Case Study: Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP

Stratus

BusinessAccording to The National Law Journal, the fledgling law firm Robert S. Strauss and Richard A. Gump founded in 1945 is now the 25th largest law firm in the United States, and Practical Law Company ranks the company among the Global 50 firms. Today Akin Gump has offices across the U.S. as well as in locations from Moscow to Dubai and Taipei.

Approach Akin Gump employees―some 2,200 knowledge workers―rely on the firm’s intranet site for everything from human resources information to procedures, guidelines and best practices. When the firm began creating a new employee intranet portal, search was factored in as a top priority. “In our internal surveys, lack of robust search was the biggest complaint about our existing intranet site,” recalls Director of Applications Development Anthony Paul. “Having world-class search was an absolute requirement for the new site.”

Solution Paul and his team selected the Google Search Appliance to make corporate information and documents easily accessible on the firm’s revamped intranet. Once integrated with the new intranet portal software, Paul says, “The Google Search Appliance did a terrific job of ripping right through every ounce of content we have to make it easily accessible to all our employees worldwide.”

Results Akin Gump now has more than 2,800 pages on its intranet, which the Google Search Appliance has made fully searchable. And there are more than 300,000 entries in the intranet index, covering everything from the client projects and best practices to the firm directory.

Paul notes that the Google Search Appliance provides record response times plus a user interface and natural-language query approach that’s familiar and easy to use. “Our users love the Google interface and the fact that they can ask questions without having to know Boolean logic―Google searches are what they are accustomed to,” says Paul. “Plus, the speedy Google performance has brought search down to sub-second response times.”

Paul and his team have also customized this solution by pushing out rich firm directory information. Search returns often include employee pictures, phone numbers, offices and more. “In 90 or so percent of cases, employees get the information they need on the first try, without ever having to click through to another page,” says Paul.

Moving forward, Paul and his team are most excited about sharing best practices documents and knowledge―all readily accessible from the familiar Google search interface. “Knowledge management is a real boon for us,” says Paul. “Attorneys are the ultimate knowledge workers, and the Google Search Appliance allows them to find things quickly and accurately. This is critical to us, because our clients don’t want one of our attorneys looking three times for something. They have to find it on the first try, and that’s what they can do using the Google Search Appliance.”
