  • An update to Twitter for Windows Phone

    Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Today we're introducing a new version of Twitter for Windows Phone. In addition to a new design, which brings the app in line with other Twitter apps, this update includes several features that make it easier for you to discover and share the content that matters to you.

New navigation. Four new tabs – Home, Connect, Discover and Me – bring you closer to the things you care about.
    • Home: View Tweets from the accounts you follow; tap a Tweet to expand it and see more content, such as photos, videos and website summaries
    • Connect: Keep up with your mentions; see who has followed you or retweeted or favorited one of your Tweets
    • Discover: See trends, and find new content on Twitter –– browse categories, find friends on Twitter and see suggestions for accounts to follow
    • Me: Read and respond to your direct messages; see your lists, favorites and more; view and update your profile

Tweet and search icons. Compose a Tweet or search from anywhere in the app, using the new icon buttons in the Application Bar.

Live tiles. Pin Twitter accounts, lists and searches to your start screen, giving you quick access to some of your favorite Twitter content.

Get it now to experience the best Twitter app yet on your Windows Phone.

  • Twitter for Firefox OS

    Monday, February 25, 2013

Yesterday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Mozilla announced that 18 mobile operators from around the world will support Firefox OS, its new mobile operating system that takes advantage of the power of the web. When those devices begin to ship, Twitter for Firefox OS will be available in the Firefox Marketplace.

Similar to our other mobile apps, Twitter for Firefox OS has a rich interface, featuring the Home, Connect, Discover and Me tabs, as well as the search and compose Tweet icons, so you can easily find and send Tweets from anywhere in the app.

We've also implemented support for a feature unique to Firefox OS: Web Activities. This lets you tweet photos directly out of any app that also supports web activities such as the built-in photos app.

We're excited about the future of Firefox OS, and look forward to phones shipping with support for our new Twitter app.

  • A look back at the Oscars

    Sunday, February 24, 2013

Tonight was Hollywood’s biggest night for celebrating film, and Twitter hosted a global Oscars party. Whether you were cheering on your favorite nominees or just checking out behind the scenes pictures, Twitter united the audience at home with attendees at the show, bringing them closer to the glitz and glam.

All in all, there were 8.9 million Tweets about the 85th Academy Awards: 2.1 million during the red carpet, and 6.8 million during the awards show. People at home (and in the audience) tweeted as the night’s most exciting and entertaining moments unfolded. The events that drove the most conversation on Twitter this evening, based on tweets per minute, were:

Best Picture award for Argo: 85,300 TPM
    Adele performs “Skyfall”: 82,300 TPM
Best Actress in a Leading Role for Jennifer Lawrence: 71,600 TPM
Best Original Song for Adele: 64,000 TPM
Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Anne Hathaway: 60,400 TPM

For many, the Oscars aren’t just about film; they’re about fashion. And people on Twitter are quick to share their picks for best (and worst) dressed of the evening. Celebrities at the show and at home tweeted their favorite looks of the night.

As the winners accepted awards, celebrities both at the show and at home tweeted messages of congratulations and to their fellow nominees, co-stars, and industry peers.

Stars love giving folks a glimpse into their world, especially when they’re at an event like the Oscars. Twitter was like a backstage pass for folks watching at home who wanted an inside peek of the night.

Even though the Oscars are over, you can connect with your favorite film stars through Twitter all year. Follow @TwitterMovies for access to Hollywood’s brightest stars.

  • Watch the #Oscars with the stars

    Friday, February 22, 2013

Just like the movies that the awards celebrate, the Oscars show always delivers a mix of drama and comedy, suspense and surprises, and tears and cheers. As the audience in the Dolby Theatre claps, laughs, and cries, so do the viewers at home. Watching along with Twitter, you can have the best of both worlds: get insider access from stars who know the Oscars best, and join fellow film fans in a global viewing party.

From the red carpet to the Dolby Theatre to their own couches at home, this year’s live-tweeting cast includes:

    Attendees:
Helen Hunt, @HelenHunt (Nominee, Actress in a Supporting Role)
Kristen Chenoweth, @KChenoweth (Oscars pre-show co-host; performing at the Oscars)
Nina Garcia, @NinaGarcia (Marie Claire creative director, "Project Runway" judge)
Louise Roe, @louiseroe (Host, "Fashion Star" / NBC)
Krista Smith, @KristaSmith (Vanity Fair west coast editor)

    Couch commentators:
Katie Couric, @katiecouric (Talk show host, “The Katie Show”)
Carl Reiner, @carlreiner (Actor, writer, producer, author... legend)
Dick Van Dyke, @iammrvandy (Actor, writer, producer, director, acapella aficionado... legend)
    Evangeline Lily, @evangelinelily (Actress)
Katie Q Lowes, @KatieQLowes (Actress, “Scandal” / ABC)
Arlene Silver, @speakyteeth (Make-up artist, Mrs. Dick Van Dyke)
Mary Alice Haney, @maryalicehaney (Fashion stylist + editor, Host of “Closet Confidential” / Style)
    Matt Roller, @rolldiggity (Writer, comedian)
Erik Griffin, @erikgriffin (Actor, “Workaholics” / Comedy Central)
Heidi Klum, @heidiklum (Model, "Project Runway" host, designer)

For truly insider access, you’ll also want to keep an eye on a few other accounts. Host Seth MacFarlane (@SethMacFarlane) and Producer Neil Meron (@NeilMeron) are sharing behind-the-scenes peeks at everything that goes into Hollywood’s biggest night. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (of “I’d like to thank The Academy” fame), the organizer of the Oscars, will be sharing awards news, presenter lineups, backstage photos, and all sorts of insider details via @TheAcademy.

To follow all these amazing accounts in one place, visit this page. To keep up with the whole conversation from stars and fans alike, use & follow #Oscars, or check out @ABCNetwork’s Twitter buzz page. With the Oscars just two days away, red carpets are being rolled out, gowns are being fitted, and speeches are being rehearsed.

Here are some sneak previews and perspectives from nominees (or stars of nominated films), in case you need any more reasons to get excited for the #Oscars:

  • Premio Lo Nuestro take center stage

    Thursday, February 21, 2013

Awards season is in full swing, and tonight’s big show is all about celebrating the best in Latin music. The 25th annual Premio Lo Nuestro music awards show will air on Univision at 8pm ET/ PT; the red-carpet kickoff, La Noche De Estrellas, starts one hour earlier at 7pm ET/ PT. Tune in to Twitter for both, and you won’t miss a beat.

Social media host @AmeliaVega will be with you on Twitter, reporting live to connect you with your favorite celebrities and backstage moments throughout the show.

Here are the best hashtags for joining the Twitter conversations:

    #Moda25
Starting on the red carpet, fans can pick their top celebrity fashion moments and interact with their favorite stars via Tweets. By tweeting a star’s name or Twitter handle with the hashtag #Moda25 you can send your vote. Then tune in to see which look will steal the show.

    #PLN25
As your favorite stars work the red carpet, Tweet your comments and questions with #PLN25. Your Tweet could make it to the big screen to be broadcast to the world during the show.

    #JenniAplauso
On a more somber note, Premio Lo Nuestro will honor the legacy of the late star Jenni Rivera. Using Twitter, fans can join a moment of applause in her memory. Via Thunderclap, you can participate in a moment of virtual applause for La Diva De La Banda and share your Tweets with fans around the world.

    Here’s a taste of tonight’s fun:
As rehearsals are underway and the nominees prepare to find out the results, stars and performers are already sharing their excitement for the show:

TV host and actress Chiquinquira Delgado (@Chiqui_delgado) is pumped for tonight’s festivities, sampling which dress she’ll wear on the red carpet.
Check out the pop duo Chino & Nacho (@ChinoyNacho) backstage rehearsing for the big night:
@PremioLoNuestro is already tweeting from behind-the-scenes:

Don’t miss a moment of the action backstage, and follow @PremioLoNuestro for all-star access when you tune in tonight.

  • Introducing DMARC for Twitter.com emails

We send out lots of emails every day to our users letting them know what’s happening on Twitter. But there’s no shortage of bad actors sending emails that appear to come from a Twitter.com address in order to trick you into giving away key details about your Twitter account, or other personal information, commonly called “phishing”.

Earlier this month, we began using a new technology called DMARC that makes it extremely unlikely that most of our users will see any email pretending to be from a Twitter.com address. DMARC is a relatively new security protocol created by a group of organizations to help reduce the potential for email-based abuse.

Without getting too technical, DMARC solves a couple of long-standing operational, deployment, and reporting issues related to email authentication protocols. It builds on established authentication protocols (DKIM and SPF) to give email providers a way to block email from forged domains popping up in inboxes. And that in turn lessens the risk users face of mistakenly giving away personal information. If you’re interested in a more technical explanation, you’ll find it here.

While this protocol is young, it has already gained significant traction in the email community with all four major email providers – AOL, Gmail, Hotmail/Outlook, and Yahoo! Mail – already on board, rejecting forged emails. We hope to see it gain more coverage for our users as even more email providers adopt it, and that it gives you more peace of mind when you get an email from us.

  • A friendly reminder about password security

    Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Over the past couple of days, there's been a fair amount of conversation about account security on Twitter. We thought we'd take advantage of this moment to remind you of best practices around passwords – both on Twitter and on the Internet generally.

    • Use a strong password. Your password should be at least 10 characters that include upper and lower case characters, numbers, and symbols. You should always use a unique password for each website you use; that way, if one account gets compromised, the rest are safe.
    • Watch out for suspicious links, and always make sure you’re on Twitter.com before you enter your login information. Be cautious when clicking on links in Direct Messages. Whenever you are prompted to enter your Twitter password, just take a quick look at the URL and make sure you're actually on Twitter.com. Phishing websites will often look just like Twitter's login page, but will actually be for destinations other than Twitter. If ever in doubt, just go directly to twitter.com in your browser.
    •  Don't give your username and password out to unknown third parties, especially those promising to get you followers or make you money. When you give your username and password to someone else, they get complete control of your account and can lock you out of your account or take actions that cause your account to be suspended. Be wary of any application that promises to make you money or get you followers. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
    • Make sure your computer and operating system is up to date with the most recent patches, upgrades, and anti-virus software. Keep your browser and operating system updated with the most current versions and patches; patches are often released to address particular security threats.

We offer more detailed advice in our Help Center.

  • 2013 State of the Union

    Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Each year the President’s State of the Union speech, and the opposition response that follows it, ignites a national conversation about a host of issues. Tonight’s #SOTU address and response drew more than 1.36 million Tweets.

If you watched the speech on TV, you could see how members of Congress and political dignitaries responded to the President’s remarks. On Twitter, the ebb and flow of Tweets per minute illustrates some reactions from the rest of us. The highest spikes in conversation occurred when President Obama discussed the following:

    - Middle class opportunities & minimum wage; “ladders of opportunity”: 24,000 TPM
    - Gun violence victims and need for legislation; “they deserve a vote”: 23,700 TPM
    - Early childhood education; “make sure none of our children start the race of life already behind...Let’s give our kids that chance”: 19,000 TPM

During the GOP response delivered by Florida Senator Marco Rubio (@marcorubio), the peak in Twitter conversation came following his pause for a sip of water.  Sen. Rubio poked a bit of fun at himself with a Tweet of his own:

Sen. Rubio’s press secretary also shared a Vine offering a peek at what goes into setting up a live national address:

And as the official speech and counterpoint conclude, the Twitter conversation continued:

Peanut butter + jelly, peas + carrots, Twitter + music — they’re all better together. The music world is huge on Twitter:

     ◦ 50% of active users follow at least one musician
     ◦ the top 4 most-followed people are musicians
     ◦ music is the second-most-discussed topic on Twitter in the U.S.

  • Now showing: Older Tweets in search results

    Thursday, February 07, 2013

Yesterday, we updated our Android, iOS and mobile web apps to make it easier for you to find relevant content when you’re on the go. We also started to roll out an additional update on our mobile apps as well as on twitter.com: you'll now be able to find older Tweets using search. To see for yourself, try searching for [Manchester United Southampton] or [#SpotTheShuttle].

Previously, Twitter search results displayed Tweets going back about a week. We’ve developed a way to include older Tweets, so you can see content that goes beyond the more recent Tweets.

As we roll this out over the coming days, the Tweets that you’ll see in search results represent a fairly small percentage of total Tweets ever sent. We look at a variety of types of engagement, like favorites, retweets and clicks, to determine which Tweets to show. We’ll be steadily increasing this percentage over time, and ultimately, aim to surface the best content for your query. For now, enjoy your trip down memory lane!

    • Discover: Now all the content in Discover — Tweets, Activity, Trends and suggestions of accounts to follow — appears in a single stream, on both iPhone and Android. You can also dive into Activity and Trends from new previews at the top of the Discover tab.
    • Search: Search results now surface the most relevant mix of Tweets, photos, and accounts, all in one stream (similar to the stream in Discover). We’ve also added a new search button to Twitter for iPhone, letting you search from anywhere within the app. (This button was already available in the Android and iPad apps.) Look for the magnifying glass icon next to the button you use to compose a Tweet.
    • Connect: To provide a simpler experience in the Connect tab, the default view is now Interactions, which shows you new followers, retweets and mentions. If you prefer to view only your mentions in Connect, you can adjust the default in settings – find the “Connect tab” option and select “Mentions only”.
    • Links: Click a URL in a Tweet to go directly to that website from any timeline and get to content highlighted on Twitter faster. (Previously, when you tapped any part of a Tweet, it would first expand and then a second click was required to get to the website.)

As always, you can learn more about what’s new in our mobile apps from the App Store or Google Play.

  • Welcoming Bluefin Labs to the Flock

    Tuesday, February 05, 2013

Today we’re happy to announce that we have acquired Bluefin Labs, a leading social TV analytics company that provides data products to brand advertisers, agencies, and TV networks. We believe that Bluefin’s data science capabilities and social TV expertise will help us create innovative new ad products and consumer experiences in the exciting intersection of Twitter and TV.

This acquisition reflects our commitment to the social TV market, and builds on our exclusive partnership with Nielsen announced in December to develop the Nielsen Twitter TV Rating, the centerpiece of social TV measurement based on Nielsen’s SocialGuide platform. We intend to honor existing Bluefin customer contracts, but we will not continue to sell Bluefin’s product suite beyond the existing contracts. We plan to collaborate closely with Nielsen and SocialGuide on product development and research to help brands, agencies, and networks fully understand the combined value of Twitter and TV.

As millions of people around the world experienced during Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast, Twitter is an amazing complement to live television viewing. We look forward to working with Bluefin and our partners in the television industry to make the experience of Twitter and television even better.

Here’s the Bluefin team’s post on today’s news.

  • The super Tweets of #SB47

    Sunday, February 03, 2013

The game is over, the confetti has descended, and #RavensNation is celebrating their big victory. During the Sunday matchup between the @ravens and @49ers, the roar of the crowd was comprised of 24.1 million Tweets about the game and halftime show (this leaves aside the ads, about which more below). By the beginning of the second half, the volume of Tweets had already surpassed last year’s Tweet total.

The moments generating the biggest peaks of Twitter conversation (measured in Tweets per minute, or TPM) during the game:
    - Power outage: 231,500 TPM
    - 108-yard kickoff return for Ravens TD by Jones: 185,000 TPM
    - Clock expires; Ravens win: 183,000 TPM
    - Jones catches 56 yard pass for Ravens TD (end of 2nd quarter): 168,000 TPM
    - Gore TD for 49ers: 131,000 TPM

Tonight’s most mentioned players were (in order): Ray Lewis (@Raylewis), Joe Flacco (@teamflacco), Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) and Jacoby Jones.

Whether they were inside the stadium or glued to screens elsewhere, athletes and commentators tweeted out their thoughts during the game’s big moments.

The other superstar on the field tonight was @Beyonce. Her halftime performance lit up Twitter (did it affect the Superdome power grid, we wonder?), generating 5.5 million Tweets. Fans’ favorites reflected by Tweet volume:
     - Conclusion of her show: 268,000 TPM
    - Destiny’s Child reunion on stage: 257,500 TPM
    - Singing ‘Single Ladies’: 252,500 TPM

A few Tweets that flew about @Beyonce's energetic performance:

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Super Bowl without conversation-starting ads — some planned, and others that emerged in real time. Of the national broadcast ads that aired during the game, approximately half had a hashtag included in them, up from one in five last year.

The biggest surprise of the game was the 33:55 power outage that halted the Superdome action. And during that hiatus, Twitter was most definitely on. Several parody accounts (e.g. @superbowllights) popped up to provide some comedic relief as anticipation built.

Additionally, the half-hour-plus downtime gave brands on Twitter a chance to showcase humor, creativity... and abs.
Illustrating just how fast advertisers moved in: it took just four minutes for the first Promoted Tweet to appear against searches for [power outage] on Twitter. We’ll have more stats about the ads that ran during #sb47, including the results of our #AdScrimmage, later this week on the Twitter Advertising Blog.

Meanwhile, over at the #PuppyBowl, where fans were heartily rooting heartily for Butterscotch or Copper, there were about 500,000 Tweets — including a perhaps unsurprising uptick during the Big Game’s power outage.

  • Keeping our users secure

    Friday, February 01, 2013

As you may have read, there’s been a recent uptick in large-scale security attacks aimed at U.S. technology and media companies. Within the last two weeks, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have chronicled breaches of their systems, and Apple and Mozilla have turned off Java by default in their browsers.

This week, we detected unusual access patterns that led to us identifying unauthorized access attempts to Twitter user data. We discovered one live attack and were able to shut it down in process moments later. However, our investigation has thus far indicated that the attackers may have had access to limited user information – usernames, email addresses, session tokens and encrypted/salted versions of passwords – for approximately 250,000 users.

As a precautionary security measure, we have reset passwords and revoked session tokens for these accounts. If your account was one of them, you will have recently received (or will shortly) an email from us at the address associated with your Twitter account notifying you that you will need to create a new password. Your old password will not work when you try to log in to Twitter.

Though only a very small percentage of our users were potentially affected by this attack, we encourage all users to take this opportunity to ensure that they are following good password hygiene, on Twitter and elsewhere on the Internet. Make sure you use a strong password – at least 10 (but more is better) characters and a mixture of upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols – that you are not using for any other accounts or sites. Using the same password for multiple online accounts significantly increases your odds of being compromised. If you are not using good password hygiene, take a moment now to change your Twitter passwords. For more information about making your Twitter and other Internet accounts more secure, read our Help Center documentation or the FTC’s guide on passwords.

We also echo the advisory from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and security experts to encourage users to disable Java on their computers in their browsers. For instructions on how to disable Java, read this recent Slate article.

This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident. The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked. For that reason we felt that it was important to publicize this attack while we still gather information, and we are helping government and federal law enforcement in their effort to find and prosecute these attackers to make the Internet safer for all users.

Updated 4:47pm: Corrected detail on disabling Java in penultimate paragraph.
