CMI 8738 it's host based chip. It uses the main CPU for hardware accelereation (like most of the sound chips). Creative chips (talking about home users) are basically the single ones who do have real hardware acceleration over MPEG files.
About the discontinuity, don't know what to tell. But I don't think you hear something.
