Evolutionary Programming
There are many possible interpretations of the title to this page. In this case, however, I am referring to the emerging fields of genetic algorithms and genetic programming.In 1981, at General Motors Institute (now Kettering University), I wrote an APL program to try and generate valid APL code to see what kind of 'algorithms' that the APL generator might 'discover'. The project was a decided failure, as I never was able to generate a 'valid' algorithm.
Little did I realize that in 1991 I would pick up a book on Genetic Algorithms and find people having a great deal of success with the concept I have so ineptly brushed against.
It is certain that evolutionary computing, which is still in its infancy, will dramatically change the face of computing over the next few decades. Because it is a passion of mine, I have dedicated a small portion of ICE Engineering's web site to related material.
