So, should Tony and Ken swop 職業s?

TO JUDGE from the 現在の apocalyptic mood in British politics, one might 結論する that Tony Blair should become the leader of the Tories, and - after he 味方するd with the 労働 反逆者／反逆するs in 議会 last week against war with Iraq - Ken Clarke should become leader of the 労働 Party.

This would neatly 解決する two 圧力（をかける）ing problems: that the 労働 Party is 近づく to 反乱（を起こす） at 存在 dragged off to war against its will, while the Tories, who 猛烈に want to go to war against 労働 but find they've been 供給（する）d with leaky boots and dodgy 弾薬／武器, now think that Mr Blair is a reincarnation of Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill and the Duke of Wellington rolled into one.

At the same time, there is a remarkable degree of overlap between Mr Clarke and the 政府. 労働 MPs may think that every Tory 耐えるs an ineradicable 示す of Cain, but a few moments' thought would surely 説得する them that this was a match made in bloke heaven.

In the past few days, a number of Tories have been 噴出するing about the leader of the 政府 they …に反対する.

You've got to 手渡す it to Tony, they say; given the terrible political 危険 he is taking, it takes guts to 持つ／拘留する 急速な／放蕩な to his position on Iraq.

This is an agonised moan from a party terrified that it may be in its death-throes from 終点 観念的な 混乱. Yet, extraordinarily, the 反対する of its adulation is himself said to be in 悲惨な political trouble.

If the more excitable 予測s are to be believed, this year may see both the 総理大臣 and the Leader of the 対立 felled by their own disgusted parties.

Politics is now bewilderingly upsidedown. 議会 spoke last week resoundingly in favour of Mr Blair's 政策 on Iraq - his 大多数 was 194 投票（する）s - but the MPs who supported him in the ロビー, and on whom he must now rely, were the 保守的なs.

The Tories' love 事件／事情／状勢 with Mr Blair, however, goes far deeper than the 問題／発行する of the war, and illustrates the 推論する／理由 why they are still hopelessly thrashing around with 無 信用性. For those 保守的なs who imagine that 労働 is led by 'Tory Blair' have deluded themselves.

They are 権利 about the 質s he is 陳列する，発揮するing. Of course, it takes courage to 直面する 負かす／撃墜する his party, much of the country, the 大司教 of Canterbury, the ローマ法王 and his precious friends in Europe.

He 陳列する，発揮するd the same courage when he took on his party over 条項 Four.

What he did then was to 主張する reality over a destructive fantasy.

And on Iraq, I think he is 類似して 絶対 訂正する to say that time has run out for Saddam and that he will have to be 武装解除するd by 軍隊 - although crucially, he has failed to make the 事例／患者 適切に and 納得させる the public that war may be necessary to defend the British 国家の 利益／興味.

This is because what 運動s him is itself a dangerous fantasy - the delusion that he can 解放する the world and eradicate evil by the 課税 of 推論する／理由. It is small wonder, therefore, that the public 恐れる they are 存在 led into some 肉親，親類d of quasi-imperialistic, missionary adventure. But the 星／主役にする-struck Tories overlook this.

From the start, they got Mr Blair wrong. They were mesmerised by him for two 推論する／理由s.

The man was a winning machine; and they thought he had parked his 観念的な 戦車／タンクs on the Tory lawns.

They never got the point.

What he had parked on the Tory 瀬戸際s was 単に a hologram of a 戦車／タンク column. His 行政 certainly spoke the language of the 権利, on 罪，犯罪, 亡命, public services or personal 責任／義務; but it 行為／法令／行動するd Left.

Speaking 権利 was 必須の to placate the desperate 願望（する） of 保守的な Middle Britain for order, 安全 and 司法（官）.

But in practice, this 政府 has gone in a やめる different direction: hitting the middle classes, destroying education, family and the British 憲法, introducing 集まり 移民／移住 and centralising the public services.

True, much of that is 負かす／撃墜する to the personal 協議事項 of Gordon Brown. But Mr Blair himself is not a 保守的な but a 過激な.

Like so much of his party, he wants to transform society and human nature itself, believing in supranational 会・原則s like the EU which in actual fact 提起する／ポーズをとる a mortal 脅し to 僕主主義 and true 自由主義の values.

But there is one Tory who 是認するs much of 労働's 協議事項. Just look at what Ken Clarke and the 労働 Party have in ありふれた.

Mr Clarke is a fanatical European integrationist.

When he was in 政府, he brought in managerialism, the doctrine that all the public services need is more efficient 行政 and a balance sheet mentality.

This asinine creed - which New 労働 has borrowed from the Tories - helped 減ずる the police service to the pitiful 条件 it is in today.

Just like the 労働 Party, Mr Clarke noisily supported the NHS while introducing a centralised 管理の system that dealt it a 近づく-mortal blow.

Far from 回復するing education to its true 目的, it was Mr Clarke who dropped history from the curriculum after age 14, thus helping to 促進する 集まり ignorance of the 必須のs of 市民権.

It was also Mr Clarke who, as （ドイツなどの）首相／（大学の）学長, cheerfully took an axe to the married couples' 税金 allowance ーするために help square his 会計の circle.

And now Mr Clarke has shown himself a true comrade on Iraq.

Like the 122 労働 反逆者／反逆するs, he 無視（する）s Saddam's 拒絶 (にもかかわらず yesterday's 11th-hour （人命などを）奪う，主張するs) to 従う with the UN's 必要物／必要条件 to 証明する he no longer has the 8,500 litres of anthrax or the 1.5 tonnes of deadly VX 神経 スパイ／執行官 以前 identified by the UN 視察官s, not to について言及する the 6,500 化学製品 爆弾s identifiedby Dr Hans Blix. Like them, he doesn't believe there has been any 構成要素 違反 of the UN 決意／決議 要求するing '十分な, active and 即座の 協調', 無視（する）ing the systematic 脅迫 of Iraqi scientists, the lies and the 執拗な obstruction of the 視察官s.

Like them, he （人命などを）奪う，主張するs that war would 刺激する テロ行為, ignoring the fact that the first 爆破 of the World 貿易（する） Centre in 1993, the attacks on 大使館s and 兵舎, the rise of Al Qaeda and the plotting of September 11 itself all occurred while America and the 残り／休憩（する） of the world was busy appeasing terror.

Yes indeed; with this ignorant, lazy and craven speech, Mr Clarke has shown he is definitely the man to lead the 労働 Party. 労働 MPs are donkeys who hate the fact they are led by a lion; so let them be led instead by a donkey.

As for the Tories, they are donkeys who 猛烈に yearn to be led by a lion. But the leader they have is the lion from The Wizard Of Oz, who has lost his courage and who is 脅すd by the 影をつくる／尾行する of Michael Portillo into 失敗s like the 最近の botched sackings of Central Office bureaucrats.

Yet this particular lion at bay also 要求するs his scarecrow party to be given a brain. Only if it 陳列する，発揮するs rather more 戦略の 知能, instead of sighing for Mr Blair or flirting with Mr Clarke, will the Tory Party ever find the end of the rainbow.
