States Writes : the Progressives' Peer Directory from the American Street Research links to mass media & blog sources in all states. Swing states - won by less than 55% of the popular vote in 2004 - are highlighted, with cumulative Kerry/Nader/Cobb vote totals defined as Dems. State newspapers are generally listed in order of city size, but capital city papers and highly regarded publications may supersede that. Blogs without fresh content after 30 November 2004 were removed.
Best viewed at 800 x 600 resolution on a 17" monitor or larger. It should look okay at higher resolutions if you increase your browser's text size. At 1600 x 1200 it will still be smallish; at 640 x 480 it'll be readable but the layout will skew. Between those two extremes, it should be fine.
Presidential Race Color Key: the gray and blue states define ongoing majority votes of 55% or better in the 2004 election, the paler blue defines three states that shifted from solid blue between the 2000 and 2004 elections (CA/DE/NJ) so they're barely into swing territory. Four states (AZ/LA/TN/WV) shifted to gray.

The red and blue stars by every state name are the quickest reminder defining which way they voted in 2004. They also click through to BugMeNot.com for quick access to passwords to bypass newspaper registration screens. Try 'em!
A [*C] beside a link denotes a conservative blogger or op-ed columnist included as a sample of reasonable folk with conservative views, amid the progressive thought that this linkpage was designed to catalogue. 'Progressive' is defined as the advance of the common good within any evolving democracy that resists the worst extremes of conservatism .

Most groupings are randomly ordered, though with issues (NOT demographics), efforts ware made to list more informational and regularly updated sites first. The Sitemeter/TTLB list of Top 50 blogs by Traffic is quite obviously not random. The final group - with the lilac background - is intended as a break from the oppressiveness of current events and the challenge of deep debates. Enjoy; they provide the brilliance and balms of genius.

Added Election Note for 2000
It can't be assumed that the combined Gore and Nader votes will reflect accurately what the 2000 vote would be without Nader, but it's fair to guess that it's likely within 1% of correct. Based on that 'best guess', were we to project where the likely closest races will be in 2004 solely on that, the battleground states - with electoral votes shown - will be, in order (presuming no Nader on the ballot):
OH 20, MO 10 (voted 1% GOP)
FL 27 (voted 2% DEM)
NV 5 (voted 2% GOP)
AZ 10, TN 11 (3% GOP)
IA 7, NH 4 (3% DEM)
WI 10, NM 5 (4% DEM)
CO 9, AR 6, WV 5 (4% GOP)
OR 7 (5% DEM)
VA 13 (6% GOP)
PA 21, MI 17, MN 10 (7% DEM)
LA 9 (7% GOP)
WA 11 (9% DEM)
Added Election Note for 2004
Compared to 2000, AZ, LA, TN and WV shifted to gray and CA, DE and NJ became swing states. However, no swing state with more than a 7% difference in the 2000 popular vote proved to be competitive in 2004. Using that 7% as the new benchmark, instead of the old 10%, the races most likely to be competitive in 2008 will be:
IA 7, NM 5 (under 1% GOP)
WI 10 (1% DEM)
PA 21, NH 4 (2% DEM)
OH 20, NV 5 (2% GOP)
MI 17, MN 10, OR 7 (4% DEM)
FL 27, CO 9 (4% GOP)
with AR/DE/MO/NJ/WA (8%), and VA/CA (9%) as longshots. Thus in six states Bush won and six Kerry won, if 2% of the voters switch sides in 2008, all twelve could go exactly opposite how they went in 2004. Only drastically changed circumstances or mismatched candidates could bring the next seven (or others) into play.

FAQs:
Q: The media refers to blue and red states. Why did you use blue and gray ?
A: With few exceptions, the divisions currently existing reflect an ongoing one since our country was founded. The majority of the people in solid gray states believe there are humans and lesser humans. Whether defining by race, gender, religion or sexual identity, they've sought to enslave, deny suffrage to, limit the rights of, deny privilege to, or have otherwise marginalized groups who do not look, think, believe or act the same as the majority demographic, which is white, Christian and heterosexual. Their history is rife with odious behaviors: slavery, lynching, mob violence, hatred of Catholics and Jews, laws against mixed marriages, xenophobia and fear of cooperative international institutions, suppression of sexuality and knowledge thereof, anti-unionism, and the worst acts of war committed on US soil. Such bigotry may exist in blue states as well, but not with majority approval. The media chose its colors randomly. I chose these to define them as I've experienced them, the Blue and the Gray.
Q: Doesn't that promote division ?
A: I think it defines the truth of the existing division. You're entitled to your opinion.
Q: Why did you divide the blogs by states ?
A: To promote contact and community-building within regions, so online and offline political actions can be shared. Ideally, though, further subdivisions would be helpful, with larger states broken into smaller regions, to better facilitate meetups within reasonable travel times.
Q: My blog is listed in the wrong state. Will you correct that ?
A: Yes, email me, and I will.
Q: I'd like to get my blog listed here. How can I do that ?
A: If you were listed before and delisted because your blogging ceased for more than 60 days, I'll relist it if your blogging has resumed, if you drop me a line. Otherwise, you can't at this time get added. The amount of work required in the initial version was immense as I had to email many bloggers to determine their location. And between the first and second editions of this, there were nearly a thousand requests, requiring a ton of my time without recompense. My baby's just grown too large! Should others have a solution or wish to adopt the project partially or wholly, drop me a line. I simply can't be maintaining a massive effort for free under my present circumstances.
Q: How did you decide which media sources to include? ?
A: In choosing newspapers for daily reads and for individual states, a methodology was applied. Knight Ridder papers have been doing the best investigative work of any chain for the past few years and the five I highlighted include the better investigative reporters or provide the best overviews of them all. There and throughout the state listings, I put heavy emphasis on the swing states and the three media centers of NY, DC and CA. The solid GOP and solid Dem states generally show far fewer newspapers. From there, in the swing states, I looked for papers in every city with a population of 50,000 or more. Originally, I had all of them listed. Over a few months, revisiting those papers, I looked for 'news', 'editorials', 'columnists' or 'elections' categories. In quite a few, there was simply little or nothing noteworthy that could help anyone get a sense of the political mood there, so I winnowed them out. I erred on the side of leaving a few questionable ones in. I probably missed a few alt. weeklies, but I think I got plenty, in any case. In non-swing states, if I had one big paper likely to be read statewide, and one from the state capital, that was usually enough. However a few other papers were simply too good to ignore. As a result, if anyone's researching a swing state, the papers and blogs listed should provide a pretty good snapshot of what issues are resounding in the major population centers of each. Coupled with several good poll sites and blogs, they should provide plenty of material to analyze and digest, and to find topical material from, if you're a blogger or journalist. And don't forget, if those news sites require registration, you can click the star next to each state name, plug in the url of the paper and (usually) get a username and password to use, without doing your own registration.
Q: There's just way too much here. How can I possibly figure out what to read in my limited time ?
A: There's several ways to approach this, depending on your reason for reading. It may take you days or weeks to develop your own shortcuts, but it's worth the effort, for the efficient outcome you'll develop.
If you're a reader who wishes to gain a cross section of news and opinion at international, national, and local levels, try reading through the blogs and news sites in your home state section, for the local. For the national, go to the Topics section. Most of the news sites and news aggregators are in the left, red column. You'll also find world media and blogs from around the globe there. In the right (blue) column, try the 'Top 50 progressive blogs' and the group blogs. It'll take a couple of weeks perhaps, to wade through them all, but after the first time through, you'll be able to create your own shortlist from those sections to visit after that.
If you're doing research into a particular topic, just go to the topics list and look for the area you're researching. And of the blogs in that category, you might also consider what they list in their sidebars.
If you're a new or ongoing blogger, journalist or writer, I'd recommend starting in the Topics section. Specifically, start by going through the Red and Blue columns. They contain the greatest abundance of source material to write about. The center (White) column is more topic-centric if there's a specific area of focus you'd like to delve into. But also, over time, go through the state sections. There's over 1,000 unique voices there and quite a few gems to be found.
No matter which of those you are, if you also have rudimentary HTML skills, another useful option is to customize this page. Either by using a simple text editor, or the basic (like Notepad), you can easily copy the source code into your own .htm file. Within each section or each state, you'll find some you really enjoy. Highlight them with (em)(/em) or (b)(/b), using brackets instead of parentheses, of course. Once you've done this, you can open your .htm file from your desktop to your browser and find all those you've bolded, quickly and efficiently.
If you choose the last course, of customization, you can download two graphic images as well, the red and blue stars next to each state name, to include in the folder where you put the .htm file. You'll be lacking three background color files. All are 25 x 25 pixels in size. One is bgblues.gif which is the medium blue used in several places. One is bgswing.gif which is the pale blue used in swing states. And the third is yell.gif which is the main yellow used all over. If you create those three graphics using your own preferred colors, but titled with the same names I used, and save them in that same .htm folder, everything should display properly without messing with any code anywhere, beyond the bolding of your favored sites.
Q: Hey, how come you didn't list such-and-such blog in such-and-such topic list ?
A: The state sections were intended to be all-inclusive. The topics sections were designed to be more exclusive, with a sampling of some better ones, to serve as a quality reference section. That's not entirely true, as the news media sources and the 'Demographics of Discrimination' and a couple of others are fairly long. But in these topics areas, I will consider adding blogs or websites of high quality. Make your suggestion and I'll review it, with no guarantee of inclusion. If I think it's essential to the topic area, I'll add it. I can handle suggestions like these and update monthly. A few dozen changes, instead of hundreds monthly, is manageable, and improves the topical resources.
Q: Is there anything else I should consider here ?
A: Yes. If you find this resource useful to you, please use it often. Link to it here, come back whenever, and I think you'll soon see which sections will prove valuable to your efforts. And then consider clicking on the flag below and adding a contribution via PayPal. As your host, I can say in all honesty, such tips are greatly appreciated. They help keep this resource - and the American Street - online.
