Barclays debanked our tennis club - £120 補償(金) isn't enough: CRANE ON THE CASE

  • 安全 checks and change of 演説(する)/住所 led to club's bank account 存在 の近くにd
  • Treasurer is unhappy with the £120 是正する 申し込む/申し出d by the bank
  • Had a problem with a company? Email: helen.crane@thisismoney.co.uk?

I'm a keen lawn tennis player and the treasurer of my 地元の club. In summer 2023, the club was 接触するd by Barclays as it said we needed to go through some 'know your 顧客' 安全 checks.

This 証明するd a challenge, as Barclays asked us for (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) that wasn't 関連した to us, such as our Companies House 詳細(に述べる)s which we don't have as we are a community organisation and not a 登録(する)d company.

After several months and many calls, I did manage to 完全にする the checks. At the same time, I asked if I could change the 演説(する)/住所 on the account to that of the club house, as mail was 現在/一般に going to the previous treasurer who had left the 役割.

That seemed to 誘発する/引き起こす some 肉親,親類d of 警告 as in November, the club's accounts were の近くにd without notice. They were not opened again until 中央の-January 2024.

Ruled out: This tennis club saw its bank account closed by Barclays, and it took 41 days for it to be opened again leaving it with various problems

支配するd out: This tennis club saw its bank account の近くにd by Barclays, and it took 41 days for it to be opened again leaving it with さまざまな problems?

This left us with さまざまな problems, 含むing 行方不明になるd direct debit 支払い(額)s, late 支払い(額)s of 法案s which incurred 料金s and one large 支払い(額) made twice in error.

All in all, we're out of pocket by nearly £600. Can you help? P.H, Oxfordshire

Helen Crane, This is Money's 消費者 支持する/優勝者, replies: Debanking continues to be an 当惑 to our 財政上の 会・原則s, and I'm sad to hear that another community group has been 影響する/感情d by it.

The good folks who run groups like yours often do lots of thankless work for little reward, all to make sure that fellow 熱中している人s have a place to 会合,会う and 追求する their hobby.

Banks must make sure their 顧客s are who they say they are, but wasting time and 資源 成し遂げるing painstaking and often irrelevant checks on clubs and societies on seems 反対する-intuitive given the low 危険 of fraudulent activity.?

It's no wonder that some have questioned whether the real 動機 is to get these organisations, which don't make much money for the banks, to go どこかよそで.?

I've 以前 報告(する)/憶測d on charities, choirs and parish 会議s having their bank accounts の近くにd 負かす/撃墜する, often with little 警告 or explanation.

In your 事例/患者, your tennis club was served a letter 説 that you needed to 完全にする know your 顧客 安全 checks, referred to by the banks as 'KYC'. This is often the starting point for organisations that are debanked.?

The club held £62,000 with Barclays, part in a 経常収支 and part in 貯金. The money mostly comes from members' 予定s and is used to 支払う/賃金 for the 維持/整備 of the 法廷,裁判所s and club house, 同様に as 公共事業(料金)/有用性 法案s.?

So you began a ボレー 支援する and 前へ/外へ with the bank, trying to get it sorted. This 証明するd 堅い, you said, as the call centre staff didn't seem to know how to を取り引きする an organisation that wasn't either an individual, or a 限られた/立憲的な company ? but you 固執するd and got there in the end. I make that 15-love to you.

But the debanking game had only just begun. The 行き詰まり,妨げる (機の)カム when you requested a simple 演説(する)/住所 update, which seems to have 衝突/不一致d with the checks 以前 行為/行うd and led to your account 存在 の近くにd.?

You did send through proof of the new 演説(する)/住所 but were later told this was lost.

It was supposed to take 10 days to get the account 復帰させるd, Barclays said, but there was a 列 to start that 過程 which meant it 現実に took 41 days.

Unable to 支払う/賃金 公共事業(料金)/有用性 法案s, you received daily phone calls from peeved 供給者s and were even 脅すd with disconnection.

Called out: P.H was not happy with the call centre staff he spoke to at Barclays, and is asking for additional compensation

Called out: P.H was not happy with the call centre staff he spoke to at Barclays, and is asking for 付加 補償(金)?

When you raised this with Barclays you say you were first told that you should foot the 法案s with your own money ? a (人命などを)奪う,主張する Barclays 否定するs.

Confusingly, you were later told a cheque for £60,000 - the money in the 貯金 account - could be sent to you in the 指名する of the club. But as the account with the club's 指名する had been の近くにd, it wouldn't have been able to be paid in anywhere.

When you pointed that out, you say another person on the phone at Barclays 申し込む/申し出d to make the cheque out in your personal 指名する.?

This 申し込む/申し出 worried you as, like many clu b and charity accounts, the 委任統治(領) has 共同の 加盟国s to guard against mis-管理/経営 of 基金s. This means money shouldn't be 許すd to be taken out unless you, and the club's 大統領,/社長, 認可する it.?

最終的に, the account was 再開するd ? but a 支払い(額) scheduled weeks earlier also went out without 警告. As you'd sorted this by another means by then, it meant the club had 二塁打-paid a 供給者 - money which you say you are struggling to get refunded.?

The episode has left the club out of pocket by £580, and that is not counting the 重要な man hours you put in trying to get it sorted.

Barclays 申し込む/申し出d you a 好意/親善 支払い(額) of £120, but you didn't think this was enough and got in touch with me.

I 押し進めるd Barclays on its 申し込む/申し出 and it has now agreed to 支払う/賃金 you a £500 是正する 支払い(額), 加える £445 in compensatory 利益/興味 for the period the account was の近くにd.?

If you can 供給する proof of the £60 料金s you say you incurred for 行方不明になるd direct debits, it will also refund you for those. It put your struggle 負かす/撃墜する to a 'clerical error'.

A Barclays 広報担当者 said: 'We 受託する that the 終結 of our 顧客's account should not have occurred, and can 確認する the account has been 再開するd.

'A clerical error meant that our 記録,記録的な/記録するs showed we had 相反する (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) when this was not the 事例/患者.?

'We have every sympathy with our 顧客 and understand the inconvenience this c aused. We have 申し込む/申し出d our profuse 陳謝s together with a 是正する 支払い(額) in 承認 of the difficulties they 直面するd.'

But the game is not yet over for you. You have since told me you have followed up with Barclays and 需要・要求するd その上の answers, 同様に as a 重要な 増加する in the 補償(金) 申し込む/申し出d to 多重の thousands of 続けざまに猛撃するs.

You argue that there are major 欠陥s in Barclays' 安全 checks, communication and (民事の)告訴s 過程s,?and that you should be better 補償するd for the 量 of time you spent sorting out the account.?

The ball is now 支援する in Barclays' 法廷,裁判所...
