So-ordinary Audley now a 星/主役にする only in Ex-factor

Last updated at 10:52 12 December 2005

Frank 過密な住居's heavyweight ボクシング 昇進/宣伝 was 空気/公表するd by ITV in the prime time slot すぐに に引き続いて Simon Cowell's glorified karaoke contest on Saturday night.

After the X-Factor (機の)カム the Ex-Factor.

Audley Harrison is going 支援する across the 大西洋 having dropped his world 選手権 trumpet into the Thames. 支援する to fighting lumberjacks and barmen in North America. 支援する to the 製図/抽選 board at an age when most pugilists are 長,率いるing for the knacker's yard. 支援する to a 未来 about as 確かな as that of an icecream 反対/詐欺 in a pre-heated oven.

It is not only his career which is going backwards at the age of 34 after his 敗北・負かす by Danny Williams - his ボクシング is, too.

He calls himself the A-軍隊 when he looks every インチ a spent 軍隊. The A must stand for Apprehensive - even one of his own corner men was overheard 告発する/非難するing him of 存在 petrified of Williams - not for 原子の.

Audley hears himself 存在 called Fraudley and Audrey, or at best Ordinary.

One of the hundreds of 支払う/賃金ing 顧客s streaming out of the hall before the end - その為に 行方不明の for their money the two-and-a-half-一連の会議、交渉/完成する finale which was the closest this 連邦/共和国 肩書を与える 一区切り/(ボクシングなどの)試合 (機の)カム to impersonating a 選手権 fight - called out: "They should give his purse to that 一連の会議、交渉/完成する-card girl. She's got bigger bazookas."

Like Gulliver on his travels, this 巨大(な) of a man finds himself 存在 laughed out of town by the little people. The bigger-長,率いるd they are the harder they 落ちる.

So it is 平易な this morning to make fun of the one-time Olympic 支持する/優勝者 who was sent 衝突,墜落ing to the canvas on his way to his first paid 敗北・負かす, one which (土地などの)細長い一片s him not 単に of a 肩書を与える but of his 信用性.

And yet, and yet...

There was poignancy 同様に as sarcasm in the midnight 空気/公表する of London's Docklands as Harrison (機の)カム out to 直面する his tormentors - sadness for a natural talent unfulfilled by a character unsuited to the rigours of his chosen profession, 悔いる for five years wasted on delusions of grandeur instead of self-改良 - years he can never 回復する - and pity for a proud man 存在 humiliated by nothing worse than basic human 証拠不十分.

The reality for Harrison is that he has neither the heart nor the mind to be a prizefighter. This is not a 不名誉, no 事柄 how cruelly he is ridiculed behind his 支援する by men who would not dare 直面する him in an alleyway. This is sad.

Heart in a boxer is not only getting up after 存在 knocked 負かす/撃墜する. Harrison 証明するd that ventricle was 機能(する)/行事ing after 存在 sent sprawling by a Williams 権利 in the 10th 一連の会議、交渉/完成する. Heart in a 支持する/優勝者 is a 願望(する) to 勝利,勝つ so powerful that it would over-ride a broken jaw, never mind the bruised knuckle Harrison 特記する/引用するd in 敗北・負かす.

High 知能, however uneducated, is one of the defining 質s of true greatness in sport. A reasonable mind can be a 障害(者) to marginally lesser men aspiring to glory.

Harrison is no genius but he is too 有望な for his own good as one of life's 競争相手s. Articulate, he 会談 a better fight than he 配達するs. Calculating, he 重さを計るs the 危険 of getting 不正に 傷つける now against the rewards already accrued. 商業の, he 行為/法令/行動するs as his own 経営者/支配人 and promoter instead of concentrating 排他的に on the hard 商売/仕事 inside the ropes.

儀礼 of his now 消滅した/死んだ BBC 取引,協定 and his 地位,任命する-Sydney 後援, he is a multimillionaire without 動機づけ.

That does not make him a bad man or a fool, 簡単に a 失望 to all of us who hoped to ride his chariot to the 星/主役にするs. But it is a 失望, most wistfully of all, to himself in all the obscure years to come.

That is, of course, unless he is so stung by all the mockery that he 開始する,打ち上げるs himself into a vengeful fury against time itself. さもなければ he is 運命/宿命d to be remembered as an amateur clever enough to box his way 一連の会議、交渉/完成する the weird Olympic 得点する/非難する/20ing system but a professional who did not really want to fight.

権利 now he is 需要・要求するing a rematch for whi ch even 過密な住居 would have trouble filling a phone booth. He is also hiding behind the 誤って導くing statistic of a 分裂(する) 決定/判定勝ち(する). Thankfully there were two 裁判官s in our exasperated company at ringside who saw it as I did, that Harrison's 権利 jab was a cat's paw not a point scorer.

さもなければ honest Danny Williams would have been robbed as 残酷に as the 犠牲者s of the muggers in the streets of his native Brixton.

Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh come in for plenty of stick when they boot a favourite off their show. But 非,不,無 of them gets it as wrong as 示す Green did in 投票(する)ing for Harrison.

Had the X-Factor 侵略(する)/超過(する) into the fight programme, it is not beyond the realms of imagination that にわか景気ing Brenda would be coming 支援する next Saturday after all, having knocked out Big Audley.

Gordon Taylor, 長,指導者 (n)役員/(a)執行力のある of the footballers' union, has been quick to 申し込む/申し出 support to Paul Gascoigne. Good for him, not least because Gazza is a good guy who needs help.

But why not so much as the hint of a PFA 許可/制裁 against Chelsea's Michael Essien, whose horrific 肺 might have broken the 脚 of Liverpool's Didi Hamann? Leaving any 罰 to UEFA is a 警官,(賞などを)獲得する-out.

Gazza's over-the-最高の,を越す drinking 害(を与える)s himself; Essien's over-thetop 取り組むs 脅す to destroy the careers of his fellow professionals.

It's not cricket...

A cricket match is supposed to be 11 men

against 11. So where is our 国家の satisfaction in (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域ing Pakistan in Saturday's one-day international when England field a team of 12?

Kevin Pietersen, having 動揺させるd up a half-century

with no obvious 調印する of an 恐らく 負傷させるd 支援する, then sat with his feet up in the pavilion as his 交替/補充 Liam Plunkett took three wickets. Plunkett was England's いわゆる

最高の-sub, an extra specialist 否定するd Pakistan

since they batted second when they had only a bowler in res erve.

The advantage which Plunkett gave England 減らすs our country's 楽しみ in this victory.

This is one new 支配する which should be scrapped 即時に.

Beyond that, however, it harks 支援する to this

Ashes summer and the way England kept taking

their bowlers off the field for 残り/休憩(する)s - 名目上 洗面所 breaks so long they might almost have read War and Peace while sitting on the loo - before they returned for a fresh 攻撃する at the Aussies.

This is a 規則 which still needs 修正するing.

Whenever a fielder 出発/死s for the pavilion with 傷害, real or imaginary, then the pavilion is where he should stay at least until the end of that day's play.

Let us once again remind Duncan Fletcher, England’s naturalised coach from Zimbabwe, that no 事柄 what the 血まみれの foreigners do, we don't cheat - not the 広大な/多数の/重要な spirit of the game,

never mind the small print of the 法律.

No 危機 for Sir Alex

The last time I looked I could have sworn

Manchester 部隊d were in the 最高の,を越す three of the 首相の職.

兵器庫 are five points behind them. Although Old Trafford has had its doors の近くにd to European

football for the 残り/休憩(する) of this season, the 栄冠を与える of the club game has twice been on 陳列する,発揮する in the トロフィー 閣僚 there.

Highbury has yet to celebrate going その上の than the 4半期/4分の1-決勝戦 of the 支持する/優勝者s League and, on 現在の form, looks ありそうもない to do so next spring.

Yet, if you believe all the 憶測, 部隊d

経営者/支配人 Sir Alex Ferguson is 長,率いるing for the 解雇(する) and Monsieur Arsene Wenger is 存在 長,率いる-追跡(する)d by Real Madrid.

The first is heresy, even though Fergie could do with 抽出するing himself from the 戦術の 迷宮/迷路 of coach Carlos Queiroz while 再建するing 部隊d with his third 世代 of prodigious young talent.

The second is hype, although Wenger will still be a 的 for any of the major clubs in England and abroad when he decid es to

leave 兵器庫

If 部隊d 勝利,勝つ their game in 手渡す on 首相の職 leaders Chelsea, against Wigan on Wednesday, they

will be の近くにing on Jose Mourinho's men even faster than Liverpool.

危機? Whose 危機?
