Just tested, same prob here, is not specific to vo driver, attached mplayer 
log for Arpi. Sample movies available from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/wm8/default.asp
Uploaded wmv8 codec to FTP -> MPlayer/incoming/wmv8codec/
