Now Brewing: Steamy Romance
February 4th, 2013Since the gastrointestinal after-effects of Superbowl Sunday are fresh for most of us, it seems like a good time to think about lighter, healthier foods and maybe eat a salad. Valentine’s Day is around the corner and there’s a good reason why wings or anything con queso is usually not on the menu. That’s because most foods considered “aphrodisiacs” stimulate more than your taste buds and feel indulgent without rendering you inert in your recliner.
The foods with the oldest and soundest reputation as aphrodisiacs tend to both please the senses and possess real nutritional benefits. They’ve likely gained their reputation by promoting health, and with excellent health comes good looks, vitality, fertility (you’ve been warned) and all the makings of a great date. Below are a few love drugs hidden in our coffees and teas:
Chili Peppers
Capsaicin is the compound in hot peppers responsible for the burning sensation we feel on our tongue and skin. While it doesn’t actually burn anything, it does get your blood pumping, elevating body temperature. Interestingly enough, that burning sensation also triggers the release of endorphins and can effectively relieve pain. While breaking out in a sweat over dinner might not be attractive, small doses produce a pleasurable heat and give the skin a nice glow.
What to try: Hearts on Fire Tea, Creole Julep Coffee
Ginger
There are so many reasons why ginger deserves a spot on this list. Spicy and sweet, it’s delicious in any part of the meal from cocktail to dessert, with the added medicinal benefit of keeping un-sexy indigestion at bay. Like garlic, minus the odor, ginger also thins blood, probably its most best-known aphrodisiac quality, allowing it to flow freely where needed.
What to try: Love Struck Rooibos, Cucumber Ginger Martini Green Tea
Cinnamon
Like chili peppers, cinnamon is considered a “warming spice,” increasing our body temperature by dilating blood vessels and stimulating circulation. Highly aromatic, you might not even need to consume cinnamon to reap the aphrodisiac benefits. According to a study conducted by the The Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, the smell of cinnamon rolls was determined to be the most arousing scent for men, as determined by blood flow to specifically male areas of the body.
What to try: Cookiedoodle Coffee, Spiced Chai, Orange and Spice Black Tea
Edible Flowers
Flowers are downright obscene if you think about it. The fancy reproductive parts of plants, flowers are designed to intoxicate the passing pollinator via color, fragrance, and sometimes sugary nectar. ?Aside from beauty and symbolism, flowers add delicate perfume, flavor, and even nutritional benefits to food and drink, including minerals and antioxidants.
What to try: A Tea By Any Other Name, Love Struck Rooibos, Lady Earl White Tea
Coffee
Coffee is not a secret ingredient here, but it is often over-looked as an aphrodisiac. As coffee-enthusiasts know, caffeine is a stimulant and a powerful social lubricant. Like alcohol, coffee can produce a dangerous feeling of well-being that can lead to chatty over-sharing and the embrace of strange dogs, among other mistakes. While caffeine might slightly (temporarily) impair judgement, it does not impair your speech or reflexes and the spiral downward is less likely to produce blackmail material. Coffee also pairs well with another beloved aphrodisiac, dark chocolate, or any decadent, date-worthy dessert.
