GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a
useful 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format created by
CompuServe in 1987. Since then it has become wide used for
its wide support and portability. GIF supports online
drawings, pictures with blocks of solid colors, and pictures
with sharp boundaries between colors. GIF is unsuitable for
photographs due to its 256 distinct colors from the over 16
million representable in 24-bit RGB limitation. However,
there is a hack that can overcome this limitation under
certain circumstances. On the process of compressing, there
is no information lost in GIF files.
EMF (Enhanced Metafile)
is a metafile format designed by Microsoft, and a successor
to the older WMF format. EMF is a newer 32-bit version with
additional commands. It is easy to read on MS Windows
computer while harder to read on other platforms. EMF files
are usually stored between 5 to 10 KB in size, and EMF
images do not support transparency. The EMZ format is a
compressed version of the EMF format. EMF+ is an extension
to EMF that allows GDI+ records to be stored. There are two
variations on the EMF+ format: EMF+ Only and EMF+ Dual
TIF/TIFF (Tag Image File Format) is
widely and common used lossless image format in all
platforms, such as Mac, Windows, Unix. With the ability of
storing arbitrary number of bits per pixel and having
variety of compression algorithms, TIFF is favored by most
people, especially by graphic designers. TIFF supports CMYK,
RGB, Lab, indexed color and grayscale with alpha avenue and
Bitmap images without alpha avenue. When approving or adding
new tags, it can extend TIFF format by using tags. That is,
the image information can be stored and arranged. To convert

format definition:
PNM means Portable Any Map file
format which is a connection of the PBM, PGM, and PPM
formats. It can produce multiple output formats including
PBM, PGM, and PPM, and see the differences between the
three. PNM, a simple format easily and quickly to read and
write, is principally used with Netpbm. |
