 円熟したing at the end of January 2024.

Higher-率 taxpayers, who only have a £500 貯金 allowance, will find their return is 5.24 per cent, and 付加 率 taxpayers 5.25 per cent.?

In contrast, the best-buy, one-year 社債 from Metro Bank, which 支払う/賃金s 5.8 per cent, would give basic-率 taxpayers a 地位,任命する-税金 return of 4.68 per cent, higher 率 taxpayers 3.51 per cent and 付加 率 taxpayers 3.22 per cent.

WHAT ARE THE BEST GILTS TO BUY ? AND WHY?

Every gilt will have a different price, coupon and 成熟 date, which means that you will have to 選ぶ carefully.

Fortunately, the 成熟 date and the coupon are in the 指名する of the gilt, so it is 平易な to find out this (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状).

Some examples of gilts with low 産する/生じるs and 比較して 切迫した 成熟 dates are: 財務省 0.25% 31/01/2025 or 財務省 0.125% 31/01/2028.

To work out the 地位,任命する-税金 return you will get, you also need to know the 現在の price of the gilt. For example, the gilt 円熟したing on January 31, 2025 is 現在/一般に 利用できる at £95.15. This will return £100 at the end of the 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語.

That means you would receive a 資本/首都 伸び(る) of £4.87 for every £95.15 you spent on this gilt now, or 5.1 per cent of your 投資. You would also receive a 産する/生じる of 0.26 per cent, or 26p for every £100 you 投資する ? on which you would have to 支払う/賃金 税金.

によれば AJ Bell, the 普通の/平均(する) gilt 買い手 購入(する)d £129,000 価値(がある) of gilts in September.

If you want to tuck your money away for longer, the sums look わずかに different. The gilt 円熟したing on January 31, 2028, is 現在/一般に 利用できる at a price of £85.31.

On January 31, 2028, it will return you £100, so you will receive a 資本/首都 伸び(る) of 17 per cent of your 初めの 投資 over a period of just over three years. You will also receive a taxable coupon 支払い(額).

DAUNTED? HERE'S HOW ? AND WHERE ? TO BUY

If you have never bought gilts before, the 過程 can seem daunting. You will need to account for the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s for both buying and 持つ/拘留するing the gilts.

You can buy 政府 社債s 直接/まっすぐに through the 負債 管理/経営 Office, which is the 政府's 負債 issuer.

It 申し込む/申し出s a gilt 購入(する) and sale service, meaning that yo u can buy and sell gilts that are already in the market.

To use it you must become a member of an '認可するd group' of 投資家s, and you will be 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d 0.7 per cent of the value of the gilts to buy them and the same to sell them, with some 削減s if you are 取引,協定ing with more than £10,000 of gilts at a time.

There is more (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about this service at dmo.gov.uk.

Alternatively, you can buy and sell gilts through a stockbroker or online 貿易(する)ing 壇・綱領・公約. Many of them only 許す you to buy gilts over the phone although some have a select number that can be bought online.

MAKE SURE YOU USE UP YOUR ALLOWANCES FIRST

While gilts can 申し込む/申し出 重要な 税金 advantages, not everyone should use this (法などの)抜け穴.

Make sure you first use up all your personal 貯金 allowance. If you don't 支払う/賃金 税金 on your 貯金 利益/興味, it may be cheaper to use a high 利益/興味 貯金 account.

The same goes if you still have some of your £20,000 Isa allowance to use up. Virgin Money has a one-year Isa at 5.65 per cent.

If you are saving for 退職 you may be better off using a 年金 ? the 税金 救済 利益s are too 広大な/多数の/重要な to 行方不明になる.

And if the 計算/見積りs on gilts are too コンビナート/複合体, don't take the 危険. Use 貯金 instead.
